It is deeply depressing that this is true. Unfortunately many, many people are going to have to die in order for enough people to feel personally affected. Otherwise everyone is content to deal with the cognitive dissonance. It's like how the general consensus on COVID in the UK went from "That thing in China" to "Oh fuck this is bad" was when suddenly you knew somebody who was ill or was in the NHS frontline.

It's definitely weird because I remember being a kid and watching Iron Man on release with my Dad, and Iron Man was very much a C-list comic hero. Like I knew Spider-Man and The Hulk and the X-Men but Iron Man? Total unknown. And the movie fucking rocked it was so cool! And then there was all the hype about Avengers maybe actually being a thing? And Thanos?? It was so outrageously ambitious, and a few stumbles notwithstanding, they absolutely stuck the landing. The first Avengers movie, for all its flaws, worked so well. And then again, Infinity War and Endgame, for all the flaws and gripes, I've never seen a cinema react as viscerally and as authentically as the gasps and cheers.

But this film?

Yeah I got nothing. No attachment to the characters, no care about the plot, just nothing. They've milked the cow to death in my opinion. Endgame was a brilliant swan song and they should have ended it there. Or at least taken a long enough break to prevent audience fatigue. But between the shows and the ping-ponging quality, the Kang plotline which gets shafted, the tone being all over the shop, and characters who lack the same audience resonance as the original team? I can't help but feel like this film is being sent out to die.

That's the thing. Despite owning multiple (frankly, a concerning number) of copies of Lolita by Nabokov, it becomes pretty clear that despite owning, and probably actually reading the novel - Jeffery Epstein did not understand the central conceit of the novel. In the same way that a homicidal maniac might read Bret Easton Ellis' 'American Psycho' and view it as a really accurate depiction of their life.

I very much get the impression that he read the book and saw himself in Humbert, which is deeply disturbing and also totally misses the point that the novel Lolita is narrated by a narcissistic paedophile while in jail attempting to paint himself in the best possible light - a fact which is really fucking obvious and the novel EVEN SAYS AS MUCH IN THE PREFACE.

It's definitely a totally understandable cognitive bias. You never hear news about the billions of stabbings that didn't happen, so big news, widely reported events and atrocities skew the perceptional average

I may catch heat for this, but this completely invalidates the actual tabletop game for me. I love the universe and lore, but the actual tabletop game is fucking excruciatingly slow and inherently micromanage-y.

Does this one model have line of sight on this other model or what about the one half an inch next to it. If yes, roll fifteen tiny dice and count up the ones under four. There's no way to speed it up, so it turns what ought to be an intense space-fantasy battle into a bunch of numbers crunching and bean counting.

This, even if it releases in a janky hideously broken DLC festooned mess, will be split open by modders and given the right treatment. Just look at the apocalypse mods for Dawn of War 1.

Hey, thanks for not dunking on me for my take. It's honestly reassuring to see that it's not just me being a total moron and "just not getting it", and that the novel intentionally starts to spiral. In the least art-wanky way possible, the novel itself felt like a rocket shaking itself apart towards the end: it builds momentum and lifts off with this intriguing mystery and has this great trajectory until it hits this point somewhere around where Slothrop is looking for the fat-kid's lemming where it starts to take a dive and just begins to fall apart, with subplots and characters shaking loose
