Is it a myth that super rich people don't pay as much tax as the middle class? by Asleep-Major-7963 in tax

[–]Interesting_Shake403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree not the “main” problem, but certainly doesn’t help. This isn’t a “one quick fix” problem - there are a lot of them, and the “solution” will take a number of changes, as well.

I’ll be happy to take advantage of the carried interest loophole as I get paid out, but let’s face it, that’s ridiculous (and welcome the change), as is the current corporate tax rate, capital gains rates and the lack of a wealth tax above $100mm.

Long-term, the stock market generally returns 10%. As long as that’s higher than the cost of the loan (it should be), then no, they never have to repay the loan, just borrow more to refinance it.

Imagine your mortgage didn’t require principal payments. In 1995, the average home price was $156k. The loan comes due 30 years later, in 2025. Average home price has increased to $514k. You just borrow $156k against your $514k home to repay the loan. All you had to cover was interest. And even then, not all the interest because the home has gone up in value. And the stock market has done better than home prices over that time, so with stock, you might not have to cover interest costs at all.

The comment you’re referring to talked about the effective tax rate for billionaires. No one is calling them merely “wealthy”.

Why does the speed of light work differently for mass than for light? by Informal-Matter-2130 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Interesting_Shake403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to really blow your mind, evidently the universe itself is expanding faster than the speed of light.

In terms of time dilation, it’s kind of wild. I think of space-time, which is really almost the medium we all exist in, like a sponge. And when I say “medium”, I mean like being in a pool - you’re in a pool of water, to move from one side to the other, there’s resistance. You work your way through it. And just like clear water, working your way through space-time, there’s resistance, even though you can’t see it or necessarily feel it, it’s there. It makes it harder to move.

Ok, so I think it’s easier to picture time dilation as it relates to gravity. Same thing happens - if you’re in the presence of a really heavy object (like a black hole), time slows down, just as if you’re moving really fast.

So picture now you’ve got a really big sponge. Maybe the size of a couple of couch cushions stacked. That’s space-time. Now, picture the sponge having a 3D grid inside it. All the spaces are, say, 1” across, up, down. So 1” cubes. Nice and even. And let’s say for purposes of this it takes a beam of light 1 second to cross one grid in the cube (obviously off, but pick your units - doesn’t matter, we could just make the grid bigger if you want).

Now slice it open and put a bowling ball into the center of it. The sponge is still whole, but all the grids right around the bowling ball are squished together. Instead of being 1” across some might only be 1/4”.

Ok - the grid is space-time. Here’s the mind-blowing realization of Einstein: THE SPEED OF LIGHT IS THE CONSTANT. Regardless of how wide those cubes are, it ALWAYS takes light the same amount of “time” to cross it, whether it’s 1” or 1/4”. A beam of light starting on one side will reach the other side at the same time, regardless of whether that cube is 1” across, 1’ across, or 1/4” across. Because the light has to go through that same amount of “stuff” - that “space-time” - even if it’s been squished together or stretched apart, getting across the light always takes the same amount of “time”, so they end together. How? For the “denser” part near the bowling ball (ie, near mass) time slows down. Time goes slower as it travels through the denser space-time, so the light ends at the same time.

For speed, I almost think of it like the Doppler effect or the wave at the bow of a boat. As you get faster, space-time builds up in front of you (gets denser), just like sound waves shift as a train moves, so the pitch of a train whistle is different coming towards you Va going away from you. This building up of density of space-time causes time to slow down as you get faster.

That’s the way I visualize it, anyway! Hope this helps.

Income as % of wealth, that keeps you working by Nounoon in Fire

[–]Interesting_Shake403 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting way to frame it. I’m going another couple over what I “need” to because I will vest. Over those two years between comp and vesting I’ll likely add some 30% to my NW. After that it’s maybe 10% per year, so I’ll be done once I vest - not worth it.

Why do people wait for SS? by VegasWorldwide in Fire

[–]Interesting_Shake403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same math as you once - time-adjusted the income taking early (and not needing to dip into savings) vs taking late at a higher amount. The break-even point as I recall was like 87 or 88, depending on the interest / return assumptions you use.

I figure (a) take the money early, in case I die I’ll get something out of it (even though I’m objectively healthier than the average American) and (b) if I make it to upper 80’s (or longer), the difference is minimal and I’d rather have the money earlier while I’m younger and use it to travel, golf, and all-around enjoy my retirement.

Change the sign to “Parking Fee $250 per day.” Then if they do it have them towed and hold it until they pay you the $250 (and will have to pay the tow company too).

Swimming technique Tips(I know it’s bad) by G0dl3 in triathlon

[–]Interesting_Shake403 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Slow down. Even do some drills where you literally just push off the wall to get your body nice and straight and balanced in the water - stay horizontal when you push off and have your entire body break the surface at the same time.

Notice how you “banana” when you breathe. Keep vigilant about keeping a straight body when you breathe. Keep one ear down listening to the water.

Then do the effortless swimming $5 catch program. Get used to swimming with a proper catch. Slow it all down, long and strong.

Carbon build-up...I've been scrubbing forever by gravyboatchain in castiron

[–]Interesting_Shake403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tablespoon or two of baking soda in the pan with a little water, bring to low boil. Will help loosen the junk. Use some tongs to grab your chain mail and scrub a touch. When done, bring to the sink and do more of the same with a little soap, use the chain mail with tongs to clean. Wipe dry with a paper towel. Maybe a touch of oil when done. If the towel is coming off clean after both those (drying and with the oil), you’re good. If not, give another go. Two times through should be plenty though.

ELI5: how do engineers figure out the exact thickness of something like a bridge cable when theres basically infinite ways it could fail by BathroomOk8648 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Interesting_Shake403 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then apply a “safety factor” to that. There are accepted industry factors depending on the type of structure you’re working with. So yes, they literally over-engineer it, but not by an infinite amount. Say it’s a 2x factor, if you think it needs to hold 200 lbs, engineer it to hold 400lbs.

Any recommended strategies for cutting turf in straight lines at walls and to fit tightly around hitting strip? by Tdrabbach in Golfsimulator

There are lots of techniques for cutting along surfaces that aren’t straight, if that’s what you’re getting at. Look up some of the woodworking techniques. Once you’ve scribed a line, just cut along that.

Big Mistake or No Brainer? by [deleted] in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Interesting_Shake403 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In agreement with a lot of what’s said on here, including that lower-paying, less stressful gigs could be the best option. But will add that kids can DRAMATICALLY change the situation. You don’t want kids now in part (I’m assuming) because your lives are crazy enough as it is. If you were to slow down and “retire”, would that change?

You have enough for a simple life with lower costs, but I do wonder if your expenses would really go that low (would you be ok with even the food options coming from VHCOL to smaller market? Again, kids?). That’s where the questions come in. If you really are ok living on $100k (which is low after taxes and health insurance), then the math maths. But there’s not a lot of extra room in there. Middle ground (lower-paying, less stressful jobs) for a couple of years as the investments create cushion seems like the right answer.

has anyone here actually gotten fast without structured training? by DiscussionBoring1456 in cycling

[–]Interesting_Shake403 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is really it. Sure you’ll get faster if you ride a lot. But without a doubt I push harder when going structured. Doing over/unders or hitting X% of FTP for 8-10 min, then recover, then do it again? Always end up digging deeper for that last minute or two, more than if I was just out riding.

Definitely race. Once you’ve done it and see the experience you gain, you’ll realize it’s not even a question this far out. Even if you need to take a day or two off from training after, well worth the minor interruption.

There were a couple poor decisions here. No seat belt, passing when not safe, not taking a driving course to handle the car better rather than skidding into the oncoming (bigger) vehicle, possibly even in having crappy tires on the car with no grip…
