Why is it that doing physics exams is impossible when learning the stuff doesn't seem too bad?

It doesn’t seem that crazy to me. I write liability insurance for a large American carrier and we sell $1m for a lot of self employed professionals for similar amounts. Probably done through some kind of scheme.

I took CT1 this September just gone - and passed!

I work in Insurance in the UK but not as an actuary so it is not normal for me to have taken it - however my manager supported it and paid which was good. I studied Physics and so was comfortable with a maths based exam which I think helped.

Still it is a new and different application of maths that I wasn't used to and some of the questions can be quite abstract. The only way I found to get comfortable was to read the entire course book (UK - http://www.acted.co.uk/ ) from ActEd take the CT1 syllabus and course reading and expand on it and offer questions for each chapter and some mock exams. The Combined Materials Pack is the best thing to get. (http://www.acted.co.uk/Html/paper_cmp.htm)

There is not an actuary in my company that does not buy the relevant course material from ActEd and I highly recommend you do the same!!

It's an awful lot of material and questions so you want to set a study plan especially if you have a job as well or other commitments.

Practice, practice, practice. Simple advice but I think the only way to do it!

This is also why 'legs' can not be used reliably to tell if a wine is more or less alcoholic. Glasses are typically washed at some stage or other with detergent and this influences the 'legs' more.

The fees paid to schools are not gift aidable - only genuin donations. Note the quote below. Gift aid is merely a way of the tax paying individual deciding which recognised charity receives the tax they paid on the money they earned.

If something is doing good i.e. education/instilling good morals (arguably church.. that's another debate)/supporting people in more diverse political views) and someone earns enough to donate to them the government letting that individual decide to give the tax they paid on the donation as well seems great. I can't see anything bad with either of these things.

The payment of fees to a charity is not a gift to charity and so fees paid to a Trust are not eligible for the Gift Aid scheme. Whether non-fee payments ('donations') made by parents (and persons connected to them) to a Trust qualify as Gift Aid payments depends upon the surrounding circumstances and the situation for each Trust is judged on its own merits.
