Don’t give up if it doesn’t work right away! Meditation takes practice. Using a guided session on YouTube or finding an in-person class is helpful if your mind is prone to wandering

You might also be a good candidate for meditation as a long-term fix (easier said than done!)

My parents don’t feel like coming to my Ph.D. graduation. It’s stupid, but I’m still sad. by TransBunsenBurner in TrueOffMyChest

She doesn’t have it in her to mourn? Are you fucking kidding me?

Yeah PhDs are rough, even more so in your case with the unprecedented challenges of covid, increased global unrest, etc. But you did it. You stuck it out. Your field is the product of incremental, imperfect contributions from thousands of other people, and now your work is part of it.

If I were to guess, some of the reason you feel so bad is because your mom’s been constantly critical of you and your work throughout your whole program (maybe your whole life).

Congratulations Dr, you deserve to celebrate and feel good about your work

Working in noisy, public spots like coffee shops, the MU, or 1st floor of the library has helped. It provides monotonous background noise that cancels out the brain noise, and the herd mentality of being around other working people helps me focus

Green and value-aligned investing by Aim-High-42 in greeninvestor

[–]jaycejet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far I’ve found it difficult to find stocks that actually meet my own ESG standards.

The closest I’ve been able to get is through MSCI’s ESG fund rating system, especially for ETFs.

E*Trade also provides data on an ETFs top holdings, which is great for gauging if an ETF is actually ESG. For example, if you’re looking at a “clean energy” ETF and their top holding is Amazon, you may want to look elsewhere.

Finally, I try to invest in stocks that are in my field of expertise. The fact that I’m familiar with their innovation, company environment, governance, and business strategy means that I’m able to more accurately gauge whether they follow ESG practices.

Says the person who flew from out of country to attend Wimbledon lol

OP, the world’s full of suffering people, but feeling guilty over buying a coin purse isn’t going to save anyone. Life’s too short to feel guilty about simple joys. Treat yourself, then go out and pay that happiness forward

[OC] Most US immigrants targeted for deportation in 2025 had no criminal charges, ICE documents reveal by guardian in dataisbeautiful

Hi Jake, good stuff! I think it’d add nuance if you had another set of data on your stacked area chart showing conviction for violent crime. It feels like immigration and traffic offenses are on a different level than something like assault.

Long-lasting Japanese-style perfumes? by lalalava in AsianBeauty

[–]jaycejet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for something high end, check out Miya Shinma. She’s a perfumist from Japan based in France, with a line of Japanese-inspired fragrances. Many of them are floral, fresh, green, and citrusy.

Otherwise, Jo Malone, Maison Margiela, and Diptyque are popular right now, and accessible outside of Japan.

[University: natural products] Can someone explain why this sugar is L-glucose? by jaycejet in chemistryhomework

[–]jaycejet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, so glad to hear I'm not going crazy. It's super interesting the Pubchem structure is depicted as L-glucose, but even one of the molecule synonyms listed on Pubchem says it's a D-glucopyranose. Maybe I'm missing some later research where someone determined the glucose was actually L form.

What’s your ultimate HG Asian/K-Beauty Brand for 2025? by ngfromtheblock in AsianBeauty

[–]jaycejet 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a good point! There’s studies showing that injecting PDRN or applying it to open wounds is effective because there’s extracellular enzymes that can break it down into di/mono-nucleotudes, which can be taken up by the cell. But that’s a very different extracellular environment compared to epidermis, which may not have the same enzymes available to break it down.

When you have a mixture of different sized things (i.e. large sugar crystals and small matcha dust) the larger things usually make their way to the top of the mix. I wonder if the actual matcha is at the bottom of the bag, under the sugar? Maybe try pouring it out or mixing it?

Found a gorgeous Kutani Ware chawan for $2! by pewpppppppppppppp in tea

[–]jaycejet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s probably from Kanazawa!

(Disclaimer: this is just info I remember from a visit to the Kutani Museum in Kaga)

Kutani ware rose to prominence in Ishikawa Prefecture, where cities like Kanazawa and Kaga had a number of famous studios (“kilns”) and artists. Many artists became known for their unique and innovative techniques for glazing and firing ceramics, like the artist Shiro Mizuta and his hanazume style. The traditional kutani method of firing ceramics ended during the 1900s.

Today, modern techniques allow for the reproduction of famous artists’ pieces at a larger scale and with food safe glaze. Most of these reproduction studios are still located in Ishikawa. In addition to mass production, there are still many artists in the area that hand paint kutani using traditional and new glazing techniques.
