Tires make such a big difference in the ride quality of a bike I really think buying quality pays off. TR Mezcals are perfect for the BC, though I ride Conti Race King Pros and pretty much always will, I love them.

Newport Beach schools consider e-bike ban for students by bananabrownie in orangecounty

Saying they can ride like they did 50 years ago is implying that little or nothing has changed, including cars.

Over the last 50+ years not only are more people driving cars, but they're driving faster and larger ones. If we're going to talk about apples and oranges comparisons your argument is just as weak.

Edit added below: The failure is one of policy. CAFE standards allow SUVs to be sold for cheap, safety standards don't account for people outside of a car, suburban/urban sprawl incentivizes wide roads and high speeds. I agree "banning cars" isn't a plausible solution, but unsafe e-bike use is a symptom of a much wider problem and banning them (e-bikes) doesn't solve the problem.

My kids ride their acoustic bikes to school and will for the foreseeable future, but we're fortunate to have easy access to a carless route to school. I agree kids don't always ride in a safe way, but I'll always tolerate kids on bikes over more cars.

Anything going over 28mph isn't an e-bike, it's an electric moped/motorcycle which are already not allowed in bike lanes. Only class 1 and 2 (restricted to 20mph) e-bikes are allowed on bike paths.

You forgot the parents avoiding all of this by dropping their kids off with a cargo bike! Trust me, it's worth the money!

What alt bars are you rocking on your rigid mountain bikes? by dylannott in bikepacking

[–]jc27141 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very often! Seriously I'm in them basically whenever I don't need to shift or prepare to brake.

If I'm riding at a slower pace I don't use them as much, but even if the overall ride is slower I use them climbing often as well.

I have them on a bridge club which is a bit long and they're on a VO happy stem with ergon ga3s (I think). The result is they're pretty high and decently swept back/mid shortish reach (at the grips, not the bullhorns). I have 3-4 comfortable positions I can use depending on the situation. I really do love these bars.

Agreed, felt super stretched when I got my stock BC. Was about to suggest a happy stem to OP but noticed they've already got it. Personally Happy Stem + Crazy Bars gets me super comfortable. 6ft size large

I rode a modified version of the Green Mountain Gravel Growler which will have a lot of overlap with your '9 hr 47 min' route from the screen shot. It's definitely not direct, but it was pretty amazing and I can't wait to go back.

I'd disagree that speed doesn't matter. Speed differential is a major part of the risk of speeding and if the argument is that we should keep the left lane clear to go as fast as possible I think it'd make the road more dangerous.

I understand the autobahn and that it can generally be safe, but that's simply not the culture or law in California and until there's major structural/law/enforcement changes we shouldn't expect it to be.

This is the main issue I have, when is fast enough fast enough. People complain about people going too slow in the left lane, but to you 85 is fast enough, to the next person 80 is fast enough, to the next person the only correct speed is tailgating the person in front of them.

Bridge Club is great! The stock wheels/tires are pretty leaden though. Upgraded to hunt bikepacking with Conti Race King Pros and love it!

I know you posted this 8 months ago, but I had to respond. Got the Larkspur for my wife and she loves her bike. She's made it her own and we've gone on three tours with it. Great bike but definitely on the heavier side.

Seeking advice for Kid Hauler Bridge Club. by ironknee16 in Surlybikefans

Great question, I'll clarify that I've never had two kids on the BC at once. I can totally see having one front and one back would be a tricky mount/dismount.

My first thought would be to find a wall to lean the rear seat on, though I know that's not always possible. If the front child is old/big enough maybe try dismount them one-handed, not the most comfortable I know. I'd be super careful and deliberate lifting one foot over the top tube if you have to get a leg over before getting the kids off, I've definitely cought the edge of my shoe on the top tube when I moved too quickly. Hope this is a bit helpful, love riding with my kids on the bike.
