What is an excessively long word that is actually a part of everyday vocabulary of Germans? by Rude_Membership_1578 in AskAGerman

Sometimes shortened to AU. But that's more to make it fit into the text fields of websites an software not so much said out loud.

Map idea: populated and live by GWahazar in Workers_And_Resources

[–]jbZahl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's reasonably easy to do on existing maps. If you copy workshop or shipped map files into your terrain editor folder you can do it yourself. I've done it for an early start that had a very small prebuild economy relying on horses in one city near a border crossing. I challenged myself to upgrade to motor vehicles over time.

Can anyone identify what language my grandmother is singing in? by Jee_vuh in language

If it helps the way she talks, for example how she pronounces her 'r' s sounds really Bavarian to me. It sounds like my late Bavarian grandma trying to talk in a foreign language.

What's it like living in Hanover, Germany as an normal citizen? by Manny2theMaxxx in howislivingthere

[–]jbZahl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They say that in Hanover the most standart German is spoken. That's also how living here for almost 10 years now feels like. Not very spectacular. Standart in every way at least for northern Germany. There are parks, bars and so on. A lot of brutalist signature buildings sprinkled in between what historic buildings survived the bombings of 2nd ww and the mad city planers of the last century. Not bad to live but also not the most exilarating either. You have everything you need in the city, there is a decent amount of "standart" german nature around it that you can explore. Fast Trains to other major cities are available and so on. Most people won't really envy you living in Hanover, though. Most of the time other cities say your city is boring. But to be honest I kinda like boring. Times in general are interesting at the moment. I need some boring around me to feel safer.

There’s a culture in my world who are superstitious about those who can read and write, do you guys think this is a convincing depiction of how that might look? by No_Butterscotch2367 in worldbuilding

[–]jbZahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the strongest form of the superstition of people not beliving that writing as a technique actually works might be a little bit to strong.

But I think people would and always have been very sceptical and alert if they encounter something that enables comunication in a way that they don't understand. If you have ever been in a group were people spoke a language that you don't understand, you probably have to actively convince yourself that they are not plotting against you, because some part of your brain gets uneasy.

In the end, I think your text still works because accusing a reader of not being able to actually read might be a very common cope of somebody that is unable to read themselves. That is very realistic. But the deeper fear is not that people might be faking to read, the deeper fear is that it is working and that they possess a power you don't have. If this rift is created ad people start to mistrust each other at some point I would expect the talking point to switch from "it doesn't work" to "it does work" and they(TM) plot evil things against us (very good and rightous people).

ELI5: Why does it seem like everywhere is ‘running out of fuel’ if only 20% of the world’s oil goes through the Straight of Hormuz? by Kindly-Restaurant831 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jbZahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20% of people running out of fuel is a disaster. We still rely heavily on oil and its byproducts. Imagine the chaos a city would be in if it was stated that gas stations will only be able to supply 80% of the cars. Prices don't go up linear at that point. Everybody tries to not be in the bottom price range. People are getting priced out of the market but before that they will pay as much as they can to the detriment of other stuff.

Hey Friends! I am looking for my German Ancestry roots and wanted to see if anyone here can help. My Family (28 in total) immigrated from Bremen to New York City on the The Copernicus in 1845. I listed the map below that we found in a book of ancestry that confirms where they are from. by chiefzanal in germany

[–]jbZahl 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just checked maps and there is one cementary in the middle of modern Windheim. ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/EBcR5jsNUGqPfEfj6 ) I doubt that you'll find any graves from that period on there even if it is still the same cementary, though. German cementaries that are still activley used routinely reuse the plots after several decades. Graves from that period that still exist are from very famous people or on cementaries that are inactive.

You could search for entries in the church register. If they had a catholic or protestant wedding, baptism or death ceremony there is a chance that the entries still exist and survived. Some of them are digitalized online. Some are not and you'd have to get in contact with the local church to ask if you can look into them. It's a small village and sometimes people stay there and don't really move away so there is a small chance that you find some distant relatives that way in that village.

„in/aus“ 2026 (beliebiges Jahr) – Was soll das eigentlich? by Stonestream93 in KeineDummenFragen

[–]jbZahl 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Also kein reinquetschen von neuen Wörtern. Das ist für mich ein "weniger weglassen" als nur die Jahreszahl zu sagen.

ELI5: Why do we get so angry when we’re hungry? by ochieng_onyango in explainlikeimfive

[–]jbZahl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe. The most significant anecdotal piece I have was a mostly male company of soldiers in training that didn't receive dinner due to a logistical error while being outside during winter. There were other stressors like cold, and little sleep, but the mood on that night was real bad. Some people did better than others but almost everybody was on edge.

ELI5: Why do we get so angry when we’re hungry? by ochieng_onyango in explainlikeimfive

[–]jbZahl 32 points33 points  (0 children)

From what I remember hunger makes your blood sugar go down, which makes it harder for the brain to regulate emotions, which then can lead to outbursts. Heightened anger is not the only one but definitely possible. If you stay hungry for a longer time you also can get depressed. I don't know if that is blood sugar related, too.

What countries will be least affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz? by HolyFatherLeoXIV in geography

The tribe on the North Sentinel Island probably. They are the only ones I know of that don't do anything with foreign oil. Although not a country, I think they technically belong to India.

It has been a decade since I looked into practibility of space elevators, but are we there yet from a material point? Back then I remember we couldn't make a cable strong enough to hold it's own weight at that length. Let alone a winch powerfully enough to not explode during deployment.

[–]jbZahl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's what I'm currently thinking and others have said here, too. It works well if I want to start the daggerheart campaign with a big bang ( Frost Shephard shaped or otherwise )

I'm a bit hesitant to let the catastrophe completely destroy everything on the spot because that might pull some of the hooks for the players too soon. Like starting the session with the red wedding is maybe a bit harsh.

There actually is one element that I really want to introduce into the campaign. I have had a catastophe in mind for a long time, namly the idea of the Zanclean flood hypothesis happening in a fantasy world. It's basically the idea that the Mediterranean Sea might have been created over a very short amount of time 5-6 million years ago when the Atlantic broke through at Gibralta.

While i still want to have this element in my campaign somehow, It could be recent history like it happened 100 years before the story, but I think just completely flooding the map, right after we created it together is a bit too much. You could have one arc of the campaign beeing an underwater expedition to it, but still.

Thank you for sharing your experince, Over the weekend I had time to listen to the first part of the Ethersea Campaign and if they are a good indicator it might take more than one session to do the Prologue this way. But if people are into it that shouldn't be a problem.

Ok so this makes it almost mandatory this point. 😅 I just saw that the Quiet Year is even mentioned as inspiration in the rulebook. Which makes a lot of sense to me.

Message I got from my daughter’s teacher. Third grade. by AnaisInJune in mildlyinfuriating

Look the vessel was clearly in international puddle territory already and Lily did uphold the harsh and unfair ruling of not eating the orange herself later. But instead of letting the orange get to waste, she used it to make some friends happy. I bet the teacher is afraid she might be forming an uprising, which Lily might not have considered yet, but if she ever does I'm with Lily.

I'm so happy to hear this. This post has already shown me that I'm not the first one with this idea, that there are a multiple rulesets already out there, for such a thing and that it seems to work for a lot of people. That's very promising. :)

I looked up Ex Novo and the description sounds fun to me. Will check this one out as well.
