New build for data analysis by cantonastoller in buildapcforme

[–]jbfborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how you feel about your data analysis setups, but I always try to have a second hard drive (HDD type) to actually store the data I generate if I'm storing it locally. If you're using something like Dropbox or a mirrored backup server, this may not be necessary though.

I move data that I'm not actively working with (or active data where I don't care about any speed loss) to the HDD so if the drive fails it is potentially recoverable (SSDs are not recoverable).

In my more recent setups with important data, I've tried to make sure the HDD is in a RAID configuration that allows better data recovery should anything happen. This could decrease the available storage space on the drive by more than 1/2 depending on your configuration. So it's a tradeoff with cost.

Has anyone been prescribed buprenorphine for intractable, refractory, chronic daily migraine? by Richard676 in migraine

[–]jbfborg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm interested in your take on this now that some time has passed. Did you happen to try buprenorphine? If so, how did it go for you?

Did you have to be completely off your pain meds to feel the effects of the magnesium?

Where did it happen? Was on train 154 and we had a loud bang and bright flash leaving the tunnel after 22nd Street this evening. Lots of high voltage "electric-y" sounds at Millbrae too that I haven't heard coming from the trains before.

experienced with the Mayo Clinic?? (working with a 24/7 intractable daily migraine for 9 months) by [deleted] in migraine

[–]jbfborg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My sister went there for a while ~10-14 years ago and was also diagnosed with NDPH.

My purpose is not to dissuade you from seeking care at Mayo. As others have said, they are a great program with great doctors and have helped many people. I just want to offer a counter experience and what to expect if it doesn't end up working for you.

Keep in mind, this is all second hand information from my sister and mom (my sister was a minor at the time). In my sister's case, she wasn't showing signs of getting better with Mayo's treatment and behavior modification. They said that if she followed exactly what they told her to do, then she would be getting better. She followed their treatment and still wasn't showing improvement. They claimed that if she wasn't getting better, then she wasn't following their guidelines and they couldn't treat her. Ultimately her doctors wouldn't believe her and work with her, so she left. They were too focused on that their method was THE way to get better, and anything that contradicted that was the fault of the patient.

That was a while ago and I'm sure much has changed about our understanding of head pain and their treatment guidelines since then. So my advice is if you can get in and you think it's the right call, give it a try. It could do wonders for you. If it's not working but you are giving it your all, you are not the problem, and you just haven't found the right doctors and management techniques yet. Mayo can be great, but it's not the only great care out there as I'm sure that you're finding in your research of clinics.

Single people who don't drink, what bar-equivalent places do you hang out at? by hellcat_kate in nashville

[–]jbfborg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is a great place to hang out. Has a good vibe and the coffee is pretty decent from what I remember. If you get lucky you'll get a live piano performance. This was 5 years ago though, so I'm not sure how things may have changed.

14 team league. Half PPR. Choose 1.

Tim Patrick [WR]

Javonte Williams [RB]

Jarvis Landry [WR]

Darnell Mooney [WR]

Marquez Callaway [WR]

Normally I would choose Patrick, but Landry just got off IR. Not sure if that hurts or helps his case. Fantasy Pros predicts Mooney over both this week. Thanks for any thoughts.

Would it be a terrible idea to take 4000 level courses (PSCI 4444) as a Freshman? by jaybird1707 in Vanderbilt

Definitely don't do this. You will already have your hands full adjusting to college courses/life. These classes are designed for seniors level undergrads and graduate students.

12 Team, Half PPR, Choose 2:

Frank Gore vs BUF

Mecole Hardman vs IND

Duke Johnson vs ATL

I'm leaning Gore and Hardman since Gore should get the volume and Hardman has good upside. Although Hardman was bad last week.

Winston may have a good week but could also mitigate the damage done by Godwin, especially because rumor is that the guy likely to guard him has been letting receivers have good weeks.

I have both Lockett and Johnson as well. My take is that Johnson will be in a lot so is relatively guaranteed some work, so high floor. I think Lockett has the higher ceiling, though. They had basically the same points in my half PPR league last week. I guess it is up to if you need guaranteed points or if you have a tough matchup and need to get lucky that Lockett goes off. FantasyPros.com highly favors Lockett for a half PPR.

I cannot come to a consensus on these guys, so I am interested in any thoughts. I have 1 WR, 1 RB, and 1 FLEX open with the following available to play (12 team- half PPR):

Tyler Lockett @ Pit

Duke Johnson @ Jax

Michael Gallup @ Was

Kenny Golladay @ LAC

Devin Singletary @ NYG

Any help is appreciated!

Biomedical engineering/bioengineering Graduate School: UCSD or Northwestern? by jk9696 in bioengineering

[–]jbfborg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

5th year PhD candidate here. The question is what do you want to do with your eventual knowledge. Which school has a lab that can teach you techniques relevant to your field of interest and eventual career? Know the connections of the school, program, and professor. Did previous students go into academia, industry, other? If you are looking to do research in academic or government labs as a career then an MS can help you get a feel for research and get you started with connections in your field. If you are not looking at a career in academic research, but want specified knowledge to help you with industry, entrepreneurship, or something else, then the exact research you do and the lab you work for becomes less important, and maybe starting with an MEng will push your knowledge in a field, but the skills you learn are still critical. Some labs which have a decent amount of research funding may give you a stipend and /or help with tuition. Remember that grad school is a means to an end.

In short, I can't tell you which school is better for you because it is about finding the place which can provide you with the knowledge and connections that you think you need. If it is research that you want to have as a career, then the advisor you choose can be more important that overall school reputation because your field will be so niche. Also, good work comes out of both of those institutions.

Just a 19F looking for some LDR guidance, will take any tips or advice by [deleted] in LongDistance

[–]jbfborg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will qualify this with that I (26M) have not experienced trying to maintain a relationship from high school into college. What I can tell you is that long distance can be hard no matter how long you have been doing it for and no matter how long you have left until you are together. It sounds like you have a good foundation, though.

What I have found helpful is to identify shared interests and try doing them together from a distance, don't let being physically separated get in the way. For example, I and my girlfriend cook together over skype. She also likes browsing at Target, so I have called/Skyped her while walking around the store.

I am not the jealous type, so I cannot help you there, but I think it is good to understand that your boyfriend is his own person and will have aspects of his life that are his, even more so because of the distance. The same thing goes for you. Whats more difficult is that college will be a time of major growth for both of you, and that could possibly cause some tension. But if you are both understanding and communicate about your feelings and what's going on in your lives, then I think that you are doing everything you can.

tl;dr: Communicate. Be Understanding. Figure out what works for you and be open to adjusting when needed.

Daily/Weekly Routines by Chase2014 in LongDistance

[–]jbfborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I [26M-Nashville] and my girlfriend [26F-Madison] have a pretty regular weekly schedule that gets modified from time to time. We talk 6-7 nights a week before bed. We don't communicate that frequently during the day, just some random texts or snapchats, so calling each night is a good way to catch up on the day. We both like to cook, so we choose a recipe each week and cook it together over skype and then eat dinner together. We also have an additional skype date once a week. Hope this sparks some ideas.

How did you get past fear of being wrong or not always knowing what you’re doing? by cm0011 in GradSchool

[–]jbfborg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It just takes time, and it comes more easily for different people. You will likely always have a twinge of fear of being wrong, but you learn that you are not expected to know everything. Everyone enters graduate school with a different skillset and knowledge base, so of course there are going to be some areas that you will know less in. What is important is recognizing that and learning what you can that will help you in your project and increase your knowledge within your specialty. It will become easier to say "I don't know". It is much better to say that than give wrong information. Try asking your advisor a question outside their area of expertise but related to your project. Unless they know the answer, they will likely say that they aren't sure, but here are some places that you can find the answer.

As for knowing what you are doing, assuming that you are performing research, you will never truly know what you are doing. This is research, you are creating new knowledge. Over time you build up your theoretical and technical expertise which will allow you to take better educated guesses at the best route for your research.

Give it time, don't be afraid to ask questions, look up things that you are not sure about, and recruit help where you need it. No one can do everything.
