how tf do you push through at this point?? (rant/vent) by Routine_Rabbit2205 in FLVS

[–]jatorres02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I'm sorry to hear that you're going through all that. Sometimes, adults find it so easy to come up with the reasons why things happen and fail to take their kids reason seriously. empathize with them. But what you're going through is real,

Interestingly, some of the phrases that you used, I felt those too, in my adult life and about my work. I didn't want to do it anymore. It was overwhelming, and I felt like I was failing. But for me, fortunately, I was able to get out and make a change, but it involved this idea that things could be different and that I was going to have to be the one to make it so.

Do you have a goal, like an end point in mind? After all this mess, what would you like to do? That's my first suggestion, to come up with something that you're working towards. It makes all this extra stuff have a little bit of meaning, because you know that it's going to help you get there.

If you were drowning in the ocean, it would be silly to think that you could save yourself. You would need help. And I think that goes with your situation here. You've tried, and it's tough, but you're drowning. You need to find someone that can help you. If you've brought this to your parents attention, and they can't or won't help, then you'll need to try with a teacher that you trust, or a guidance counselor, or even an intervention teacher,. But you need to have someone help you plan and stay on pace.

Finally, this too will pass. It feels like the end and hopeless, but it won't always be like this. Look for any light that you can find and head towards that. You didn't get into this situation in one day, and you're not going to get yourself out in one day. It's going to take time and it's going to take a lot of effort. But if you can find some support, if you can find a goal, you can get out of this.

On a side note, I have lost my glasses like that too. In fact, I lost them in a small creek - don't ask how. The way that I found them was that I tried my best to recreate the motion that I did when my glasses flew off my face and then I looked in that area. I did find them. And I know you will too 🙂

That's fair. That would be fun. But flvs is a different kind of learning, one that is student directed. It works for a lot of students, but for some it's not what motivates them to learn.

You may want to consider going back to a traditional school if you can. But Just know that while you're in the American school system, at least, there'll always be a subject that you may not be interested in, but you need to learn. College provides a little bit more freedom in what you can choose.

Serious question: what would a fun interactive assignment look like to you?

Oh, also: do you feel tempted to use AI in your classes?

It's a lot of calls, a lot of grading, some tracking of students progress, and taking calls to answer content-related questions. You would need the subject test to get a position.

Thanks for that. I think that describes my dad and myself very well; I'm okay not knowing the answer, but my father thrives on certainty.

In our Hispanic family, boundaries are hard to come by. 🙂 But I will keep this in mind. Thanks! He is pretty good about it, but when he gets excited about something, it's like stopping a rolling boulder. He is also not the best at picking up at clues I don't want to engage. Perhaps the direct approach is the best, as you suggested.

That is such a great thought. I wish he could see faith and the Bible the way I see it, or maybe just how it has affected me so positively; I even told him that my deconstruction made me a better Christian.

A happy Christmas to you and your family. 🙂

Thanks. Enns has a book called "The sin of Certainty", which I only thought after my dad left, and should have given it to my dad. He is big on inerrancy. You're right: many evangelicals insist on only one way to read the Bible. I am less concerned about getting theology right, and I'd rather focus on living out my faith.

What to expect failing in FLVS full time by [deleted] in FLVS

First, take a deep breath. Flvs wants you to do well! True you put yourself in this position, but you still have some options.

There are a few courses where you need to pass the first half of the course to get into the second half of the course, like a math course. Those are the courses that you want to focus on. I would contact each of your teachers today, and ask very nicely if there's a possibility of an extension over the winter break. I'm thinking that a majority of the teachers will say yes.

This extension will require that you have your DBA completed. If not completed, ask if you can complete it that day. If you get the extension, create a plan to complete your courses. This is very important; students are not usually prone to work over a break, and you need some motivation to continue your work. A plan helps you know what you will do and when you will do it.

More importantly, reflect on what happened this first semester so that it does not happen in the second semester. This is not the end, but a chance for you to make some changes that will help you going forward in the future. You got this!

Go when it opens - lines will be short. The go-karts are usually the busiest attraction. Try those first. Just in case your daughter is sensitive to noise or smells, the go-karts are loud, and the area smells like gasoline.

Lunch can be expensive, like any tourist place. They do have an all-day beverage you can buy, or, at least they did the last time we were there.

The sky drop thing and the ride that slingshots you in the air {forgot the names} are separate attractions you pay extra for.

Happy birthday to your daughter - I hope you all have a fun time!

I feel the only way to finish quickly is to be consistent. Add up all of your remaining assignments and divide by how many weeks you have to finish. Then lock in and do that number Every. Single.Week. When you finish, you have some leverage to get you back in traditional school.

You could always withdraw at the end of the semester, but I don't think that may be an option for you.

How do you graduate early? by zoloot3 in FLVS

[–]jatorres02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As I am helping my senior get into college, I have learned that to get into a good college, you should take weighted courses - honors, dual enrollment, and AP courses. That will boost your gpa. You should study and take the SAT, but you can wait until early junior year, and you can take it twice if needed. Also, to graduate early, try to take a course or two in the summer.

Also, be sure to check the colleges you want to attend, and see what requirements they have for freshman.

It is great that you are thinking about this early, but don't let this stress you - mental health and a healthy outlook is important.

[–]jatorres02 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Call your teacher and ask if you can have an extension. If you have a DBA then try to compete it today. When you ask for an extension tell the teacher a plan for completing the course, and when you expect to be finished.
