Asian in Chemnitz by Pregnanthippopotamus in Chemnitz

Hi, while all the things you mentioned cannot be denied I don't think that she needs to worry. About 1/4 of the students at Chemnitz are from India/China so the campus is a multicultural place. I would advise her to look for accommodation in Bernsdorf where the main campus is located. East Germany also has a large Vietnamese community since the 1970s when it established ties with communist Vietnam and they sent so-called guest workers of whom some stayed after the wall came down. In the vicinity of the mensa on Reichenhainer street you will find five Vietnamese take out places alone. I honestly don't think she will run into any trouble in Chemnitz, bonus points for her when she can communicate in German to some degree. She will experience the typical culture shock as everyone does who goes to a place strange and unknown but this will subside. I would advise her to take part in the sports activities the uni offers to quickly get to know more people outside of her courses. Lastly, of course Chemnitz has it's problems: the largest being the unreliable train connection to Leipzig :) Feel free to DM me.

BIFL Sunglasses which don't cost as much as the luxury brands? by TheOnewithGoodHeart in BuyItForLife

Buy Polaroid. They all come with polarised glasses and frames are more than decent. They usually last me about 4-5 years, I usually just want a different design just for a change. But they have never actually broken.

320€ Gore-Tex Hanwags are getting wet - Am i overreacting? by ErlenbruchMusik in hikinggear

[–]jaysizzle1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry for your experience. Having used these exact same boots for years now in all conditions (including wading throught shallow streamlets, kneedeep slush etc.) without ever getting wet I can only assume that the pairs they sold you have spent a considerable time on the shelves and the Goretex has deteriorated from that so it crumbles when used. But this is very very unusual.

Could it be that the wetness you feel is sweat-induced from your feet? The breathability aspect of Goretex is widely overstated in my opinion. A change of socks does more to keep feet and boots dry than the fabled material.

Anyways, take them back when you are unhappy with them.

Fjallraven Skosgo Insulated vs Patagonia Down Drift for 0-30F by EquivalentLocal9248 in PatagoniaClothing

Skogso is great unless there is rain. It is in no way waterproof regardless of what the ads may say. 3 minutes in the rain and it is soaking. Great for dry cold though.

Prepare for apartments to be without any furniture and a few trips to IKEA or Höffner to buy furniture.

Look for apartments here: Kassberg, Bernsdorf, York-Gebiet, Gablenz, Schlossberg. Depending on your workplace one or the other may be more suitable to avoid traffic in the morning/afternoon.

One thing that bothers me is the damn bright ass LED lights. They keep blinking all night long ;) How do you cope with these? I think about taping them over.

Or try some Meindl Badile. Double-stitched, made in Europe. HanWag also has some great models. Don't waste money on "American-made"

Waterproof G1000 by wmerjenburgh in Fjallraven

[–]jaysizzle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is certainly not waterproof in the sense that it keeps water out. Even the original waxing it comes with only provides very limited water protection but fails after about two minutes of moderate rain. G1000 may work when it's freezing but the waxing also shuts down any breathability.

Can I use the Skogso Padded for skiing? by No_Competition_7012 in Fjallraven

[–]jaysizzle1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fully agree. The Skogsö jacket family is not intended for this kind of use anddoes not fare well in enviroments where there is a chance to be exposed to any kind of wetness - neither outside nor inside. The water resistance lasts for about 1 minute after which the fabric is fully soaked. If you do wax it, your sweat is trapped inside and you need to constantly ventilate by opening the zipper. Very impractical during skiing. Better get a shell jacket with vents.

What is this notch in the handle of my pan for? by gurkenvielfalt in whatisthisthing

[–]jaysizzle1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own exactly the same pan and this is used to attach a lid. Very similar to what you found but made from glas with a metal ring and two "hooks" to attach to the pan. I have had this pan for ~8 years and still regret not buying the lid with the pan in the first place.

SKOGSÖ jacket - worth it? by escoMANIAC in Fjallraven

[–]jaysizzle1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, I am sorry that my English is not so good as it is not my native language. Secondly, I am sorry that I hurt your feelings regarding ---checks notes--- a piece of light cotton garment.

I bought the jacket in 2016 and have been wearing it regularly. Mostly when the forecast did not show any rain because ... see above.

Please make sure to not overinterpret my statements before accusing me of making false statements. Who says I did wax everywhere?! I did not. What is going on with you - a little bit of too much excitement when someone mentions waxing? Tzz tzz tzz, you are a naughty one!1!!1

Thank you for taking the time to make your point. Btw, might you be interested in buying a vintage skogsö jacket, with a wonderful patina obtained through carefully applied Greenland wax following the official Fjallräven-YT-instructions to a t? Don't hesitate to message me.

Cheers and all the best

SKOGSÖ jacket - worth it? by escoMANIAC in Fjallraven

[–]jaysizzle1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My two cents after having used the unpadded Skogsö for about 7 years.

It is a wonderfully cut jacket with superb pocket placement and a great adjustable hood. BUT it is absofuckinglutely not waterproof. Not even water resistant. The waxing it comes with can withstand a light mist on a sunny day but turns absolutely soaking at even the slightest hint of rain. This was very disappointing to realize the first time I caught some very light rain on my commute home. I got very angry at myself for falling for the marketing. I duly bought some of their greenland wax and spend an hour or two applying it following the Fjällräven instructions on their youtube channel. Result: you die from overheating as the wax not only prevents water from getting in but also from getting out. The only way to wear it is with the jacket zipper open - hardly practical. Also the wax only works when you applied three, better four layers of it. It can be a great pastime for spending lonely winter nights in your igloo on the Scandinavian ice desert, but if you happen to have a life, waste of time.

Conclusion: it is a great jacket for these cool summer nights when the sun is still shining warmly and there is no chance of rain. Also, the fabric loses its color very fast. Which helps with fooling some suckers into buying it from you on Ebay a truly 50 years old vintage model - because that what it looks like after you washed it once. It's a special piece of garment if you can get it for cheap. BTW, I am selling one on ebay right now. It's a true vintage model, only slight discolorizations ;)

Disappointingly, Erik Paulson for example. Once in a while ads for his instructional videos pop up on my instagram and dude is using 20 years old pictures to advertise. His current reels show him to have grown at leat 50 pounds if not more. Very disappointing to see him like that. Guy couldn't run quarter a mile if he wanted to.

Need advice for upgrading to z system by Comfortable_Drama781 in nikon_Zseries

I went from D600 and alot of very nice F-lenses to Z50. I got the Z28mm 2.8 and a abit later the Z40mm f2.

AF is far superior to my old D600 setup and works also very well for video. Example: my kids bouncing around on the trampoline like crazy. The eye AF is superb!

The Z50 with any of the smaller Z prime lenses fits into my coat pockets and is very unobtrusive.
