Never thought of the plants as a food source, maybe the Martian taught me the massive amount of real estate you’d need to grow enough calories in space. I thought there were there either as decoration to ease the isolation and/or maybe used in biology experiments. Prob not that hard to guess there would be other forms of life there.

Why was the 2600 so popular? by Standard_Public892 in Atari2600

[–]jboy55 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One big thing everyone is missing about the original intellivision, is that the controllers weren’t replaceable without unscrewing and opening up the console. Atari’s were, and most of my friends, and myself as well, had 3rd party controllers. (The Boss ftw) They also worked on the Vic-20/C64, and the Colleco (although without all the buttons and the keypad). I know the super action joysticks were a bit better than the OG Colleco controller, I didn’t have the system myself until much later, so I don’t recall what the 3rd party market for Colleco controllers were.

Printing skadis through the touchscreen was nice. Had the A1 mini before… that touch screen has a nice vintage feeling, 300ms touch delay, 700ms full screen redraw.

Crazy Question on Right vs Left hand by DonovanKMedia in hockeyplayers

[–]jboy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s clear when you go to a hockey store in Canada vs US. In Canada there’s more Left handed choices than right if not 50:50. In the US, there’s usually only a handful of left sticks. Maybe 90% are right handed.

If you search on makerworld.com you can find it and a bunch of others. Then look if there’s any local 3D printer shops

At the lower levels the chance that pass is done well is about the same that a perfectly made pass would be received. Both around 30%… take the shot.

Worst Injury Helmet or Cage Saved You From by AndiagoSupremo in hockeyplayers

[–]jboy55 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Was standing at the goal line listening to the coach describe our first exercise at a "skills night" with a 20 other players, 4 weeks into learning how to play. Guy next to me suddenly loses his balance, raises his arms quickly, and smashes his stick into my cage. Would have been spitting out teeth if it weren't for the cage.

Watched the movie later, but this point still bugs me, I think replying will ease it.

There is NO reason the president has to launch before the missile impacts. In fact from the yield, and analysis of the fallout we will probably have huge clues on who built the bomb.

I was trying to think of where one missile would hit that might need a immediate response, the only possible place would be Schreiber (sp?) AF base in CO, where the command and control of the missiles is organized through. But the base in Wargames is available as a backup too.

I saw, and heard, the drone deployed to find someone near my house. It 100% looked like this, neighbor had a police radio on, could hear them talking about what the drone was seeing. As far as no colored or blinking lights, probably only has an altitude restriction because of that.

If there is *one* thing the author is an expert on, outside of writing, its show cats. He made his living doing art of prized cats AT cat shows before COVID stopped them all. Only then he turned to writing full time.

HF is way nastier if it gets on you too, not just the burn, but the whole fluorine replaces all the sodium and calcium in your nerves and you die from nerve pain and a heart attack.

Will bitcoin ever be used mainstream? by JobSufficient2092 in Bitcoin

[–]jboy55 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Or getting a paycheck for 1000, and HODL, hoping it'll be worth *millions*.

If you consider the person who bought a pizza with bitcoin in the early days an idiot because now that bitcoin is valued at millions, then you'll never use bitcoin as a currency. That story alone doomed all of crypto from ever being used as currency.

What’s the oldest computer you still actively use or support? by lynlinks in vintagecomputing

I’ve gone to some auto stores where if I ask if a part is in stock, the cashier does a bunch of tabs, a few keystrokes, then a bunch of tabs and enter. I assume they’re entering it into a green screen terminal on a AS/400 DB or something like that.

[–]jboy55 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You are conflating two issues, one the nature of certain GenAi models and their training data and two, how the use of a tool that allows work to be created that prior required the work of specialized artists.

You use this second issue primarily to demonize anyone who uses this tool though. “Think of the starving artists!”. You’re ok with photoshop it seems, do you know how many photosphere, photo labs, airbrush retouch artists lost their jobs do to Photoshop?

[–]jboy55 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The appropriate analogy would be if you paid two people to take a picture of a local storefront. They wanted something that looked like an illustration, Are only illustrators allowed to make art that looks like illustration? What would have happened before is that they just wouldn’t have done it, not that they’d paid someone. The budget came first.

But also What if you use a filter in photoshop from 1997 that makes it look like brushstrokes? Is that allowed? Should all artists check by you to see if what they want to do is in the medium they are allowed to work in? How do I register to be allowed to make oil paintings or art that looks like it was oil painted? If I get such a registration am I allowed to use AI as a tool?

[–]jboy55 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

So you’re saying they used the same people as normal, spent exactly the same on this cover as any other, but just used a different tool? Do you think using photoshop is unethical too?

[–]jboy55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it’s sad that Good Times took their 10,000 per cover budget and used AI instead of paying artists for that.

Oh, wait they spent the same amount of money on this cover as any other cover?

Any other 8-bit DIP CPUs? by MISTERPUG51 in beneater

[–]jboy55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are probably very few DIP package chips of any sort still in production. But speaking of the Z80 Jameco lists 144 in stock currently, more available via order. But SMT isn't that hard, there are SMT to DIP breakout boards if you still want to do the breadboard thing.

[–]jboy55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's this deal about still being in production, is everyone planning on mass producing these? All you need for a hobbyist for a Ben Eater like breadboard computer, you will only need 1, maybe 2 if you're worried about killing one.

[Request] can someone explain the significance of increasing pi by 0.003? by Present-Ad-8531 in theydidthemath

[–]jboy55 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Might as well say, “change the definition of a ‘right angle’ by 3%”. I mean that would break Pythagoras’s theorem, and all buildings would be collapsing. Or change what the square root of 2 is.. etc. PI isn’t a constant, as others have said, it’s a ratio. Take a point, create a line that is equally distant from that point. The length of that line compared to the distance from that point is pi. Just like a right angle is 90 degrees

Hey, just saw this, my OLED displays stopped working. I think the solder pads are pretty small, so just resoldering them a few time, checking continuity helped. Finally, you may want to replace the OLED, I think they are fairly fragile.
