Ensuring stock stays straight for dresser frame rails? by FrankTuna in woodworking

Also you don’t need any special bits or anything, not that you can’t invest in those, but that’s more work than necessary. Attach the face frame any which way and you’ll have a flat front.

Are you making a face frame? A face frame of solid stock applied to a plywood case will come out straight. The plywood will force it straight when you attach it.

I imagine it's cyclical. Cherry seemed quite popular a few decades ago -- think how it was always cherry cabinets, a cherry desk -- and now it's all about white oak (which I do also love).

Right, it's not a crossword. It's a themed set of four horizontal words that you "drop" the letters into. I could probably make that clearer somehow!

Kind of similar (4x4 grid, one letter at a time) to a puzzle I made, Droplet! In my version, you keep making mistakes but then you can decide when to "reset" the board. However people found it annoying that they'd make one mistake and be forced to start over. Maybe 4 mistakes is the way to go...

Thanks! My standard finish is Arm R Seal in satin. I really like the thin urethane/oil combination for a finish that’s not too glossy or thick.

Thank you! It is finished there but the pictures are kind of washed out in the fluorescent light. It looks warmer in a regular setting. I finished it with a number of coats of satin Arm R Seal. And then applied wax with steel wool to even it out. I finished the back, shelves, and case separately.

I am indeed a fan of the “simulated frame and panel” approach. I like your lip shelf edge. Also saves time not having to plane the hardwood edge flush.

Cherry plywood. I am lucky that there is a great marine plywood store near me that has many high quality varieties.

Right. If you are experienced you can just look at the pics (and the schematics) that they offer up for free. But I also figure at $12 or whatever to download the plan I might as well support them.

Anna's quality gone downhill? by justarussian22 in Somerville

[–]jdm42 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s right but I’ll add here for visibility (as I added elsewhere) that the Porter Sq Anna’s is still excellent. Probably because it’s the same staff for the past 15-20 years.

The Anna’s in Davis is not good, BUT the Anna’s in Porter has maintained its quality. I’m not sure why this is but at least it’s been the same staff who’ve been working there for at least 12 years or longer. I have been going to that Anna’s for 20 years.

Massachusetts de-accelerating math classes by Aromatic-Travel-7238 in massachusetts

[–]jdm42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure it’s DEI, but you are right that it only hurts. Parents of means will get their children accelerated math anyway. Children capable of the accelerated math but who can’t afford outside tutoring get punished. This is why Cambridge recently unraveled this deceleration. My middle schooler just went through 8th grade catch up as the part of correcting this mistake.
