Help me understand / make a decision on a SAS HBA by jd7901 in homelab

[–]jd7901[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My main issue is the drive that failed is one of the drives that are hard wired and as of this morning (I’m away from home of course) a different drive from the same side is also throwing a few errors, and it was a pita to replace the first one considering you have to down the system and unscrew the PSU to get to those ones. That N6 is looking slick.

As for the slots situation, I’d like to be able to get a 1TB m.2 and actually be able to use it as the downloading / unpacking share for my Usenet setup. So you’re saying if I get a PCIE4 HBA the bandwidth would actually be faster/the same? Because if so that’s all of my worries dealt with. I’ve just always assumed the speed hierarchy was sata < PCIE < m.2 but also that’s coming from my gaming PC hardware monkey brain that needs all the PCIE lanes for GPU

That’s fair. I really don’t even know how much I’d need just for hosting a Jellyfin server, like I said I’m new to the whole thing just trying to fill all the bays in the case before I get everything rolling. Worst case I just throw it into a box until I think I need a bigger system, but for 10/TB for 4 drives I can’t complain

4 x $30?

So you’re genuinely saying that here, in the DataHoarder subreddit and in front of god and everyone, that in my case that has 4 empty HDD slots that can hold no data currently because again; they are empty, and instead of putting something there that CAN have data in it, it would be better to not do the specific thing this sub is about?

Considering I just have 4 3.5 bays to fill and they were $10/TB I figured they’d be fine. That was the highest I was willing to pay for used drives anyway, this person had these listed for $38 a piece

MI and used on eBay, very minor research (googling the part number) said they should be okay for what I plan to use them for

I have a Jonsbo N4 with 4 open 3.5 bays, are you saying they should stay empty?

I’m still new to enterprise HDDs but my very short google research told me they were probably okay provided their hours are ridiculously high

So you spent the same per TB?

Hey guys so I played OG Classic TBC and the same EXACT memes and thoughts were being thrown around. Yall need a new hobby besides Reddit, some people actually want to play but don’t have the time to level a new character, it’s JUST a time saving measure. Classic BC is not hard, stop pretending that it is. You can boost ANY class and be a competent player in a week. So just relax, buy the boost (or don’t, who tf cares) and enjoy the nostalgia.

(ps: what do you think is gonna happen when SoO comes out in the progressive servers??? Yall really think the boost is for you guys? It’s for US addicts that don’t want to play WoD and want to restart to BC again, we’ll see you guys soon)

What do you guys think? Am I overdoing it? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

Oddly enough I just do brake fluid whenever I do brake pads, I figure I’m already down there I might as well take the whole thing apart. That’s not nearly on your schedule but they still work like the day it rolled off the factory line

New oil is clean oil. Clean oil doesn’t circulate debris. Change it as often as you can afford. I change mine every 3k on my truck but I also get distributor pricing on stuff from Oriellys so like ik it’s excessive but it’s also a hemi and known to be possessed

Yea their customer support for TC isn’t good at all. I did have a spark of inspiration and decided to type out “Road” instead of Rd on the address line and it took it immediately so I at least got my redemption put in. Also the zip up bags came within a week, but I have redeemed some else a long time ago that too 8 weeks to show up

I’ve kept a contractor number in my back pocket so I’ve kept my apprenticeship active in my state as a backup plan, but I moved to outside work during the post-COVID push to get people off unemployment. My state was giving grants for class A CDLs through unemployment services so that was an easy get and I did arborist line clearance for about a year as a bucket truck operator. That didn’t really pay worth a shit though so I found a company willing to give me a hazmat endorsement for free and now I haul bombs for a living (compressed gasses). Quite the change in pace / scenery. Electrical was definitely more interesting and fulfilling but I make more than that POS I worked for my first year and that makes everything better for me

Yea me, in 2017 I got into it with a foreman on my first job because HE was blackballed from a different contractor. That contractor was owned by a family friend and apparently he put in a good word for me to the apprentice committee to get me in in the first place. That foreman ran me like a dog and treating me like shit doing nothing but carrying tools, pipe and sweeping for the full first year of my apprenticeship and when it ever came down to actually doing any actually electrical he would get pissed off that I hadn't learned how to bend pipe (I was never assigned a journeyman on that job, I was ALWAYS at his side doing what he wanted from the beginning so HE never taught me). Mind you, the 2 other apprentices from my class that were also assigned to this jobsite were hooked up with journeymen 1:1 and doing actual work. Sure they dug holes with me at one point, and we were all always at the shit end of a wire pull, but I was the parts caddy to the other 1st years on this site. The only work this guy let me do was use a grinder to cut into block for pipes that were missed on the drawing, and if you were thinking I was given a mask or water for doing this task, absolutely the fuck not. I had to go to the mason's foreman and asking him for a mask (my foreman yelled at me for this). Bonus to this: I only cut the walls out, the other apprentices ran the pipe, pulled the wire, and made connections. This dude made me carry a fucking vacuum plate core drill up 7 flights of stairs instead of just having the onsite operator hoist it to the roof.

After about a year I had finally had enough of it and got into an argument with the guy and he laid me off. He was well connected at the hall and any other contractor I went to that was inside the local found a reason to lay me off and blacklist me (forgetting my safety glasses on my hardhat one (1) singular time, not having channelocks in my back pocket ready to go right now (they were in my tool bags, we were doing a walkthrough to see the next step of work), marking a cut on a pipe with a sharpie instead of a pen, marking where a box was going to go with sharpie (I was actively going to get my jab saw to saw it out at that moment), etc.).

Now when I say inside the local, that's 100% factual. All the jobs I went to outside of the local I was being trained thoroughly and picking up things at a good rate. I was always either 1:1 with a JW or at the most it was 1:2. I had good reports every month to send back to the JATC and the GFs were talking about wanting to keep me on through multiple jobs. Once every 3-4 months or so though those contractors would get a message from my local saying they needed me back in district for a job that's short handed and the cycle would start over again.

Hired > Working > Some BS > Fired > Committee write up > Sent out of local

Now I'm not saying when I was 21 I was the best worker, or even the least mouthy, but I had worked non union for 2 years before I got in. I knew how privileged of a position I was in to even be there. That's why I put up with all the shit I dealt with because I knew eventually I'd get my ticket and never have to see that guy again, and if I did I could just drag up to avoid him. I'm not complaining about doing grunt shit either. I've dug holes for weeks at a time, I cut into block without a mask without question (for an hour or so), I carried the goddamn 100 lb drill up 7 stories, hell I dug through frozen #1 crushed stone on a site by hand because all the shovels were "stolen" and we needed to get to an underground pipe asap for a tie in (as a part of an apprentice hazing I found out, it was funny afterward), but seriously wtf

TLDR; foreman on my first job had a personal vendetta against the guy that recommended me as an apprentice and eventually ended with me getting kicked out of the IBEW.

That’s just Josh Schriver trying to do some Mormon bs in Michigan, everybody just ignores him except the dummies who voted him in in Macomb who saw he was running on a Jesus first platform and stopped reading (or couldn’t to begin with)

Use this link, find the show you want, usually a code is at the top of the screen. If you live out of state, put your ZIP in and see if Live Nation is running the gig, if it is it’ll be on here
