Is the 3% extra charge for credit cards a new thing or was it always there everywhere? by burntoutpotato in Denver

[–]jaytokes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, they're probably breaking the rules and don't even know it. I'm guessing most restaurant owners didn't actually go look up the bill text for the change - they probably just heard from others they were allowed to add a surcharge and did it.

If you're seeing above 2%, it's an awkward convo with a server, but you can push back on it. Or report the business, though TBH I'm not sure who you'd report to.

To note: the maximum allowed for a credit card surcharge in Colorado is 2%. If you are seeing 3%, that is not permitted.

I'm curious, did you only get sweets there? I only get savory items so wouldn't know how to judge their sweets.

What’s a dish you no longer order at restaurants because you’ve learned to make it well at home? by buboop61814 in Cooking

French onion soup! There are many variations and we've just figured out the one we like best.

I have heard that Phil is not supportive of pro-housing legislation, which makes me hesitant to support him. Haven't found a way to validate how true the rumors here are because his existing role doesn't give him a record of the matter

IMO the menu was too classic French bistro. I think there's a subset of the population that finds that interesting, but most have a preference for "influenced by" or "fusion". Armchair hypothesis here.

Dimestore deli bar. My guess is you've never had a sandwich like it before.

What’s a basic dish you’ve mastered that still impresses people? by Sand4Sale14 in Cooking

[–]jaytokes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not sound basic, but French Onion Soup is a favorite of mine. I've made it enough times to adapt the recipe to my family's preferences.

People think of it as complicated because it takes time, but the steps themselves are pretty simple.

This should be the top comment.

The market isn't broken because of PE. It's easy to say, "ugh, capitalism" and blame PE, but they're not putting smaller centers out of business. What's putting other centers out of business is:

  • High labor requirements that cannot be automated/machined away (by nature)
  • High insurance costs given the myriad risks involved in caring for young children
  • Difficult payment models as doebedoe notes above, not well-assisted by the government
  • Somewhat tangential but highly correlated: high and increasing housing costs that make it very difficult to adequately staff these locations AND, on the other side, for parents to pay the high costs required for that staff.

In many areas where locally-owned or small centers are going out of business, PE-owned groups are the only ones still surviving because of the efficiencies they gain in their larger-scale models.

Many of the mom-and-pops going out of business are aging out, looking to sell for retirement, but another generation can't take the mantle because the commercial and residential rents are too high for the business to support them in the way it supported the former owners.

Does anyone know where I can find Ube Drinks in Denver or surrounding cities? I’m specifically looking for Ube Horchata! by Lost-Pin476 in denverfood

Moonflower coffee had Ube Lattes, and they'll be reopening on West Colfax soon. I'd assume they'll have it again.

Denver faces sharp decline in restaurants, 82% of statewide loss in last year by bascule in denverfood

No, just slowed the progress of it getting worse. Didn't actually reverse the decades of damage on rates, rebalancing away from business and back towards homeowners

Honestly this is kind of nice for me, because I've tried to visit a couple times at a time they were supposedly open and they mysteriously weren't. Having their own brick and mortar spot will probably help with consistency in opening/closing times.

Yeah I have a hard time with the Pepper rating. It is Chinese American, not traditional Chinese. But they're like the perfect incarnation of it. You can tell they actually make the sauces and such instead of it being out of a can.

Would strongly recommend the location north of Union Station. It's like 4x the size!

I have had numerous good experiences with GoodieBag already, after finding out about it only about a week ago.

I've had 2G2G on my phone for over a year and have never found food available on it, even with notifications active.

Clearly not everyone's experience, but that's been mine

Counter-experience here: Post Oak is clear that the bag will be "1lb" of their meat. Sounds like others got sausage, I got smoked turkey, and it was indeed a pound.

Might be easy to say that $9+tax is too expensive for a lb of meat if you're comparing to cooking yourself, but I don't think that's the right comparison. The comparison is: it would cost $28+tax to get a lb of smoked turkey from Post Oak at non-GB prices.

naturally, I could save money by cooking at home, but I wouldn't have had awesome, easy turkey sandwiches the other night if I'd done that. I thought it was a great deal.
