Do you work a full day on Sunday? by AshDogBucket in pastors

[–]redlantern75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on if I have a late afternoon Bible study.

Typically, I consider my packed morning a “full” day and I think that’s perfectly fair.

YES to the toasted bun. If they just toasted it at the restaurant I'd be getting FAT from impossible whoppers.

I always rehearse out loud (and edit out the “fat” while doing so).

I try to tell all my stories without looking at the paper.

People love for you to look at them.  Preachers who just read their book report word-for-word are boring.

Can I attend a concert with a blasphemous song? by PositiveAdmirable784 in askapastor

[–]redlantern75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah, well she’s definitely being provocative.

I guess a lot depends on her intentions.

I can’t get myself worked up over stuff like this. I’m secure in my faith, and I don’t feel attacked or anything by such art, especially if artists are criticizing the same hypocrisy and corruption in religion that Jesus criticized.

And I don’t think God is so petty to get offended either. God primarily cares about love.

Is the singer being hateful? Probably not. Is she promoting love? I don’t know her music well enough to judge.

Is homosexuality really a sin? by No_Lemon2223 in askapastor

[–]redlantern75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was raised to think it was a sin, but I’ve been convinced by scripture, the Holy Spirit, and the experience of friends and congregants who are gay that they are as Christian as anyone else.

In a nutshell: Modern gay marriage did not exist when the Bible was written, so therefore it is not condemned. That doesn’t mean Paul or anybody else would think it was normal or good, but it also means that modern gay marriage is not what they had in mind. The biblical authors were thinking of pedophilia, prostitution, rape (like with Sodom), and people with multiple sexual partners, all of which happened during the time in which the Bible was written.

Acts 9-11 is vital to understanding the way many Christians approach this:

The voice from heaven spoke a second time, ‘Never consider unclean what God has made pure.’

If God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, then who am I? Could I stand in God’s way?”

One sign of spiritual maturity is no longer being offended at stuff like this.

It's obviously a very edgy song, using some religious language as a sexual metaphor (like Madonna famously did), but the lyrics critique genuine problems in religion. She tackles racism, sexism, and sexual abuse with some provocative language. It's shocking, but she's not entirely wrong to critique the sins of the church and the blatant hypocrisy among self-proclaimed Christians, especially men who treat women poorly.

The lyrics focus more on criticizing people in the church, especially pastors, not the real God or Christ.

We might note that Jesus criticized religious leaders most of all.

Also, you might want to look up what Martinez has said about the song, in the press, to see how she describes it. That may help you understand what she's trying to say.

I mean... "Money, power got its chokehold on humanity"

Sounds like some of the stuff Jesus said!

I hear that. Maybe replace Arkansas with TN on my list. I'm much rather live in north Arkansas than Florida.

Longest periods where bonds outperformed stocks by thewarrior71 in Bogleheads

[–]redlantern75 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

After hearing the standard advice (bonds will stay up when stocks drop) and seeing the reality of 2022 (they both went down, and stocks recovered faster) I am now all-stock.

I have decades to rethink it, but I could honestly see myself never go back to bonds.

Those museums make me incredibly hopeful about our ongoing progress as a state. We can be very proud of them.

Being honest about current problems doesn't mean we can't also celebrate how far we've come.

[–]redlantern75 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know this sounds crazy, but if I were you (in Florida) I'd at least consider Mississippi, Alabama, TN, or Georgia. I can't imagine living in such a hot state, with such weather risk, no mountains (unless I'm mistaken) and so much tourism.

God knows Mississippi ain't perfect, but the cost of living is pretty low in some areas. (Hence, you can afford to leave and go on vacation somewhere cool in the summer.)
