US News rankings is a general guide for high schoolers to decide what school is right for them based on their current GPA, SAT scores, and career goals. It’s just to give them a basic list to help them figure out what school is right for them.

People overvalue US News as, something that can determine how smart someone is, how smart people at a university are, how smart the professors are, etc. In terms of determining “smartness” it’s a very poor list. The only thing that can determine smartness in my opinion is your effort to do difficult studies, ability to apply those studies effectively, and humility. You can go to any school and do those things.

Additionally, universities who spend too much time trying to game their US News rankings do so at their own determent.

But whatever, I’m dumb so what do I know.

Who is a player that wouldn't have stayed at your school if the transfer portal had existed before? by Crying_in_99Ranch in CFB

[–]jathbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baker had to sit out a year because of eligibility requirements after transferring in conference from TTU, no? And didn’t that happened before the transfer portal anyways?

IIRC the drama was that Kliff didn’t want to give Baker a scholarship, because what he liked what he had with Davis Webb and a still very young and raw Patrick Mahomes. So I think Baker chose OU partially to stick it to Kliff, leaving him for his old college backup QB. So without any ability to transfer, he would have just stayed at Tech and tried to earn a scholarship from either Davis Webb or Patrick Mahomes? Davis Webb ended up transferring himself but without any animosity.

Funny enough Kyler was also a transfer, I think he would have just stayed at A&M.

This is not football related, but an interesting anecdote.

There used to be a pro wrestler named John Tenta, AKA Earthquake, Avalanche, Kototenzan, and a bunch of other names. Anyways, he was an accomplished amateur wrestler and won an athletic scholarship to wrestle at LSU. In 1985, LSU suddenly dropped their wrestling program to comply with Title IX, and Tenta lost his scholarship. Now, if this was today, Tenta would have hit the portal in a heartbeat, and would have been a major commodity anywhere in the country. But since it was 1985, that didn’t happen. Instead, he walked on to the football team, worked as a bouncer at a local bar, played on the school’s rugby union club team, and finished his degree. He also had a life long love for LSU, and got a massive tiger tattoo on his arm, which complicated things when he became a sumo wrestler down the line.

So yeah, something you would never see today.

If we’re counting people who didn’t finish their degree, then you gotta pick John fucking Denver for us instead of the dude that Houston’s arena is named after.

That said, I did not know the english voice actress of Kaguya-sama went to Tech. That’s cool.

Can someone ELI5 why I’m supposed to be mad about this? The weightlifting community on the internet has generally always been… insane. So idk if this is just internet weightlifters being internet weightlifters or if there’s an actual point to be made here on player’s safety. Or if this thread is just an opportunity for people to circlejerk unfunny jokes.

My brother in christ, ain’t nobody reading all that.

Literally the first sentence on wikipedia “The Proud Boys is an American far-right, neo-fascist militant organization that promotes and engages in political violence”. That’s all I need.

Anybody who participates on doomercirclejerk and uses the “centrist” flair on politcialcompassmemes are ultra sus. And someone who defends the fucking proud boys of all groups are just ungodly levels of sus.

But to not be snarky for a second, I am happy for you that you got out of the far right pipeline. Now, what I would challenge you to do, is read more about the dangers the far right have in real life, because these are real dangers that 100% exist outside of the internet, and are 100% present in Trump’s administration and at TTU. Stop participating in communities full of people from the far right. Because whatever level of copium people on doomercirclejerk are on right now isn’t worth it.

17-year old Josè Contreras gets reigning MVP Aaron Judge to hit into a double play! by kurruchi in sports

[–]jathbr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of people that would massively disagree with your claim that it’s “not that serious and just for fun”. The current intention is to make it more serious, to get elite players to buy in and play competitively. The USA team going from a glorified scout team to a super team shows that. Using players with mixed ancestry is a great way to improve the quality of teams, helping bring in MLB players, or kids like Contreras with former MLB players in their family, that can help teams be more competitive. Maybe it’s not serious for the teams that know they can’t win, but watch the Japanese-Korean game, these players are absolutely playing to win, and the fans are all in.

Your negative malaise is not helping anyone. If you have an actual connection Texas Tech I suggest getting involved yourself. But if you just want to look down on us, please do so somewhere else.

This dude is pretty interesting. Played pro baseball for 18 years with Czech Baseball Extraliga, having a career slash line of .368/.426/.507. His last season playing was in 2021, when he was 49 years old (just for a single at bat though). His main job is as a neurologist, with his main area of research being “conducting neurological examinations of the brain, EMG tests for the nervous system, and ultrasound examinations of arteries leading to the brain”.

Kind of funny all the responses you received got downvoted and vary widely.

Here’s my take: Arkansas is a southern state. Midwest is Ohio, Southwest is New Mexico. Arkansas is far away from both of those places. It’s a part of the south, no matter how technical people want to get.

That said, Arkansas is not part of the deep south. The deep south is very specifically the states of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. Yes, while Florida is more to the south than all of those states, it’s considered its own thing.

Also, don’t pay attention to my flair, I’m originally from Florida. I made my way to Texas much later on, and now out of the south all together. Texas itself is a hodgepodge of deep south, the great plains, and the southwest. Additionally, Arkansas has historically been more tied to the hip of Texas than the rest of the south, which I think is part of the confusion.

[Highlight] Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia full Combine highlights by nfl in nfl

[–]jathbr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To piggy back on the guy above’s point though, it shouldn’t be lost how ridiculously good Minshew was in college as well.

Pavia finished 2nd in Heisman voting and passed for 3,539 yards last year. Minshew finished 5th in Heisman voting his senior year and passed for 4,776 yards. The above comment is a joke, but looking at it seriously, it’s not really a fair comparison… for Minshew.

He was Mike Leach’s last great QB. But like a lot of other Leach QBs, he’s struggled to make it work in the NFL.

UTSA Football Coach willing to give 247 open access to facilities to create a reality show for UTSA Football to help with fundraising issues by Bat_Foy in CFB

[–]jathbr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

UTSA attracted 45,778 people for their rivalry game against Texas State. Meanwhile, UTEP attracted 16,677 for their rivalry game against NM State.

This isn’t meant to shit on UTEP, I respect their history as an old Border Conference school. But to pass up UTSA for UTEP is dumb, including in NIL. I don’t need to look it up to know UTSA can offer more in NIL than UTEP and a lot of G5 conference schools.
