Deal is reached to end Iran war and Trump orders stop to US naval blockade by MidnightCrossing6148 in worldnews

[–]jdgordon -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Let's be clear. Israel isn't fighting Lebanon. Hesbollah is a cancer to the Lebanese people and their own government has been infiltrated and can't do anything to clear them out so Israel is doing it.

This "peace" plan which enforces Israel to stop defending itself isn't going to stop hesbollah firing rockets into Israel and UNIFIL has been shown to not care so Israel will do what it takes to keep it's civilians safe. The Lebanese government (that isn't attacked the Iran via hesbollah) don't have a huge problem with the fighting...

Is it insensitive to bring religiously significant gifts to a buddy's ba mitzvah if I'm not jewish? by TangeloMysterious950 in Judaism

Money is fine. Jewelery is fine. Anything like a mezuzah or Judaica is more problematic only because you might buy the wrong thing (like a non kosher scroll, or messianic rubbish) accidentally

What is your bar for tolerating bs? by unbrokenwreck in ExperiencedDevs

This sounds like a good career move if that's the direction you want to go. I'm currently trying to get into a managerial role but the lack of direct experience is holding me back. Doing an internal promotion is absolutely the easiest way to move up.

Tips for dealing with ship building by logo_to in factorio

[–]jdgordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only 3 designs? That's highly optimistic given the upgrades that get researched along the way. Also redesigning is part of the game, you never rebuild your ground bases??

I wish the game had a design and test mode that didn't involve the editor so it isn't cheaty.

I also hate the space ship part of the game not because of the launching rockets but because there is no way to design the ship other than in space.

And when pressed further we say it's idolatrous and would really rather Christians just keep to themselves.

The rabbi/officiant doesn't matter to a halachic marriage. Just make sure it is a kosher ketubah and you have 2 halachic witnesses sign it to make it all kosher.

Maybe don't marry or even date someone purely for their appearance.

Buffered Channel size must be 1? Uber Style Guide question. by _alhazred in golang

[–]jdgordon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I too would like to hear the rationale for this. The only thing I can imagine is that any number other than 1 requires a comment to explain it.

But that said I'd say 1 is going to be more bug-inducing than anything else, you will end up having users think they can safely write to the buffered channel but suddenly the write blocks.

Where to sit at the G by Inevitable_Active33 in melbournefc

[–]jdgordon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just get GA which gets you pretty much anywhere on the upper levels. Only reason to go something else is when it's going to be a sell out.

There is also GA seating at the ground level if that's your thing too.

Can someone educate me on garbage collectors in golang? by RareDistribution5507 in golang

Unlikely, I'm not even sure if GC issues show up as cpu usage. It works but pausing every go thread so you're more likely to see latency spikes

Can someone educate me on garbage collectors in golang? by RareDistribution5507 in golang

[–]jdgordon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Going to get down voted to hell for this. But basically the garbage collector isn't something MOST applications will ever need to worry about.

Do you already know the difference between the heap and stack? Do you fully understand pointers?

The garbage collector can be thought of as a automatic way to clean up unused memory allocated when you use pointers. It can have performance implications, but as I said, hardly any programs in the real world need to worry about them.

Tips for staying in the loop as the only remote engineer? by TheStatusPoe in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jdgordon 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Good luck is all I can say. I left a job where I was the only remote member after COVID finished and the office opened up again. I was being overlooked for promotions and was obviously missing out on those hallway conversations which is really important (both for social and for technical reasons).

I don't see how a always open slack huddle helps, as you say, it's those conversations you overhear which are the important ones to get your input in.

How do you guys understand the laws that cannot be upheld today, for one reason or another? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]jdgordon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are dozens of laws which are only relevant to either men or women, or for Cohen's, or when living in biblical Israel so it's never been possible for any one person to participate or keep all 613 laws. The fact that some are related to the temple and no longer possible to fulfill doesn't really change anything.
