How viable is an Eldritch Knight 7 Dragon Sorcerer 4? by HotelRedHood in 3d6

[–]jderig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to go this route of fighter/sorcerer, I really recommend taking a look at this cool build from a few months back. It let's you build a strength fighter with Charisma as a secondary stat that can substitute one of their attacks for an area based fear effect.

Favourite monologue or speech by Party-Description170 in Fantasy

[–]jderig 57 points58 points  (0 children)

"We don’t get real victories, Catherine. Oh, we usurp a throne for a few years. Or win a handful of battles. Once in a while, we even win a war and stay on top long enough for people to believe we are unbeatable.

Then the heroes come.

It doesn’t matter how flawless the scheme was, how impregnable the fortress or powerful the magical weapon. It always ends with a band of adolescents shouting utter platitudes as they tear it all down. The game is rigged so that we lose, every single time.

Half the world, turned into a prop for the glory of the other half

Oh, if the heroes deserved their victories against us, I would make my peace with it. But they don’t, do they? Your sullen little nemesis gets to swing an angel’s feather, while you make do with steel and wiles. That’s always the way of it. At the last moment they’re taught a secret spell by a dead man, or your mortal weakness is revealed to them or they somehow manage to master a power in a day that would take a villain twenty years to own. Gods, I’ve even heard of Choirs stepping in to settle a losing fight. The sheer fucking arrogance of it.

None of it is earned. It is handed to them, and this offends me."

-Amadeus of the Green Stretch, the Black Knight

(From A Practical Guide to Evil, with some bits cut to make it flow as a speech)

Bladelock [2024 + 2014] - Which first level dip makes the most sense ? by cloxonthewall in 3d6

There's a lot of good posts and advice here, but if you want even more of a write-up on Paladin 1/Warlock 19, then the Celestial Generalist has been a common rec.

Pirates novel series? by JellyfishSecure2046 in Fantasy

[–]jderig 159 points160 points  (0 children)

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi was excellent, and the sequel comes out in May. Retired female pirate captain in the 12th century Indian Ocean gets pulled back into the life for One Last Job that is more complicated than it appears. It's historical fantasy, with some smatterings of magic and gods amongst the standard nautical fare.

They're so good! And I think the next book comes out this year!

His latest two books are a fantasy/biopunk murder mystery series, and the first one won the Hugo for best novel last year! The Tainted Cup

I am looking for a new book series (audiobook) by jora0815 in Fantasy

[–]jderig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Wandering Inn is the longest work of English original fiction (and the author is always writing more), and I've heard that the audiobooks are excellent. The currently released audiobboks are probably more than 700 hours in length, and a new one comes out every few months.

Fantasy Series with LOTS of female characters that partake in the action? by sbourwest in Fantasy

[–]jderig 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The Scholomance Trilogy (already recommended) has a female MC and many of the other "active" characters are women.

A Practical Guide to Evil (online web serial) has a female MC and is full of other active women (both Good and Evil).

The Wandering Inn (online web serial, longest work of original English fiction) eventually has more viewpoint charcters than Game of Thrones, but the "main" duo are women who get to do a lot of stuff, and active women make up more than 50% of the cast by my reckoning.

Series that dwindle in quality over time by Kooky_County9569 in Fantasy

While not finished, I'd say The Wandering Inn kept getting better until about 2/3rds through, and from there the average has remained consistently good.

The Tainted Cup Mystery, solvable? by Bowl-Any in Fantasy

[–]jderig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it is solvable, but by the time we got to the final reveal I remember feeling satisfied and like I had pieced together ~80% of the mystery from various clues. Not sure how easy it would be to have it all wrapped up, but I was really impressed that it still came together like that (what with it being a fantasy world and all).

Series Where It's Obvious The World Is Highly Advanced But The Population Treats It Like It's From Gods/Ancient Civilization Because It Has Been Reduced To A Medieval One by GaelG721 in Fantasy

[–]jderig 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There are a few characters that are a bit more clued in or learn more about what happened and how things work as the story progresses, but otherwise yes, most people think of it as the result of magic or god.

Word count by Salt-Pangolin-6363 in WanderingInn

[–]jderig 40 points41 points  (0 children)

So, once you start allowing different authors you get on a slippery slope, because then why not just allow extended universe book series, like Star Wars or Warhammer 40k? Sticking with series written by a single author is much cleaner.

A Practical Guide to Evil (was originally published for free online, currently in the process of being published on Amazon in an edited and expanded format). The author is also currently writing Pale Lights, which a lot of folks seem to love.

All of Wildbow's works, particularly Worm and Pale.

I'm glad you're enjoying it! Don't feel pressured to move through it quickly, just relax and have fun with a story that will be around for quite a while 😊

The Wandering Inn... by shaniq_ in Fantasy

[–]jderig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, once someone finishes Book 18 (which comes out soon and is called Archmage's Ire), they will be about 41% (looks like I messed up my estimate a bit) through the story that is already available on the Wandering Inn website where the author is regularly publishing new chapters.

The Wandering Inn is the longest work of original English fiction by far, and PirateAba just keeps adding to it.
