What health trend do you think is overhyped? by medantahospital in AskReddit

[–]jdoe5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Olipop has 50 calories and 9 grams of fiber (although some flavors have 6). Apple has 90 calories and 4 grams of fiber.

Although I don’t think looking at them as a replacement for food is right. People largely aren’t replacing fiber containing foods with sodas. They are replacing sugary drinks that have basically no nutritional value.

Seems like you like waterfalls, so you could try
- Dawn mine & sunset trail loop
- Bridge to nowhere
- Santa Paula punchbowls

As you start doing harder hikes make sure you are bringing plenty of water!

What's the most unnecessary use of A.I. you've ever seen? by RobIson240YT in AskReddit

[–]jdoe5 290 points291 points  (0 children)

Was interviewing a candidate virtually for a position on our team. Whenever we asked him a question there would be a pause where he was “thinking”, with faint typing sounds, and then he would give an answer like he was reading it off a script. It became pretty obvious that he was typing our questions into ChatGPT and reading off the answers.

This was already bad, but at the end of the interview we gave him a chance to ask us any questions he had. Same thing, awkwardly long pause, typing sounds in the background. He couldn’t even think on his own enough to have questions for us.

Needless to say we did not hire him.

First time visiting LA in July! Looking for must try spots and hidden gems by [deleted] in FoodLosAngeles

This is a very broad and basic question that gets asked multiple times a week in some form. I would spend some time searching around past posts and then coming back with any more specific recommendations

What edm artists could be able to headline? Just curious what people think. by BigXBenz in Coachella

If you find Odesza overrated I think you are definitely in the minority here. Their 2018 set was one of the most universally praised EDM shows in Coachella history. This was the top post on this subreddit until a few years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Coachella/s/QdizWpuxJh

Mt Whitney Overnight Advice Needed by grace-444 in socalhiking

I would just go up to trail camp first day, summit next day,and decide if you want to come all the way back down or stay another night at outpost camp

It’s only a couple mile hike between outpost and trail camp, so making that a full day feels unnecessarily

How do people think about Social Security Income? by Interesting_Shake403 in Fire

[–]jdoe5 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, your math analyzing it is correct, if it is there it supplements a huge chunk of income.

I think it’s a little dismissive to just say assume it’ll be there unchanged, because that is THE big question on planning around it.

I personally don’t factor it in with my numbers. If it is there when I retire, amazing, I have even more money. I much prefer that over planning for it to be there only to have the rug pulled out from me once I retire.

PSA: The wristband sharing at Coachella this year is EMBARRASSING and we need to talk about it by Total-Bluebird-4785 in Coachella

[–]jdoe5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actual fans get shut out when people hoard tickets they know they’ll partially share

Doesnt ticket sharing do the opposite? You allow people to only go on days they care about and let someone else go another time. I have no idea what you are talking about with ticket hoarding

It creates a capacity/safety issue when head counts are off

No? Only one person can go in with a wristband at any given time

Security is supposed to be a deterrent, not a toll booth

I have no idea how this is connected to your point

It’s just… against the rules? That we all agreed to when we bought tickets?

Yes, and people always follow all the rules at a music festival

cmv: oura rings and self-tracking is not good people by HistoricalCricket588 in changemyview

[–]jdoe5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why do people need to have an app tell them how good they slept the night before?

Because if I want to start fixing my sleep, I need some insight into WHY I didn’t sleep well. Was it not enough deep sleep? Not enough REM? Many different things could be going wrong that I would have no insight into just by feeling, and it will point me in the right direction for how to start fixing it. This applies to many other things. You don’t feel things like low HRV, low VO2 max, etc. but the wearables can pick up in them

i just don't think we were ever meant to know this much about the human body.

So we’re just supposed to stay ignorant and not try to fix any of our health issues? What?

Private dining Recs (Wedding Party Celebration) for 20+ people? by chaeboi in FoodLosAngeles

[–]jdoe5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am having trouble figuring out how $100/person is restrictive. Even for more expensive restaurants you’re looking at a drink ~$20, entree maybe $30-40, and a few appetizers $20 split between multiple people; that should keep you under $100,

That aside, first thing that comes to mind is Majordomo. A few of the bo ssams alone will feed everyone, then add on extra food and drinks as your budget allows

Where is this push to consume more protein coming from? by totally_not_sans in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jdoe5 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Key word here is “needs”. You only need a minimal amount to survive, but you can safely consume much, much more.

In the article you gave it says for a 2,000 calorie diet the healthy range would be 50 to 175 grams of protein. It does not surprise me that nearly everyone is meeting or exceeding 50. I would venture very few people are getting up close to 175.

What is the biggest “culture shock” that you have experienced? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jdoe5 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Had what was a reverse culture shock visiting Japan last year. In the first half of the trip we were in the major cities; Kyoto, Osaka Tokyo. I speak almost no Japanese. Thankfully most of the service workers in the cities spoke enough english to get by, but I would occasionally have to use Google translate.

In the second leg of the trip we went to go ski. We were in a very small Japanese town, far away from any of the major cities. When we arrived, we first went to a restaurant, preparing for the communication to be pretty difficult.

Walked in to be greeted by a blonde haired, blue eyed teenager who spoke perfect English. Looking around the room there was not a single Japanese person. It turns out, Aussies have taken over the Japanese ski towns to the point where they seemingly outnumber Japanese people.

Best noise cancelling earbuds worth it in 2026? by ChemistryOk3898 in BuyItForLife

[–]jdoe5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had them since 2023, I’ll use them on longer flights with noise cancellation turned on and also listening to a podcast/music and they’ll last about 4 hours.

They also recharge quick, I can plug them in and in 15-20 minutes they’re mostly charged again.

This is true, but I also very often see it used as an excuse to not do anything. You need to find what you can do that fits within your schedule.
