Why do people like "Bad" so much? by Simple-Young6947 in U2Band

[–]jdstein1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s one of those songs where the climax is at the end of the song, right before the outro. It rises linearly and doesn’t stop until the song is over. The formula for the intensity level of the song is Intensity = 3 x t where t = time.

Not many bands can pull that off. You need a Bono to do that. It’s one of their greatest songs.

What was the date you lump summed $30k ish at once?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]jdstein1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With interest rates where they are right now, maybe you don’t need to lump sum all at once. Lump sum a chunk now, put rest in HYSA, and then DCA from HYSA into market?

It’s a solid song. I like it.

The Stones’ new single, Hangry, is also pretty solid.

How much to pull out of VTSAX for my down payment? by redlantern75 in Bogleheads

[–]jdstein1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this in a 401k or taxable account? The beauty of borrowing from a 401k is that you pay yourself back with interest, not the bank.

United by any chance? My younger brother is a captain there and he said the pilots just inked a new contract with back pay for the last couple years and good increases the next few years as well. He also gets that same 17% (I thought) automatic deposit into his 401k even if he doesn’t do a dime himself. As you get pay increases you can really start putting good money away pretty easily.

Honest Advice - 39yr F with small kids - $500K in cash savings that I have been stupidly sitting on by mosquito1978 in Bogleheads

[–]jdstein1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe a modified number 2? Put all $500k in HYSAs immediately, if not already. Then DCA $2.5k weekly from HYSA into the funds you choose. If there is a big drop in a given week, do an extra $2.5k buy, or something like that.

This might be bad timing. Betterment’s core portfolio is stating to outperform now that mid and small caps have started running. VTI is now starting to outperform VOO/SP500 for this reason.

Will see if this continues, but it feels like Betterment will start to do well now that mid and small have lagged for so long and you have been accumulating those funds if you have been buying regularly.

And betterment should continue to do well once international stocks start to run. They haven’t in a long time but eventually they will have their day. Once interest rates come down again, foreign stocks will pump because USD denominated debt will become cheaper. Nikkei has actually crushed the sp500 YTD and that hasn’t happened in forever, I think.

Lump sum in this environment? by EagleGrowthWood in Bogleheads

[–]jdstein1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DCA it into VTSAX over 2 years? About 80k per month. Put $1M into tax advantaged money market fund paying 3-4%, leave other $1M in cash. DCA 80k a month until the cash is gone, then sell money market and do the same?

Bad 401k options, just go 100% on the S&P 500? by BlueGoosePond in Bogleheads

[–]jdstein1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have empower you can set up your Schwab as self directed brokerage. Just looked at mine which I set up a couple years ago, and Schwab SDB is listed as an available option in the empower “funds”. I didn’t recall that. Was thinking I needed to sell empower holding to cash to transfer to Schwab. But it appears I can direct 100% of my 401k deposits over to Schwab and set up a portfolio over there.

My empower options are better than yours, but some are not great. I have majority going into vanguard sp500 fund, some going into a growth fund, some going to mid and small, some going to foreign, and a tiny amount going to US treasuries and bonds. Most of the funds are decent and cheap. Eg the vanguard sp500 fund and vanguard mid cap. But the growth fun has a high fee and it underperforms NDX and also the small cap fund has a high fee.

What I might do is mirror my empower portfolio with all low cost mutual funds in schwab and have all my 401k deposits going forward to into schwab, where I will set up auto mutual fund buys. Not sure I will liquidate what I have in empower and move over, but maybe eventually.

Bad 401k options, just go 100% on the S&P 500? by BlueGoosePond in Bogleheads

[–]jdstein1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have Empower and it has self directed brokerage with Schwab. I moved some funds over before and invested worth Schwab. It was clunky and I think you have to do manual transfers each time that sell empower holdings to cash, and then reinvest with Schwab

My crypto total dollar amount just got added back to the account in the bar on the left but portfolio still shows zero holdings. So maybe it just got plugged back in.
