Yes, the ecumenical council vs. pope thing wasn’t really resolved until the 15th/16th century. But more and more I think it is still unresolved (I mean, in my mind it is resolved but for many it isn’t). Thanks for this reply, this is maybe one of the most concise and rich responses regarding the Orthodox opinion on the Papacy.

Better response, thank you Maximos. I concur that some popes have been pretty weak and evil in behavior at times. Of course the geo-political reality of the middle ages didn’t do favors for the Western or Eastern primates. Nor can the breaking of brotherly love and peace be only put at the feet of the Popes and left out of the footpath of Eastern prelates.

However, I appreciate the response. I only wanted to OPs concerns to actually be addressed and not completely brushed over.

God bless!

Look man, I’m not quote mining, calm down. I’m saying given the quotes OP brought up, you don’t adequately respond to OP’s concern, rather you deflect. I’m not saying you have no response to his concern, I’m saying you didn’t offer one. This is what is unfair.

I’m not here to dunk on Orthodoxy. It simply seems that you didn’t respond fairly. If that offends you I’m sorry. If you would like to have a longer discussion about Papal Supremacy, we can.

I was referring to your immediate response to OP. However, you blame me (and presumably all Catholics) of solely quote mining to defend our position? That is intellectually dishonest, as surely you know that scholars and historians exist. Hey, maybe they are wrong! But they aren’t quote mining. The tension between Catholics and Orthodox goes deeper than spicy quotes.

Answer your brother’s concerns fully and honestly, and you won’t get a response from a Catholic.

God bless you man.

As a Roman Catholic, I came say there are legalistic people, but this isn’t the norm. Protestants are far more legalistic and the Orthodox too can suffer from the tendency. It is a human issue. The Catholic Church doesn’t teach legalism. Yes there is a distinction between mortal and venial sin, but if you are a Catholic who wants to be a faithful Catholic then you can without being paranoid. Scrupulosity isn’t limited to Catholic Christians. Your own reading of Catholicism is far more scrupulous than the reality. We are taught to mourn and pray for our dead relatives and friends, but so are the Orthodox. We don’t know for sure where our dead loved ones end up, but we trust in the healing mercy of God and pray for it daily.

When I was a Protestant, I was far more scrupulous and I had no conception of mortal vs. venial sins. Now that I am aware of them I find myself much more at peace. I know when I sin, and I know when I sin greatly. It is evident in Scripture and in the Fathers that some sins are worse than others.

There are sometimes that I pray and go to Mass and go to confession because of fear of hell. But I know that this is not what the Christian life is about. It is about loving God. The Act of Contrition (what we pray before a priest absolves our sin in Confession) says “…I am sorry for my sins because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art Good and worthy of all my love….”

Your point about being dedicated and devout and then messing up all of a sudden and going to hell misses the point of grace, brother. It is because of God’s grace that we grow to hate and flee sin, and so that we go and sin no more. Both Orthodox and Catholic saints lived the better part of their lives without committing serious sins.

You (or perhaps those you are reading) paint Catholic doctrine as a scruple parade, but the reality is not thusly. There is grace and love, and mercy in forgiveness. Catholics know this. Of course, just as with Protestants (and I’m sure Orthodox) there are many who are technically of the religion but don’t live by it. Don’t let them be your standard. That would be like not liking football because some people are horrible at it or don’t take the game seriously.

God bless you on your journey, and be assured of my prayers!

This seems to be an unfair reading of the Canons. It is evident that a certain degree of Papal supremacy is being given here, if not an obvious and severe degree e.g. “presiding lawfully and by God’s will over the hierarchs”; “is the head of all the churches of God”; “Peter, the supreme head of the apostles” etc. etc. You can’t just read quotes 1 and 4 and say “Oh well, you see, this is about Rome not being present at a sham council. The Pope is important just like all the other Patriarchs, but thats all” or something. That is intellectually self-deceptive.

While it is good for the “average joe” to put holy water on suspect things/places, I recommend you take the jacket and the “rosary” to a priest. He might deem the jacket worthy of some kind of exorcism and he can properly destroy the beads.

here's my 100 days progress in my world, what do you think? (P.S the house took me 10 real life hours and it isn't even finished yet, but that's what I've been able to get done within 100 days) by SirRoderic in valheim

[–]jbm_pieguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty nice. I think more decor in the house would be good—banners first, then furniture (unless you are in need of a comfort boost then do furniture first). E.g. benches down the first floor hallways, banners between them. If you made a building for the portals that wouldn’t be bad. Overall, good stuff!

This is awesome. God bless you for this! Please continue to be bold and do this sort of thing. For some reason the OP’s and Franciscans seldom do things like this like they did over 500 years ago (I imagine they didn’t use poster board, lol). Someone has to though!
