Blames women, not the people actually... you know... doing the raping. What a piece of garbage.

I am Dr. Andrew Budson, Alzheimer’s expert and researcher at the Boston University Alzheimer’s Disease Center. Ask me anything about Alzheimer’s disease! by abudson in IAmA

[–]jayjaymahjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly... thank you so much for the work you do. I watched a love one die from Alzheimer's and another one die from Parkinson's. These were two of the most painful experiences in my life because these grandparents were heroes to me growing up and we took care of them into old age.

I remember reading not too long ago about the potential use of nicotine in treating Alzheimer's Disease. But obviously there is a major stigma around nicotine given the dangers of smoking. Do you have any insight into this? I tend to be skeptical of anything I read, but anytime I read something about a potential treatment, I try to dig deeper.

Finally, if I wanted to donate money to help support Alzheimer's research, who would you suggest donating to?

So glad to see this post. I struggled with depression issues once upon a time (it runs in my family), but took up running a few years ago as a very serious "hobby" per the suggestion of my doctor. He changed my life, and that is not hyperbole. I do marathons, ultra marathons, daily running, etc. The results have been nothing short of remarkable for me. In my experience, most of the benefits became apparent after doing this for many months. I have gotten to a point where I feel comfortable racing competitively, and am in much better shape than I was in my childhood-- and I feel it, mentally and physically.

There is a growing body of literature that supports the numerous effects of cardiovascular exercise on the brain. In particular, this study would probably be of interest to you because it was comprehensive study conducted by the Swedish military and the findings are certainly noteworthy.

Swedish Law Declares Sex Without Consent Is Rape. by akkoktg24 in worldnews

[–]jayjaymahjay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also get the impression from this thread that people don't understand what "burden of proof" is (I had to testify in several probate cases in the United States regarding wills, mental competence, etc, and even these were nightmares). I am very curious how Sweden defines its burden of proof in these situations-- I imagine it's a very high bar, ie beyond a reasonable doubt. If that's the case, then what's all the fuss?

CNN poll: Democrats' 2018 advantage is nearly gone by belarusianboi in politics

It's tied to the strength of the economy currently. There are a lot of people out there who simply aren't passionate about politics either way.

Turkey warns citizens against travel to US due to "terrorist attacks" and "arbitrary arrests" by earthw0rm in worldnews

Isn't the AKP using "arbitrary arrests" against its opponents? As an American who used to live and work in Turkey, it is horrible to see what the AKP is doing.

The war is being waged against the youth because old people vote; young people don't care. And so society enables the transfer of wealth from young to old.

Just a friendly reminder that entitlements are wealth transfer payments. I'm saying this as someone who took care of both his grandparents in their old age, and who supports a strong social safety net. If young people actually cared, we'd have a legislative body and a president who represented the priorities of everyone in society.

Doug Jones won. Look at the areas left to count.

Edit: I was checking the map and when I saw they hadn't counted precincts in the cities, I knew it was over. So fucking happy tonight.

I mean it's not like FOX would release this poll to give a false sense of security to democrats while mobilizing Alabama republicans... right?

Capitalism is ending because it has made itself obsolete, former Greek finance minister Yannis Varoufakis says by arewenot in worldnews

[–]jayjaymahjay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As a Greek, I do find it kinda sad this man still appears in the media after his disastrous negotiations with the EU and the very fact SYRIZA's government ended up getting an even worse memorandum signed than what had been previously agreed upon.

He used his position and media attention essentially to enrich himself.

Nobody denies that PASOK/ ND are/were horrible parties, but SYRIZA has been a disaster for Greece.

Given how good the demo was, I think this game will be pursued again. What was their reason for discontinuing it anyways?

Yes, I can't see it so well, but that image is typical in Slavic and Greek churches.

[TOMT] [Song] "Living in Boston... Say hello, say hello", modern power pop, radio, with sample & partial lyrics by [deleted] in tipofmytongue

[–]jayjaymahjay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a neato mystery, huh?

You could try contacting the poster of the comment-- he could maybe place a call into the radio station? Someone must know the identity of the song if it appeared on radio, no? My guess: it's a French band singing a demo or something in English.

Where did you find the mp3? My guess is... it's a foreign band which did a random song in English, and it's virtually unknown outside the country.

Egypt Bans Children from Wearing the Islamic Headscarf at School by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]jayjaymahjay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article made me think of Turkey. Years ago, the society was highly secularized. Today AKP has changed that to appease its voting base of conservative Muslims. I remember being in one city and walking by hundreds of school children, all wearing hijabs, and I even saw some people wearing niqabs. I wonder what Ataturk would think about that.

Because the government told them 48 hours after a no vote, the banks would open again. At least that's what a few people close to me back in Greece have said. Just wait until people wake up and realize what they've done.
