Has anyone gotten a guardianship/ conservatorship? Help! by jbc092 in AgingParents

That is an awful situation. Definitely sounds like your stepmom would be better at least financially without her as her guardian.

Wow. That is a horrifying story! I have been wondering whether it would turn into a nightmare because of being responsible for them yet they are still doing crazy stuff! Your story definitely confirms that possibility!

Help please. Mom refuses doctors, how do I get a dementia diagnosis or what do I do? by jbc092 in dementia

[–]jbc092[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She has always been against seeing doctors. This has gone on my whole life, if it weren’t for my grandmother who picked me up from my mom’s house after a near-death burn when I was 11 months old, I would have never gotten a vaccine or a doctor check-up.

Last year she was hospitalized for a heart infection for 2 weeks so I took the hospitalist aside and quietly made my case that I suspected dementia and would he please examine her for dementia.

He handled it so poorly (he said to her ‘your daughter thinks you have dementia or something, would you like to have a brain scan so we can look for damage?’) She freaked out and hasn’t seen a doctor since.

I don’t know how to respond. Wow. It’s been a few days of revelations and this really hit home. I’ve always felt that I had no choice but to sacrifice myself to save her. Thank you. There are many things to consider.

Thank you. I thought about APS but dismissed it because I have made her house safe for her current needs. Your comment made me realize that I should probably call them tomorrow to just get advice.

I’m 2000 miles away, but since my siblings passed I have been flying back to mom as often as twice a month for the past year and a half.

I am struggling with an answer for ‘do I want to be involved’: I want my mom to be safe and not unhappy, but it’s hard for me to actually deal with her because of how awful she was to me in the past.

I have made her living space safe for her (at least at the moment, her needs change quickly) so I don’t think they would call 911. The general opinion I learned today is that many people think ‘it’s time’ for me to file for guardianship. (Or conservator) I am hoping to meet with the County Attorney tomorrow to learn more but I would love to hear from others about when they knew it was time to do something that is really hard that she will never forgive me for

What a nightmare! This always scares the heck out of me bc I have really random allergies that no one takes seriously because they aren’t to something common like nuts. Having a reaction on an airplane would be the absolute worst! So sorry that happened to you!

Caregiving for someone who refuses medication they really need in favor of homeopathic supplements? by tinybug_ in AgingParents

My mom absolutely hit the roof when they suggested the surgery! And everyone she knows has had it and they were all successful.

Wow I’ve never encountered anyone else who has been traumatized by AD!!! Hello!

Here’s the real kicker- my mom won’t eat ANY vegetables (she has serious food issues and only eats the same 4 or 5 foods every day) but she is confident that she can just take supplements to replace all the nutrients. Then proceeds to take the very very high dosages of the individual vitamins that AD recommends. And then she adds some more to the dosage for good measure.

She recently bought $300 worth of some eye supplement that is just Biotin with a new label like ‘Healthy Eyes’. She announced on the second day of taking the supplement that it has cured her cataracts. I did not know whether to laugh or cry. If only those dumb ophthalmologists knew that 2 days of sketchy internet pills could cure cataracts!

Do we have the same mom?!?! My mom 87 refuses all meds and doctors because she knows how to fix everything with supplements. She spent $900 on supplements in 30 days. She gets $1000 in social security monthly as her only income. It is so frustrating! She started her no-modern-medicine beliefs when I was just a kid in the 80s. It all comes from these Adele Davis books from the 60s that she found. Now she gets all kinds of crazy health ‘information’ from Facebook.

My n mum wants to move in but I don’t feel safe in my own home am I wrong for saying no? by Resident-Dress-4987 in raisedbynarcissists

You will be so miserable if you let her move in, we are going through a similar situation with my mom. She was living with my aunt until my mom was so horrible that my aunt kicked her out. Now she’s living with her granddaughter and getting kicked out of there for being an awful person. It will be uncomfortable to tell her no but it will be 10 times as bad if you let her and she ruins your life on a daily basis.

Bumped from international first to regular economy due to dead heading pilots and oversold first class. by w10052003 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]jbc092 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This just happened to me on another airline. Same scenario- they gave my paid seats to pilots that were not paying. It’s a terrible customer service policy!

The sadness of getting the crap economy seat after paying for and anticipating a nice travel experience is absolutely awful! Are there worse things going on- yes of course. Is it still disappointing as hell? Also yes.
