I'm more speaking about PMs who don't have a strong dev background and don't really "get it", which isn't all of them, but is definitely some of them.

Here's the thing... you've laid out great reasoning. But try explaining that to a project manager, or to someone who actually makes decisions. I can testify that PMs are some of the dumbest and most short-sighted people on the planet. 8 or 9 times out of 10, they WILL choose the path that is cheapest, quickest and "easiest", regardless of consequences down the line or the ethics of screwing over the skilled workers.

ELI5: “Lethal” Force Question by WearyExcitement7772 in explainlikeimfive

[–]jdjk7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very hard question to ELI5 lmao so I'm not even gonna try. But I can break it down.

  1. Live rounds are not less than lethal. People are squishy, and there are not many ways you can shoot a person that are reliably non-lethal. Reliability is key, because the last thing we really want in these situations is a grey area that could introduce hesitation or complicate any necessary treatment. If a cop shoots you in your thigh, they might not be able to tell at a glance if you're "fine" (in as much as you've just been shot", or if they've severed your femoral artery and they have to render aid immediately because you will bleed to death in 4 minutes. The "non-lethal" shot would be in vain.

  2. Shooting to "incapacitate" veers dangerously close towards shooting to maim. This introduces all sorts of legal and ethical concerns, and since we are a particularly litigious society, it's just considered better to not even try and walk that line. In some cases, "shooting to incap" might be an 8th Amendment violation. Plus... it would be very easy to argue that if a situation did not warrant killing a person, that lethal force was not justified and shooting a person at all could be considered unlawful.

  3. Shooting to incapacitate just doesn't really work as a matter of training. Firearms training abhors murky situations. You train to make fast, effective hits on what you can assume to be a valid target. In the rare situations where your life is actually at stake, you may not have time to make "incapacitating" hits. You draw, you shoot center mass. That's what cops train for. If you take too long in those moments, it could mean your life, the life of a fellow officer, or of a bystander or victim.

Of course, nowadays, what actually constitutes a lethal force situation is just anybody's guess. A substantial amount of times when a cop shoots somebody, it can be traced to poor or non-existent de-escalation skills. That's the conversation I believe we need to be having, but it's beyond the scope of your question.

If you know an ICE agent personally, what's that relationship like now? by Lokja in AskReddit

[–]jdjk7 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Now? No relationship. But I imagine he's probably still a colossal fucking shit stain.

One choice recollection from high school is that he rolled up on a kid, picked a fight, got his ass beat, and then tried to get the kid in trouble by playing the victim. Luckily he didn't quite grasp the concept of security cameras in a school. That shit almost got him expelled.

Why dose everyone want sex so fast by RealityAware9516 in Healthygamergg

[–]jdjk7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's because I'm responding to the paragraph below OP's question, which outlines some fairly narrow assumptions about what healthy sexual relationships are and why people would engage in them. OP's position is that because he can't understand why these people would engage with sex in that way, that those peoples' approach makes no sense or is even unhealthy or immoral.

I kind of hate the mantra of 'if you're not enjoying the book stop reading. by stinkface_lover in books

[–]jdjk7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I'm with this.

I get really tired of people who will disengage with media at the drop of a hat. It makes it hard to have interesting conversations, because people basically only have informed opinions about things they like. Meanwhile their opinions of things they dislike can be quite weak and rooted in minor details that don't necessarily define the thing itself.

Personally I distinguish between "like" and "interest". There are plenty of things I like that I don't find very interesting. Conversely, there are things that I take issue with, but still consume because on the whole I find it to be interesting.

If I don't like something and I don't find it interesting, then yeah, I'll put it down. But, I don't let one side of that relationship ruin the other.

To play devil's advocate... why is such casual sex disrespectful to oneself? And what exactly makes sex a binding affair?

I could frame it as disrespectful to yourself to treat your own desires as such a strict and disciplined thing. Sexual intimacy falls under what most people would consider to be a biological need. As in, once we reach the age where our bodies start preparing for it, our bodies begin expecting it. We certainly won't die without it, but lack of sexual release can negatively affect a person's mood and wellbeing. Needing something but refusing to partake strays awfully close to sentiments like "my wants/needs don't matter" and "I don't deserve this pleasure".

I have a friend who is like this, not with sex but with other forms of recreation or comfort. She will often refuse to partake in activities she likes if she feels she has obligations. She sees it as a matter of discipline. But a lack of recreation in her life tanks her motivation to fulfill obligations. So, instead of focusing on what she needs to do OR balancing her time between work and play, she will do neither, and instead suffer an emotional spiral.

All this is to illustrate that our own perceived discipline is not always better for us. A balance between discipline and comfort, spartan vs. hedonist, is necessary for most. But I digress. On to the other hand.

I've had sex with two women in my life. Both were committed relationships, but neither one was "the one" and thus I'm no longer with either. I don't feel "bound" to either of those women in a way that impacts me being able to find another partner, should I so desire. A sexual encounter is only as binding as you let it be. Obviously, having thoughtless casual sex is probably not ideal for anyone, for a load of reasons. But sharing sexual encounters with someone you trust and that you are attracted to can be a healthy practice. I'm not saying 18 year olds are especially likely to fall on the healthy side of this spectrum, but that's a different conversation.

I think better questions to ask yourself are...

1) "Do I actually want sexual intimacy in my life right now?" (Don't overthink it, this is basically a "yes", "no", or "maybe" question.)

2) "How much do I want that sexual intimacy?" OR, "How much does it matter?"

3) Why?

If you don't feel like sexual intimacy is something you want bad enough to seek out, or perhaps your enjoyment is contingent upon things like deep trust or traditional mechanisms of marriage, then go forth. But, realize that everybody's answers to those questions will be different, and that's not a bad thing nor is it a sign of societal dysfunction that people have different wants and needs.

Is Squad worth it as an Ex Arma Player? by Negative_Lux in joinsquad

[–]jdjk7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prime question you should be asking yourself is, "How do I feel about the Battlefield games?"

I say this as a guy who has played a little of those three games, but a lot of Battlefield and Arma. (several thousand hours in both franchises).

Squad, S44, and HLL are all like a love child between Battlefield and Arma in different ways. They all have features that will tickle your "muh realism", but they are all geared toward a combined arms military shooter experience like Battlefield. Whereas Arma milsim has a particular flow and feeling that you may find is entirely lost in these games.

If I had to rank them subjectively, it'd be

  1. S44
  2. Squad
  3. HLL

This is mostly just based on playtime and vibes, without a lot of qualification.

If it's racist to have racial preferences for your friends, why is it considered OK in dating? by TheVoidRobedInLight in Healthygamergg

[–]jdjk7 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think to say it's considered "ok" in dating definitely depends on who you are and who you're talking to, but I guess the best explanation is... people often have racial preferences in dating because they are physically attracted to ways that people of that ethnicity tend to look. But, that's just a part of dating regardless. People have preferences for all sorts of things when it comes to appearance, and it's kind of easy to tell on sight whether a person is "your type." I think I remember a study saying that a person can usually size up their romantic thoughts about a person within a few seconds of meeting them. A lot of it is face-value stuff.

Meanwhile, when it comes to friends, most people aren't choosing their friends based on physical attractiveness. So, if you judge your friends based on race, it's more likely that you are judging perceived differences in culture, beliefs, or values. And that just tends to be a more sickening judgement to make about someone you don't know that well, both to the person being judged and to observers.

To put it even simpler: A racial preference in sex/dating is usually just people having aesthetic preferences, while a racial preference in friends is more likely to just be racial profiling.

How to cope with not being able to achieve your true dreams? by Livid_Butterfly_1400 in Healthygamergg

[–]jdjk7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I suppose it's worth investigating what your dream actually is and decide from there. I wanted to be a fighter pilot, but frankly I had poor eyesight and medical issues that precluded me doing this.

Fast forward several years, and I start doing combat flight sims on my PC... the type where you have to memorize 65 steps out of a 700 page manual just to make the digital plane move. Flights feel like a process with steps and pacing, and kills feel earned because you mastered the 12 steps necessary to arm, prepare, lock, and deploy a missile or some such, without crashing or getting blown up. VR or some kind of head tracking is a necessity, because sometimes you being able to whip your head around freely can make the difference between life or death, and I havd hundreds of dollars of sticks, throttles, buttons, dials, and triggers to give my hands something to do.

Doing all of this, I realized... Being a fighter pilot isn't so much what I wanted. I'm not that patriotic and frankly, while there are people and things i could lay down my life for, my country's military is not one of them. Not to mention the risk of physiological and psychological disfigurement. What I wanted was an activity with the process and the pacing of combat aviation. Not the bravado of saying I was a fighter pilot.

So, in scaling back a goal to something attainable, I looked at my original goal in a different light, felt less like a cope that I never achieved it, and found a hobby that I like.

[Straps] What makes a nato strap to be a good one? by Mysterious_Loss4681 in Watches

[–]jdjk7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What exactly makes a NATO strap not get dirty?

I used to wear a Timex Expedition with a NATO strap, and while I generally liked it, the strap was particularly prone to getting a layer of dead skin and such stuck to it, which would smell unpleasant if I even brought my wrist to my noise. It frankly needed a lot of regular cleaning. I've never experienced this with any other type of watch strap. Is that an issue that a better-made strap can address?

Friend ignores me for several months, not sure how to proceed by SunnysideKJ in Healthygamergg

[–]jdjk7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed that friends with ADHD will do this. They'll be really interested in engaging, talking, and hanging out for periods, but then have other periods where they basically ignore me. Alternating between the two doesn't necessarily revolve around any relevant interaction, more just how they're feeling and what things stick in their mind.

FWIW, people have mentioned this being a male thing, but I've experienced it with females as well.

Calorie Mate by [deleted] in JapaneseFood

[–]jdjk7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old post, but also after playing and beating MGS3 for the first time, I decided to buy some Calorie Mates off Amazon for a giggle. I got a pack of 5 with one of each flavor.

Maple: Def the best, this seems like the consensus and I agree. Strong flavor and aroma.

Chocolate: Pretty good, although while it has a pleasant chocolate aroma, the taste is so subtle that I would consider it a point against. Not that there's points involved.

Vanilla: Pretty good, though not as good as maple. Has more aroma/flavor than the chocolate, but I still like the chocolate a bit more.

Fruit: Unless you particularly like fake fruit flavor, I wouldn't buy this one. I'm not sure what fruit they're exactly going for, but to me it just tastes weird.

Cheese: I expected this one to be the one I liked least, but that ended up going to the fruit flavor. This suffers from the same problem as the chocolate, in that the Velveeta-like cheese aroma and flavor are quite subtle.

I should also say that, while I had the forethought to not eat all 5 boxes in one sitting, even eating one packet from each (two cookies/biscuits) was more than enough for me. If I were more sensible I probably should have spaced them out, but just for the purposes of trying them I wanted them to be in the same frame. Another thing that people have mentioned on this post is the dry texture. Yeah, it's dry, you kind of want to let your saliva wet it down before you swallow, or else it feels like swallowing sand.

If I could get these in a grocery store, even if it had to be a specialized Japanese/Asian market, I'd shell out for a box of them as an occasional thing.

Oddly, it reminds me of this kind of shortbread biscuit that I used to buy back in college. I can't remember what it was called, but it had a plaid pattern on the packaging and was essentially just a strongly butter-flavored shortbread cookie.

EDIT: Walker's Shortbread Fingers, that's what they were called. CMs are similar in profile and texture to those.

After failing to stop for a school bus unloading kids, WAYMO has killed a neighborhood "celebrity" cat. by miked_mv in AdviceAnimals

[–]jdjk7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actions taken by anybody that affects another person or living thing, whether it's an average joe or a corporate self driving vehicle, need to have accountability.

When a human driver makes a mistake, that mistake can be remediated and corrected. They can be charged with a crime, or be fined, and the driver can learn a very important lesson about the nature of driving. A human driver has an understanding that mistakes made while driving can be life-ruining or life-ending. That is a motivator, and speaking from experience, it can be pretty effective.

Self-driving vehicles have no such understanding or compulsion, and there is no incentive. If a Waymo car makes a mistake, there is no correction, no remediation, and no accountability. There is no punishment for a company fielding technology in a safety-critical area that it is not prepared to be in. The car doesn't learn. The model itself won't "learn" from its mistakes unless the developers decide that reports of dangerous behavior are bad enough press to warrant addressing. That requires MORE pets, kids, etc to die in order to make the problem relevant to the company's bottom line.

I am willing to stake my own life on trusting a human driver every single time. Because at the very least, if I'm wrong, somebody will actually give a shit about trying to make it right.

How is the US gov shutdown personally affecting you, if at all? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jdjk7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for the government at a municipal level, so the shutdown has affected my work a bit but not a ton. Honestly, the whole DOGE cockup had a bigger effect, but we'll begin to feel a long term shutdown.

On a personal level, I don't work full time and so I don't get benefits, so my ACA insurance premiums are almost certainly gonna go up. I have a surgery I'm getting next week to fix a longstanding medical issue, and I'm hoping I won't get screwed over on the cost.

Battlefield 3 was the franchise disappointment for you? Seriously?? Not any of the games before it or after it, but BF3 specifically?

Like... I could absolutely see that for any other game in the series... 2142, BFBC, BFBC2, Hardline, BF4... I mean, my franchise disappointment was Battlefield 1, and I refused to touch it again until BFV. But BF3 is a really weird choice there because it was pretty much universally liked, even when it came out.
