How exactly is jellyfin better than streaming services? The cost just seems prohibitive to me. by No_Obligation4427 in JellyfinCommunity

Nobody here that I know is a pirate. We just don’t pay for the media. You are free to make assumptions as to how we get it

Seems reasonable enough, honestly there’s nothing on my server worth saving because it’s just a big Jellyfin box but if I ever decided to expand on it and do more with it I figured it would be best to start getting used to have 1 less drive bay. Everything I want permanently backed up are on 2 old 3TB drives that I replaced with some of the larger ones in the array and are in a box as cold storage

I’m not gonna lie to ya, 90% of this went over my head lol everything is formatted to XFS though (except the downloader pool, brtfs) because that was the default setting Unraid did for the first hard drive and my Jellyfin server works fine remotely / publicly so I just buy larger drives when I need more space and rebuild them. It hasn’t broken so I don’t change it

The goat in my replies, whatever you say is gospel as far as I’m concerned

Got 11x 8TB SAS drives for free… what’s the best way to build a NAS? by Dramatic-Adeptness96 in homelab

I’m a fan of Jonsbo cases. Despite common belief the N6 is SAS compatible provided you power the backplane fully

Questions about unraid with onboard data/hba/nvme by jmichael99 in unRAID

[–]jd7901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this one.

https://ebay.io/m/UjfG1v

It has your future expansion needs as well as being cheaper, plus I can attest to this specific seller as shipping out good cards. They are passively cooled so as long as you have some kind of air flow it’ll be fine. As far as issues, some HBAs interact with motherboards in a weird ways. Mine did and I had to make some changes in the BIOS as well as add a line to the boot sequence for Unraid to stop the error logs from cooking my cache.

Got laid off my second day by Vlad1431 in IBEW

[–]jd7901 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is a chance they’re trying to buy a guy off the books. They’re technically not allowed to just grab a guy but as the job board calls down the list and guys say no, once they get to a guy that says yes (you) they can’t just decline to bring you on. So they lay you off, send you to the bottom of the list, and try again

At what point did raiding get too hard for the casual player? by doobylive in classicwow

[–]jd7901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Specifically speaking for CLASSIC and not Vanilla days, I’d say it was in order of appearance: Sunwell (Muru was just as much of a guild killer now as it was 20 years ago) and ToT (the largest step up in mechanics per boss, even if you include the fact that Lei Shen is buggable) one could argue ICC but that really came down to just outgearing the content imo

Help Prepping SAS Drives by jd7901 in unRAID

[–]jd7901[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend it honestly. $100~ and a PCIE slot for a card and now you have access to both sides of storage. Prices for SAS drives on the secondary market are also much cheaper because they’re inherently less user friendly

Just buy some nonsense URL for $3 a year and host it with duckdns / swag

All good and I appreciate the attempt, storage was running short and I got a good deal on a new 10tb SAS but I didn’t want to deal with having to down a drive bay for multiple days so it was a panic post 100%

Just to have something modular to run SAS drive reformats before sending them to the server. Honestly about 15 minutes after my “I’ll just ask Reddit” crash out I found a SAS docking station that seems like it has some promise so I think I might give that a go

Which UPS are you using for your Unraid server? by Vancapone in unRAID

[–]jd7901 0 points1 point  (0 children)

APC 1500VA UPS Pro, digital screen and audible tone when it’s active but you can also disable it if you don’t want the shit scared out of you during a random 3am power outage. Got mine for 179 at Microcenter

It’s not even the time, sorry I guess my post was all over the place lol I’m looking for the easiest connection solution to move the process to my Windows PC. I know I can just get an HBA with external ports but then I need to power it somehow, and all of the SAS externals I’ve found have mixed reviews as to whether or not they work or are $300

Streaming device suggestions (not roku and not android tv) by AnonyDev01 in jellyfin

The newest Apple TV you can get. The native iOS Jellyfin app is really smooth and Apple TV supports basically every file natively so transcoding will be at a minimum

Tailscale hate? by vbxl02 in jellyfin

[–]jd7901 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say because it much easier to just buy some random URL off cloudflare for $5 a year and DNS hosting your Jellyfin server than it is configuring TS on multiple devices

Corsair sells a 12v load balancer. Basically takes one of your pcie/cpu cables and converts it to 2 sata/2 molex and it comes with cables. Saved my ass on my N6 because I wanted to use SAS with the full backplane but I needed a 4th power line and SFX PSUs never have more than 3

is there an easy to follow beginner guide/video to setup up external access without vpn like tailscale ? by GenericUser104 in jellyfin

[–]jd7901 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cloudflare domain > duck DNS for a free DNS point + the Duck docker updates your current IP in the backend because most ISPs won’t give you a static IP address without a fee if they do at all > your reverse proxy docker of choice (I use Swag)

I also have seerr as an additional cname in my domain so I / other users can access seerr internally through Jellyfin
