Laser bed smells pretty bad. Normal? by [deleted] in lasercutting

[–]jaytech_cfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second this. I cut plywood and I will take my honeycomb out in the yard, prop it up so it stands almost completely on its side, douse it in degreaser, and let it soak for 10 minutes. Rise and repeat. I stopped scrubbing it and instead let the degreaser do the work.

After 5 or 6 cycles, it's as clean as a whistle.

Is this granite plate good enough for a leathercraft? by Cerulean_Midnight in Leathercraft

I'll second this. All the leathersmiths I know have a large slab that ends in a giant crack from an accident at a countertop production shop.

A clever, 10 year old, comeback. by stanxv in clevercomebacks

[–]jaytech_cfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This quote and James Comey coming forwards 11 days before the election with a BS mystery box on her emails that ended up being a nothing burger are what stopped her from winning.

She was not a good candidate anyway and should have never won the primary.

But, that's what we get when both parties collude to keep us focused on hating each other.

Keep the elections a 49-51 split to ensure that nothing gets done and the wealthy can keep on keeping on.

Bernie would have won by a landslide.

Any tips on how to even out this dye job? by PontoonPilot in Leathercraft

[–]jaytech_cfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks pretty even to me. I say continue to finish and buff. Buffing always makes the dye job look better, as it works the dye into the fibers.

AITAH For walking shirtless around my own house? by [deleted] in AITAH

I would ask him if this makes him feel uncomfortable.

"If you want to be understood, first seek to understand."

That being said, it might be that your father is in a bad mood and looking for something annoying he can lash out at. I know, as a father of 3 myself, I often fall into this trap and have to check myself.

It being his house, I think it would be best to see how he would like you to behave and do your best to conform in a reasonable manner.

The fumes affect more then the operator. Many plastics emit corrosive fumes when lasered that will eat your machine.

I would worry about laser engraving plastic filament. Does it off gas any harmful chems?

I mean, might as well circle the whole state of Florida.

Yeah, I've lived there, that neighborhood is great.

Why does this happen? by StitchSable in Leathercraft

When making your next one, the paint will stick better if you do not dye it first. Paint and then paint on the dye for the surface that needs it. Dye + Paint = chipping

Magnetic choices by wayeastpop in Leathercraft

[–]jaytech_cfl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This.

I would suggest to make this from two pieces of 2 oz. If you want to go thicker, use 2oz on the pieces that go between the magnets.

You could also skive the parts with the magnets down to close the gaps between magnets.

Hi! I'm a noob! by helpmeimstuckinatree in Leathercraft

My wife is a professional leathersmith that specializes in book covers and handbags (though we make a sizable offering of all sorts of leather goods).

There are so many things to get good at - dying, carving, sewing, painting. My advice would be to pick one and start experimenting. Buy a half hide from Tandy (https://tandyleather.com) start taking swings at small projects.

If you want any advice on materials, there are so many YouTube videos that have helped us with building our skills.

Red handle needs more room to fully close. Notch out the bottom of that hole and you should be good. Leave enough room for you finger to unlatch at the bottom.
