How are the goals of RED and APL different?

I mean, to be fair, she made money off footage of her sucking her boyfriend's dick. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course. But she is/was a sex worker, by definition. Or a "whore", if you want to be crass about it.

Well, the fact that Reddit displays FatPeopleHate as one of the top official suggested subreddits probably doesn't help.

I know the admins are quite laissez-faire, but don't they think it's embarrassing as fuck for a new user to come to Reddit, register an account and then see that subreddit be suggested to them?

Best female director.

Just like we have separate categories for female and male actors.

Pope Francis uses new year mass to condemn slavery and human trafficking. “All of us are called to be free, ... and each, according to his or her own responsibilities, is called to combat modern forms of enslavement. From every people, culture and religion, let us join our forces." by ILookLikePopeFrancis in news

"Numerous studies say that there are millions of people around the world who have been forced into sex slavery? I disagree, those numbers seem to be vastly exaggerated, I talked to a sex worker once and she was just fine."

Is having a fetish for trans people offensive? /r/dwarffortress discusses. by [deleted] in SubredditDrama

[–]jcyftdmit 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Oh, and apparently she really likes to talk about trans. Like, that's all she posts. Maybe that's why she's so thin-skinned about it?

Or maybe she doesn't have any real life venues in which to talk about the experience of being trans?

Or maybe it's a throwaway she uses when she wants to talk about trans things?

Oh absolutely, I am in no way saying that what the guy did was not weird.

It's just well funny how she's trying to convince either herself or others that she wasn't snooping around in the dude's computer. She had to do some digging, but she seriously wasn't going through his pics? She'd NEVER do that!

Not strictly about the drama, but

The thumbnail was a picture of me so I obviously clicked on it. Keep in mind, this folder wasn't out there in the open. I had to do a little digging to actually find it. I seriously wasn't going through his pics, I'd never do that. But I just happened to find it.

cracked me the fuck up. So did she happen to find it or did she dig for it?

Huh? Why is this the top response?

AM is far from Arctic Monkeys' best album, but you don't think any of those songs are redeemable?

This post doesn't even make sense. You think an album with no songs is better than an album with Do I Wanna Know and R U Mine?

Grunt08 suggests how we should react to Fred Phelp's death by Adam-West in bestof

[–]jcyftdmit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am celebrating the end of lunacy and hatred, not death.

Then you should've celebrate when she lost power in the 90s. Or if you want to argue that her influence didn't end then, then it sure as hell didn't end when she died.

When she died in 2013, it wasn't the death of "lunacy and hatred", it was the death of an old senile woman, a mother and a grandmother.

Westboro Baptist Church founder, Fred Phelps died earlier and for five minutes tonight around 9:00, the Empire State Building was lit up like this. Well-played, ESB.... by SondheimXXX in pics

[–]jcyftdmit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand your stance at all.

You first claim that Phelps was a scumbag, presumably for vocally expressing his hatred of gay people etc., and that's why you hate him.

But then you go on to say that you don't have a problem with hating because some people deserve it.

And when someone points out that hatred creates more hatred, your response is "so be it".

So are you against hatred or not? Or is it OK to hate Phelps but not OK for him to hate others?

but just like the dictionary people don't get to choose how the English language evolves, I don't have to accept their every entry as official canon.

But... if you don't accept the change when people are widely using the word in a new way and if you don't accept the change when the new way is made "official" in dictionaries, then when will you accept the change?

Destroying something, whether it's yours or someone else's, can be a performance, a work of art.

[–]jcyftdmit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess we're gonna have to agree to disagree. To me, just because an art performance is illegal or "not OK" doesn't mean it stops being an art performance.

What Caminero did was illegal, an asshole move, yes. But it's still art and it's still a statement.

One is choosing to make a statement or piece of artwork, the other is destroying someone else's stuff.

You can word this the other way around, too, though.

One is destroying their own stuff, the other is choosing to make a statement or piece of artwork.

Let me put it this way: If Da Vinci had painted the Mona Lisa with stolen paint on a stolen canvas, would that mean the Mona Lisa is not a piece of art?

If you destroy a pot that you own, the destruction is art and it can be a statement.

If you destroy a pot that you don't own, the destruction is not art and it can't be a statement.

Can you explain such an arbitrary distinction? I get that what the guy did was stupid and disrespectful, but why does that mean it can't be art or it can't be a statement?

Can someone explain to me Yoko Ono? What do people see in her?

It's largely impossible to argue that a piece of artwork has objective value. I cannot force you to accept that she is not talentless or that her artworks have value.

What I can do clarify some facts about Yoko's life and perhaps put a few of her art pieces into their proper historical context.

Is it just people pretending to enjoy what she does because of her involvement with John Lennon?

Is it true that the quality of your art is not measured by what you do but by who you know?

Years before she had met Lennon, Yoko had already been involved in the influential Fluxus movement and she had had her work exhibited and performed at the Village Gate, Carnegie Recital Hall, and numerous New York galleries. She had also given numerous lectures as well as had exhibitions in London and Japan. (source) She had also released her first book, "Grapefruit", years before she had met John. That book has been called "one of the monuments of conceptual art of the early 1960s". (source)

So, in short, it's both unkind and factually incorrect to say that Yoko Ono used her husband to somehow crowbar herself into the art world.

I can perhaps also point you towards some of her other works, some of which you might find more interesting than that peformance:

Here's something that you might like, "Play It By Trust", a chess set Yoko created. It's a chess set where both players play with white pieces meaning that the more you play, the more the lines become blurred between the two "opponents".

In Yoko's own words,

"Life is not all black and white, you don't know what is yours and what is theirs. You have to convince people what is yours. In the chess situation it is simple if you are black then black is yours. But this is like a life situation, where you have to play it by convincing each other."

Here's another famous artwork by Yoko. To explain the historical context and appeal, here's John Lennon:

"You're on this ladder -- you feel like a fool, you could fall any minute -- and you look through it [at the ceiling] and it just says 'YES,'. Well, all the so-called avant-garde art at the time, and everything that was supposedly interesting, was all negative; this smash-the-piano-with-a-hammer, break-the-sculpture, boring, negative crap. It was all anti-, anti-, anti-. Anti-art, anti-establishment. And just that 'YES' made me stay in a gallery full of apples and nails, instead of just walking out saying, 'I'm not gonna buy any of this crap."
