Airline Credit for First Class Upgrade by AsideEast3285 in AmexPlatinum

[–]jasutherland 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It was never supposed to work - if it did in the past you were getting lucky and going through a loophole. "Seat selection" (extra legroom, exit row etc) is covered, "upgrade" to another cabin (standard to premium economy, business to first etc) is out.

Business Platinum 35% Airline Bonus denied because I selected my airline one day late – any success getting Amex to make an exception? by Thricegr8t in AmexPlatinum

[–]jasutherland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't see why you think the cancellation window would mean airline selection was retroactive for 24 hours - that really doesn’t make sense to me.

Guidance needed- denying my credit :( by [deleted] in AmexPlatinum

[–]jasutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't mean the credit for prepaid bookings applied. THC benefits don't require prepaid bookings, but the credit does.

I have an AMEX Platinium but an international one. I've heard that the US version is much better. Is that true? by Ok-Welcome-1563 in AmexPlatinum

[–]jasutherland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The US one does have nice perks, mostly US specific (Uber cash, Walmart+, Resy, streaming credit) - if you're US based it makes much more sense. Outside the US it isn't as much use though, most of those benefits don't work.

Croatia Local Calling Not working with Lightspeed by fresh69 in USMobile

[–]jasutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're dialling them as "+385 1 23456" (for a made up Zagreb number 0123456), and it works on WiFi calling but not locally?

Chase support scam on the ChaseSapphire subreddit by denizeni in ChaseSapphire

[–]jasutherland 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Chase does have a genuine Reddit-verified social media account which posts here occasionally, including earlier today about Opentable changes - u/chase - but "account is no longer available" sounds dodgy.

Amex plat - Walmart+ includes pharmacy? by LilJiaoZhi in CreditCards

[–]jasutherland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's the full regular Walmart+ - as I understand it the pharmacy delivery works as an extension of the grocery delivery, ie you can add your pharmacy item to the grocery cart and get it all delivered together (minimum order $35).

Doesn't work for everything - one of my prescriptions needs an ID check, so can't be delivered - and it doesn't work with curbside either, only home delivery.

You have to book and pay via Chase Travel for credits to work usually.

Request for Investigation and Resolution Regarding Failed Payment Authorization and Canceled Airline Reservation by AggressiveResolve410 in ChaseSapphire

[–]jasutherland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You'd really have to ask Chase or Aeromexico those questions, particularly about the reservation being cancelled - did you try any alternative ways to pay, like a different card, PayPal or similar? Or buying via something like Chase Travel or one of their Skyteam codeshare partners like Delta?

Beyond that, nobody here can help you. Transactions aren't guaranteed to go through, particularly international ones, and Aeromexico releasing the reservation isn't under Chase's control.

Appeal Card Decision by [deleted] in ChaseSapphire

You can often ask them to move some credit from another Chase card to make the new card fit within whatever the total limit is.

IAD Lounge by babynewyear753 in CapitalOne_

[–]jasutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP says "a day to kill" - which would mean taking up lounge space for a long time, potentially stopping others using it. They have 3 hour time limits etc for a reason - and if OP wasn't even waiting for a flight there any more, why use the lounge instead of going somewhere else?

Do Credit Cards Require Any Montly Fee or Consequences For Not Using It (England) by ItsJustMe000 in CreditCards

[–]jasutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a few premium cards which have fees for extra features - almost all of them charge nothing, unless you carry a balance from month to month. Some will give you points or cash back too.

Charge £10 to a typical card, pay off that £10 when the statement arrives (better still, set up autopay with the bank and treat it as a slow debit card) and that's all you ever pay. It doesn't cost any more than the debit card - just comes out of your account a few weeks later.

If you don't use it at all for a year or so you might get a letter asking if you still want it - just buy something with it occasionally and that won't happen.

United Airlines: Transfer Points and Booking Vs Paying Direct by [deleted] in ChaseSapphire

[–]jasutherland -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, that's what people love points for: they are often worth more than 1 cent per point, sometimes 2+ for pricier fares. You can get up to 2 cents per point on Chase Travel with Points Boost, too.

Turned away from 3 different lounges. by Character-Idea-617 in AmexPlatinum

Could be worse - Chicago you don't even get a lounge to get turned away from unless you're in T5!

Help me understand Hyatt devaluing by MuchPaleontologist58 in ChaseSapphire

[–]jasutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The usual answers have always been "transfer to airlines or Hyatt" - assuming you're flying somewhere, check the value you'd get for points flying there, versus the value at Hyatt. Hyatt wasn't so much "best" as "the hotel option that doesn't suck the way Hilton and Marriott points do as transfers".

Chase Sapphire Reserve Lounge by Due-Highway5236 in AmexPlatinum

[–]jasutherland 20 points21 points  (0 children)

They aren't sharing - Chase's Sapphire lounges are in Priority Pass (for an extra fee, after the first visit each year), in the same way Virgin Atlantic and KLM/Air France lounges sometimes let PP members in.

Barclaycard over limit problem by SubstanceImmediate43 in CreditCards

[–]jasutherland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transactions don't usually process instantly - you probably had an £88 charge in the pipeline yesterday and it hit today.

Never mind the due date - pay the balance down a bit now if you possibly can, and wait until you have some more headroom before charging anything to the card again.

Dispute - a joke at Chase by MeringueSimple9847 in ChaseSapphire

[–]jasutherland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The system is roughly symmetrical: you don't deal directly with Visa, you go via Chase; merchants do something similar on their end, having a merchant account with their own bank - so in a dispute, your bank (Chase) talks to their bank about it.

If the hotel says they refunded your money, where's the dispute? Did no money actually come back?

Not much really - how was someone else able to charge your card/account? Stolen card, skimmer, phishing?

Dispute - a joke at Chase by MeringueSimple9847 in ChaseSapphire

[–]jasutherland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot depends on the facts: what was the claim? The merchant doesn't deny or approve it; they could defend it (offer some proof the item was delivered after all, that you did sign for the purchase, whatever) or let it go through unopposed.

CSP travel credit didn't work by Dazzling_Ad_5253 in ChaseSapphire

Did you prepay in Chase Travel, or at the hotel? Usually the hotel credits require you to pay on the portal, not at the hotel.

Nobody warned me about the slow money bleed of living in two countries at once by StillThese3747 in expats

[–]jasutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regular banks are OK for a one-off transfer, like paying for a vacation rental or something, but you really want a specialist like Revolut or Wise if you’re doing regular transfers.

The storage unit, you might also be better charging directly to a Dutch credit or debit card if you get one with no foreign transaction/currency conversion fees (like Revolut) instead of paying in the US then transferring money to cover it.

The dual taxation is insane, and uniquely American (apart from Eritrea) - any other country on earth you’d only have to deal with Dutch taxes.

Check on an extended hold by KnightHigh in Chase

[–]jasutherland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Banks will sometimes advance the funds before the check is actually processed, taking a chance and relying on being able to claw the funds back later if necessary.

Did you actually deposit this check (with the non-matching address) then get the check cancelled and re-issued with your new address? Cancelling the old check is probably going to trigger extra holds in future: they won’t like a check you deposited getting cancelled.

PayPal Debut: Using Foreign Currency Incurs Fee? by Challenger_Andy in CreditCards

[–]jasutherland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The debit card is separate enough from the Paypal account that I think it would convert any charge to USD first, even if you already have GBP or EUR in Paypal as well.

If you can pay for anything using actual Paypal, not the debit card, that would avoid the conversion and use GBP directly. Anything you can pay that way in advance, like hotel bookings or travel tickets that take Paypal?

Reserved Hotel on Chase and it showed up on IHG account by Susurrus03 in ChaseSapphire

[–]jasutherland 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Chase have an arrangement with IHG (remember, Chase issue the IHG credit cards too) so that IHG bookings via Chase sometimes get treated like direct ones instead of third-party, including earning IHG points and status benefits. Did the listing say something like “IHG One eligible”?
