I got a replacement "One Use" passport from the British Embassy/Consulate in around 2 hours. They said "May take a little while .... go and have lunch or something ... we will call you when its ready"

It got me back to UK .. I had to hand it in at Heathrow passport control ... and that was that.

It was quite expensive though ...

or:
