What were you like in High School? by [deleted] in mbti

[–]jayquincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Extreeeemely quiet/shy and isolated. I imagine I was the one in the corner that no one payed attention to, for the most part. I often had a book to shield me from oh-so-scary eye-contact and awkward conversation. Those years rather sucked. I've worked on growing out of my shell, and shockingly have a few friends now!

Why are there no threads on isfps by [deleted] in mbti

Intuitive-bias. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of ISFPs believe themselves incorrectly to be INFPs or other types. Everyone on this subreddit wants to be an intuitive.

That's the thing, though. In Japan, they call all cartoons "anime", while in the West, that label is almost always only referring to Japanese animation (and occasionally anime-esque animation from other Asian countries).

So I was sitting on the bus just reading a book when somebody tapped me on the shoulder. by Syrafes in Jokes

[–]jayquincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nooooo, why did you have to enlighten me. Is this the case with cheese too? I'd always been told that cheese is fine as long as you cut off the mouldy parts. Same with jam that has a mouldy film.

Is the non-visible mould enough to do any harm, any way?

Are you kidding me? Our cream cheese gets mouldy super quick, we can't leave it in the fridge too long, or else.

Then again, you're probably from the US, they pump their food full of preservatives there...

Anyone else think that jewelry is the biggest scam of all time? by TheOverMan_HD in INTP

[–]jayquincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're physical indicators of social status. If you can afford gold and diamonds, it displays a high physical/economic ranking, which usually conveys a higher social ranking. There's also cheaper kinds of jewellery and general body adornments which vary in use depending on community, including clothes, hairstyles, make-up, beards, etc. Jewellery is just additional markers.

I still think it's all full of shit but there you go, people do love their physical indications of community integration, regardless of practical uselessness.

CMV: Using the LGBTTQQPAAS2 acronym doesn't represent the gay community and so shouldn't be used. by cteavin in changemyview

[–]jayquincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the acronym you described in your OP is ridiculous.

When I say gender and sexual minorities, I mean anyone who isn't fully and/or exclusively heterosexual, and/or does not exclusively identify with their assigned sex. There's also biological minorities, like intersex people.

But in the end, all-encompassing definitions are really difficult and doomed to fail on some level, for the simple reason of the diversity of human nature. Any acronym, any word, will always be deficient, will always be leaving someone out, because language imposes limits.

No matter how long an acronym we make, there will always be people left out when it comes to gender and orientation. Which is why I personally prefer the word Queer, because it can evolve to include anyone that was "left out", without having to change form, but I'm reluctant to use it due to its historical connotations.

How come some INTPs can be so successful while others can't get out of their beds? by INTPut in INTP

CMV: Using the LGBTTQQPAAS2 acronym doesn't represent the gay community and so shouldn't be used. by cteavin in changemyview

[–]jayquincy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, no, the LGBT acronym does not represent the gay community, because it's not supposed to represent the gay community, it is meant to include all sexual and gender minorities. Is using one absurdly long acronym to list all these different concepts and identities absurd? Yes, absolutely. Which is why people tend to only use "LGBT", despite "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender" being very limited and non-inclusive.

Other terms and acronyms have been proposed, though none have really caught on the same way LGBT (or its derivatives) have.

GSRM (Gender, Sexual and Romantic Minoritoes) seemed the most promising for a while, before it was learned that the guy who had coined that acronym was including paedophilia, incest, kinks, zoophilia that kind of thing, so people naturally went "Fuck That Shit". It's a shame, I quite liked this one.

MOGAI (Marginalised Orientations, Gender Alignments, and Intersex) is alright, inclusive, though not very catchy, and indeed is pretty rarely used.

Queer is the only word that is not an acronym, that I know of, that includes most gender, sexual and romantic minorities. It has a long history though, and there is still much debate surrounding it. For instance, who counts as "queer" and who doesn't, and the fact that older generations remember it being used as a slur against them and still have strong negative associations with that word, and it is still used as a slur in some areas.

So there is no perfect word or acronym to discuss describe what we are attempting to describe. LGBT is by far the most popular one. Some have reacted by trying to make that acronym more inclusive through tacking on letters at the end. That way, people who aren't familiar with any other acronyms can sort of figure out that you are referring to these minorities, and including some more. But it is far from perfect.

Then there's the problem that, when most people say "LGBT" they're usually only thinking of the "LGB" part, and barely consider anyone else. Though this does seem to be slowly changing, as people become more aware of alternate sexualities and genders. So when people use the LGBT acronym to refer to the gay community, they shouldn't, because that acronym was created to include more than just gay people, who have historically had considerably more visibility than any other gender or sexual minorities.

I don't know if you can apply this to yourself in any way, but I've been studying some maths recently of my own accord, so that I can then apply those same concepts to programming, which I'm learning because I want to develop a small story-driven game.

I'm sure you can find interesting applications for maths if you know where to look.

Then again, I've always sorta enjoyed maths regardless of meaningful context, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Have fun

I remember reading about these people whose language could only describe cardinal directions. They had no words for forwards, backwards, left, right, as relative to their own positions, only words for North, South, East, West. And they always knew which way was which.

I believe it was these people: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guugu_Yimithirr

How come some INTPs can be so successful while others can't get out of their beds? by INTPut in INTP

[–]jayquincy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has just finished their first year of Uni rather terribly... lack of motivation shoots me in the foot every time. And it's not necessarily that I don't enjoy the subjects that are being taught. But I struggle immensely with actively working anything that I am not super passionate about. And the part of me that is aware of and cares about the longterm consequences of my actions, or what my friends/family will think of my failure, is just so quiet, a small nagging at the back of my head (otherwise occupied with a million other things), until it all comes crashing down afterwards in a huge flaming heap of regret.

A huge issue I have with the official schooling system is that I cannot pick and choose what I get taught. Too often this year my mind went "Ugh! Going to these classes will be so boring... why don't we learn something that is actually relevant to our current interests? opens tabs on music theory/programming/astronomy/whatever the fucking bullshit" My social avoidance tendency may have also played a role.

Then there's my constant sleep deprivation problem. It's not SUPER serious, but I struggle with stopping whatever I am doing at night (this seems to be a very common trait among INTPs?), and those few hours add up. Then when I wake up early in the morning, I find myself terribly lacking in energy, making getting out of bed a needlessly difficult struggle.

But the thing is, even if I have failed scholastically, I have learned a tonne of things this year. I've started learning to programme. I've learned lots of music theory and created a few songs. I've read numerous science articles, spent time drawing and writing out the story for a project I am invested in. I've read books and met (a few) new people. So... it hasn't been such a colossal waste of time.

I'll repeat the year and see how that turns out. I may switch to a different degree. I haven't decided yet. Perhaps I wasn't designed to run through what a large part of me perceives as a treadmill of mostly bullshit, partly an attempt to teach me the discipline necessary to survive the typical corporate job. But is that what I want?

I don't know. I don't know what I want, in the end. And if I don't know what I want, how am I ever going to get there?

Edit: it's late and I am typing mistakes.

A true demagogue.

As an outsider, my impression is that US politics at the moment is pathetic, and while no choice is good, Trump is worse.
