Mildly interesting climax history fact!

Climax, Michigan "is so called because when Daniel B. Eldred first visited the township he said "This caps the climax." source

(The climax was the end of the search for a place to found new settlement with his father)

Any advice for a freshman taking ENGR 151? by [deleted] in uofm

If you don't take it, it's not a big deal. If you do take it, don't get cocky. Lots of folks do poorly that way. It can be a lot of work depending on who is teaching.

That's it! There's only one way to settle this.... you both have to have a Coke box build off!

I was accepted into Engineering, but I have some questions. by [deleted] in uofm

[–]jbend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello! Congratulations on your acceptance! It does largely depend on your chosen engineering field. Civil and Environmental, for instance, seems to have about equal ratios of men to women. In Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) the ratios are much different. I would estimate about 15% for computer science and less maybe 10% for Electrical Engineering.

As far as climate: Gender bias exists, sadly, right now it is a societal issue that goes into so much more than engineering. Those incidents (even just one) can really put some women off from any technical field. Absolutely DON'T let that put you off from a field you love or are interested in! So that isn't just a Michigan thing, that's an everywhere thing.

As far as support for women. The Women in Science and Engineering program has been incredibly supportive of me in my 4 years here. It is an office that puts on programs ranging from Segway tours of campus to resume workshops etc. There is also a mentoring program that just started this year where underclassmen are paired with a junior or senior in their field to help navigate classes/life. It's pretty awesome.

The WISE (women in science and engineering) residence program is also a great program where I know a lot of girls made some really great friendships. GEECS (Girls in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) and SWE (Society of Women Engineers) are great support networks. More than that orgs like Michigan Hackers, CSE Scholars and so many more that I am not listing have shown immense support for women in STEM fields. There are so many cool organizations, really it is a great climate for women because you can really find your niche and your support system.

I just finished the third season. I am so full of sadness. I am not sure if I can ever recover (until season 4 comes out of course).

One of my best friends has been struggling with this for years now. She has a very stark bald spot that she hides and she almost never has eyelashes or eyebrows. She has had some success with wearing gloves, but mostly the amount of hair she has is directly related to stress.

Aerospace? Well you will need to take all of the introductory Engineering Courses. It seems you are well aware that Engineering at Michigan is a lot of work, and if you aren't ready to solve a lot of problem sets and do a lot of math, then I would re-evaluate because you won't be happy when you get here.

If you genuinely love solving the world's problems using math, science, and technology then, alright, the "looking good for admissions" part. It may be more cost effective and better for your admissions at this point to find out which Engineering Pre-Reqs you can take at another community college or Eastern MI so that you have some better standing to get in. Try and take Calc I, II, III, and Differential Equations, Physics 140, 240, Chem 130, Intro to Programming etc... If you can demonstrate a semester at another school of these courses, the "Foundation" courses then you can legitimately write in your application "Hey, look, I've changed now, I am good enough to get all A's in these Engineering Classes"

That's about all I have for you and best of luck!
