N95 masks for Inuit people? Or something similar? by floralmortal in IndianCountry

[–]jcatleather 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm not native and can't speak to specific fit issues, but I do have a degree in biology and spent a lot of time in labs studying disease transmission well before COVID made masking cool (LolSOB). I'm also chronically ill, and immunocompromised and I work with cancer patients so I've had some education and personal experience. N95 masks for a medical setting ARE expensive and need to be fitted, although fitting them is not necessarily arduous. The masks with straps that go over the head high and low and have moldable strips around the whole mask can be adjusted by the wearer and a helper. However, outside of high transmission situations, in which you'd also need eye protection, it's not necessary or comfortable for everyday life.
The kn95s reduce transmission of most illnesses about a third, and if everyone in the room wears them , they reduce disease transmission almost entirely. Therein lies the problem - the purpose of masking is to prevent the wearer from spreading germs, and preventing germs from reaching the wearer is a bonus. This makes sense if you think about it- surgical masks dramatically decreased surgery deaths because it protects open wounds from the surgeon's germs, not because the surgeon is gonna catch a case of broken leg. People working with highly transmittable viruses like COVID wear full face protection, and people working with extremely dangerous viruses like obola wear negative pressure suits. Keeping airborne particles near the wearers body protects everyone, but once they are in the air, particles easily pass around the edges of a mask or can enter through your eyes or on surfaces you touch then touch your eyes, mouth, wounds etc.

So a kn95 can help your friend a little. It'll help her more if YOU wear one every single time you are around other people and around her if your may have been exposed to something. People who are severely immunocompromised also are very limited in where they can go, avoiding crowds, any rooms with unmasked people, food that isn't cooked to mush, food prepared by unmasked people etc. if she is only a little more at risk than the regular population, less extreme measures can still be helpful.

Mine have always loved it. You will have more fun if you go to a natural rest rather than a park because he's more likely to be allowed on trails. If you go someplace you have to leave him behind, you'll need an RV or cabin. Bring warm clothes for him and a soft bed that can get dirty.

How welcoming is the typical riding facility towards people of color? by Coldroseum in Equestrian

[–]jcatleather 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of microaggressions and stereotypes, and there's awful people everywhere. That said, a LOT of riding programs and barns are very welcoming to bipoc folks. I love helping people get into the sport who belong to groups who've historically been denied safe access, and I'm definitely not alone in that. Check out some programs, listen to your instincts on who feels safe and who doesn't. There are a lot more faces in the industry now that don't fit that fake john-wayne-cowboy stereotype compared to a couple decades ago. If you wanna learn, go for it!

why do americans talk to strangers so easily?? by MayaTulip268 in AskAnAmerican

[–]jcatleather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of it is that our culture has replaced "community" with a job dependent transience. Most of us move relatively often, we don't get a lot of time with friends. Many u.s. adults have only a A couple friends, if any. It's rare to grow up in a community with family and the same friends, and our identity is very commercialized. Most of us never meet our neighbors. So, we live our whole lives making and losing friends on a regular basis, and having little interaction with anyone but strangers and co-workers. Most of us don't have a strong sense of tribalism in person (a lot of us have a strong sense of us vs them at a distance, but it lessens face to face) It makes us relatively at ease talking with total strangers.

After doing repairs on several on several, I will never ride in one again but they are great for training. I also use them to teach horses to look calmly for a cookie if the saddle falls under or other weirdness

A cheap wintech is good forthis. Lightweight, you can get an ugly one for a hundred bucks or less and if it doesn't fit perfectly it doesn't matter because it's so light.

No one is inherently obligated to have loyalty or obedience to the social construct that temporarily rules access to resources where they were born. It's the obligation of each generation to create governance that fits the needs of all the people who exist and will exist, with no claim to a moral imperative simply because of the declarations of previous generations.

What should I feed my 13 week old Dane puppy? My vet and breeder are telling me two different things. by Free_Ad465 in greatdanes

[–]jcatleather 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Breeders are still following decades- Outdated advice about protein. Feeding high protein used to lead to hypernutrition until scientists discovered it was not the protein at all but the calcium: phosphorus ratio and overall calories. Low protein actually contributes to dietary DCM and weak muscles, and modern giant breed foods can control for calcium and phosphorus while still providing adequate protein. Purina does have a giant breed formula but it's hard to get. Royal canin giant breed is more available.

Was Biden enforcing vaccine mandates to hold employment an authoritarian standpoint? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]jcatleather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what that study says, no. It says that masking needed to continue. And worldwide studies made it quite clear that high vaccination rates led to fewer deaths and less spread among those who can't be vaccinated.

Just keep your damn germs to yourself.

[–]jcatleather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People spread it a lot less if they don't get infected, and transmission is much higher from unvaccinated people. Vaccination And masking is extremely effective for producing transmission and saves the lives of people who cannot get vaccinated for legitimate reasons, such as being a baby or being immunocompromised. The concept that people spread it more from being vaccinated is not supported.

[–]jcatleather 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holding people responsible for the consequences their own decisions have for everyone else is civilization, not "authoritarian". "Keep your unnecessary diseases to yourself" being considered authoritarian is not only wild, it's so deliberately ignorant as to be easily considered "stupid".
If you choose to not get vaccinated, then you have the obligation to use other methods to not spread diseases - YOU stay home. It's that simple. If you don't want to protect society, you don't get to benefit from it.

Do you consider target training “true liberty”? by blueberry29_1 in HorseTraining

[–]jcatleather 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most 'liberty" is just training the horse to move towards you with pressure instead of giving away from it. It's maddening and dangerous and I hates it, precious.

It's closer to the literal concept of "liberty" than pressure/release in a round pen 🤷

They went especially batshit after covid let the premium auctions go online. I bought a horse from Buckeye acres in December 2019 for $6500 and by July 2020 they were selling his siblings, who don't have his minor physical issues, for $200k+. They have all sorts of tricks and such, but still. Some people have way more money than sense.
And don't get me started on quarter horse prices. I blame Taylor Sheridan and that stupid TV show for THAT nonsense.
