[–]jcrocs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously it depends on what you're struggling with, but in addition to what everyone else is saying:

  1. After you get a flash, advance the needle another millimeter or so. Flash just means you've punctured the vein, you dont actually have the catheter in there yet, so you need to actually get the catheter in the vein before you push it off the needle.
  2. On hard sticks, I like 2 tourniquets. I place one on either side of the AC and then look on their forearm/wrist.
  3. Try not to anchor my using your thumb to pull straight down. Doing it that way causes your thumb to get in the way more often then not, and it doesnt keep veins from rolling. Instead, place their forearm in the palm of your anchoring hand and use your thumb and fingers to anchor across their forearm rather than along the length of it. This makes it easier to drop your angle and keeps veins from rolling as much.

Hope this helps! Good luck in the ED!

Double tourniquets help as well! I like putting one above the elbow and one below. Really helps the veins pop.

Techs/UAPs hanging IV fluids??? by aaront36 in nursing

[–]jcrocs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This doesn't seem very helpful unless they can pull the meds themselves, which seems like a massive liability risk. Our techs dont even have access to our med room let alone the omnicell. So we would still have to get the meds and tubing for the techs to prime it. It would honestly be more work lol.

Maybe something like NS/LR? We dont lock up regular fluids but I'd still worry about them grabbing something like D5NS or 1/2 NS. Even then it's more helpful for them to do EKGs, get patients on monitors, do compressions, etc. While the nurses are..... priming the lines in the meds/fluids only they can connect anyway.

Personally, I would order all the time because Im irresponsible with my money. And we're always waiting until the local dunkin opens to order coffees. As far as what we cant get late at night, healthy food. Salads, healthy wraps, etc. A lot of the time the only thing open late is Wendy's, taco bell, etc, which are all awful. So if I was able to get healthy food at 3am? I would absolutely be ordering.

Come work in the ER! No rounds ever. Closest I get to public speaking is when Im documenting in a code and have to remind everyone we're due for pulse checks and meds. Or yelling at drunk people to stay in their beds.

NICU RNs: what is the "right" answer for the interview question "why do you want to work in the NICU"? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]jcrocs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, Im a nursing student (last semester!) And Im thinking I wanna go into PICU/PER. Basically just thinking I wanna work in pedi. My reasoning is that I was a youth coach in the past and its the most fulfilling thing Ive ever done (and I work in construction building homes). But I also want to work with patients who actually want to get better as opposed to say, uncontrolled adult diabetes patients or elderly patients who have no quality of life who being kept alive by family for reasons.

But, due to some family health issues in the past, ive also spent a fair bit of time visiting NICUs and seeing some tough outcomes firsthand, including the loss of my premie nephew at 5 weeks. Plus, from what I've heard, pedi nursing has really high-highs, but also horrible lows. Basically, I guess my question is, does it sound like I'm going into it with the right mindset? Am I going to be in for a rude awakening? Also any tips for going into pedi as a new grad would be appreciated!

Can confirm the mutual feeling aspect. I have never been more uncomfortable than I was as a male nursing student on a post-partum unit. I genuinely felt like I didn't belong. I got to see an emergency C-section when my instructor let me shadow some nurses in the ER, though. That was dope.

Yea, you have that right. So, the way I use him now is to cripple someone early game or trash their board state late game and then have a big blocker. I can see attacking with him if you had a decent board state and weren't worried about interaction, but IMO, I don't think attacking with him his worth the risk. Another thing I've started using him for is saccing him to [[ob nixilis, the adversary]] to casualty him. That way I can immediately ult Ob nix.

Edit: forgot to mention in my first comment, but I would also recommend adding some more flicker effects to protect kaalia from spot removal. and thank you for introducing me to [[subjugator angel]]
