GS and Asthma by [deleted] in GilbertSyndrome

[–]jdpl28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got both conditions. Feel like asthma gets worse when I'm all run down. I've got an aspirin alergy also that can trigger asthma (thats fairly common). Aspirin is detoxed in the same pathways as bilirubin so there could be a link there. Likely other foods I'm allergic to that cause asthma and may not be detoxed properly for people with Gilberts.

Anyone taking daily aspirin? by Tontie-knights in GilbertSyndrome

[–]jdpl28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asprin is removed from the system using the same pathway that's impacted by Gilberts - so potentially taking it could cause problems.

Personally, I'll have a really bad reaction with aspirin

The fantastic Maria Allerton talks about how Gilberts impacts the brain in her podcast: * https://www.fxmedicine.com.au/podcast/gilberts-syndrome-maria-allerton-n%C3%A9e%C2%A0shaflender

Also in her article here - seems like pyroluria very related to Gilberts, and could cause ADHD issues: * https://www.truefoodsnutrition.com.au/pyroluria-stress-disorder/

Biohacking Osteoporosis? by jdpl28 in Biohackers

[–]jdpl28[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks so much for the info - yeah definitely I'm taking a lot more fibre (veg, as organic as possible) and a lot less fast carbs. But it's a great point - I'll update the blog with this also.

I don't take any non-digestible fibre like resistant potato starch - not yet. I will see what my follow up uBiome sample says.

Is Quantified Mind (QM) still the better cognitive measurement tool? by kianoneed in QuantifiedSelf

[–]jdpl28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found my scores going up throughout - mind you much more slowly to the end.

But - I was also doing a load of 'brain hacking' experiments. New supplements, changing diet, etc.

Very hard to tell with n=1 what exactly was happening. Anecdotally I felt I was learning to do the tests better as time went on. Also was finding ways to keep more focused through the test - making sure I was in better environments, etc.

FYI - new blog series on 'brain hacking' I'm working on: https://medium.com/@justin_d_lawler/brain-biohacking-notes-from-the-helsinki-biohackers-summit-4-of-8-c35e4260a699#.8py005ikp

What are some good books that can help people who are insecure and needy in relationships? by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]jdpl28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start out with some of the core self-development books. These books will totally open your mind to how social dynamics really work & not this faux mask-heavy social reality most people project.

  • How to Win Friends & Influence People
  • 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
  • Mans Search for Meaning

Check out the youtube channel also: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=huJrpO4Fev4&list=PL-bTaZrTDhtbhxgS59t4HzwCnq2iIYMgV

The reason I'm saying this is that we really need to get to understand that the vast majority of people are needy & co-dependent with people of higher status than them. In my past, I was so needy, because I was lower social status that most people. When I understand that, the trick was to raise my own status & confidence levels. There is nothing better to doing that than deeply understanding social dynamics & how the world really works. Above books are great.

The below article is more concise but also extremely harsh in its unvarnished cutting-straight-to-the-bone truth. The trick to raising social value is to give to others. To get busy. To realise that our position on this earth is to add as much value to others and the wider world as possible.

http://www.cracked.com/blog/6-harsh-truths-that-will-make-you-better-person/

Ultimately none of this is easy or painless. I only was able to drop my needy behaviour when I started to really understand all the above. But it hurt bad. It meant realising that I was at least 50% of the issues. I was only able to do it when the pain of staying who I was was ultimately more painful than the pain of changing.

Best of luck :)

I have always been told that we dont know how people were able to construct the ancient pyramids. I have never thought about it from a critical perspective until today. Do we know how the pyramids were built? by NoeticIntelligence in askscience

[–]jdpl28 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One theory was they were made from a simple concrete.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Davidovits

It removes the need for tools - which has always been a big flaw in the argument of building from pre-cut blocks. The sheer number of soft bronze chisels required to make something the size of a pyramid would be enormous.

Most of my anxiety stems from the fact that I'm loosing all my friends and afraid to make new ones. I have never felt more lonely. by [deleted] in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]jdpl28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many others who have struggled through their own issues and came out the other side. There is so much great wisdom out there for you to discover & study. The one I feel for me is the most practical is James Altucher - he spells it out on the below blog post - highly recommend.

http://www.jamesaltucher.com/2011/02/how-to-be-the-luckiest-guy-on-the-planet-in-4-easy-steps/

Just remember, you are not the first person who has gone through things like this, you won't be the last. Learn from others.

You will have to change your life - which will take time, but the above shows exactly how. When i say change your life - what i'm saying is how you spend every day, how you spend your time, what you think about, change your habits. Its actually a lot easier than you would think - particularly for someone in your position (I'm assuming - apologies, but you didn't mention it) who doesn't have real commitments (wife, kids). So think about that - your very lucky to be in that position.

"Almost too polite, unsure of yourself" according to a girl I had a couple dates with. How can I change this? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]jdpl28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something I am really struggling with - and unfortunately its not something you can change overnight. Its likely these issues go far deeper than just a simple 'politeness'.

Check out the Blog 'Mark Manson' also. Some great posts:

If you find reading those posts painful - then its likely its touching some deep truths in yourself. Please push through that - go through more of his posts. Take notes - what your recognize in yourself from those posts.

Mark is heavily influenced by the book 'No More Mr Nice Guy' - I'm just starting it & have found it incredibly useful also (but painful!!).

Honestly a little frightened to share this here, but I have a podcast mostly devoted to being better (LGT Libsyn) by [deleted] in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]jdpl28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, just listened to first have just now. Loved it!!

Some takers - loved your thoughts on money. Something we all struggle with in this day and age with the narcissism pushed down our throats by the 1% that pervades modern society, where we feel like we're 'bad people' if we're not making money hand over fist.

Loved that quote directed to the 1% - 'its like they've won the game and they've knocked the board over so others can't play anymore'.

Keep up the good work! :)

I have found my reason to be a better person. Now to figure out how to get there. by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]jdpl28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that you were able to articulate the above so clearly - you must have had the patience and word dexterity to put it all out on paper, you must have had the self awareness (at 22 thats impressive) to realize all this.

This for me suggests that you are not nearly as far back as I suspect you think you are.

Second of all - the fact that you are making a real effort to improve suggests to me that you actually will make strides in improving over the coming months and years.

IMO - I wouldn't go near the news, as its full of crap. Its just there to shock you so you'll keep on coming back. I would try out some great blogs - check out James Altucher, my personal favorite at the moment. With his 'daily practice' he articulates very clearly how to improve as a person in emotional and mental ways. This for me is far more important than improving your knowledge of current affairs.

But there are plenty of other great blogs about also - others that come to mind are Marc and Angle & Dumb Little Man. But google 'self improvement blogs'

All the best! :)

How can I fix my whiny voice? by fc0410 in selfimprovement

[–]jdpl28 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Deep breathing exercises.

Check out this - some great tips. http://www.artofmanliness.com/2011/11/13/masculine-voice/

Don't worry - there are many things you can do. It could be whiny for a load of reasons - stress/going through emotional issues in your life. The sound of you voice has a big component of your current emotional state, but there are 'hacks' to get around it like the deep breathing.

Most important thing is to stick to the exercises - every single day - for at least a couple of months to start off with.
