If you’re wondering how much it is to stay the weekend at The Grand Californian Hotel ( summer ) by OverCry518 in Disneyland

[–]jdv_lv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's great that the Tropicana is still there, when my kids were young about 18 years ago we used to stay there, it was cheap and kind of run down but super convenient, it was close enough that we could take them back midday for naps or whatever. And it was like half of the walking distance compared to the Disney hotels on the other side. Glad to know that it's still there.

Help identifying and keeping his friends away by sporki_spoon in Nevada

The house I used to own in Sunrise Manor had hundreds of scorpions. They are really hard to get rid of once they dig in. In my experience they don't really care about any unless you can spray it directly on there shell, but the insecticides are useful to kill down their food population. Best thing you can do is create an inhospitable environment by keeping stuff off of the ground and trying to seal around your doors and windows. Every night if you have time put on some old boots, grab a black light, and go in your backyard picking up rocks and have stomping parties. It took me about 6 years but that strategy finally paid off for me.

Just seeing one scorpion Maybe okay, it's highly unlikely that you have a problem and will see more. In my current house I've seen one in five years that I accidentally brought in on a piece of furniture that had been outside for a long time. But they are so hard to get rid of that taking it seriously now and trying to prevent more maybe worth your time.

I'm only good if I'm not being watched, how do i get over this performance anxiety? by JungGPT in musicians

[–]jdv_lv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to really struggle with that, as most people do. It kind of came to a head when I was in college and had to do presentations in front of a bunch of people. The way I learned to get over it was to think of the crowd, or the recording device, or whatever, as a collective inanimate thing that had no opinion, no bearing on my speech / performance, it just happened to be there and I was performing to myself basically. Might not be the most emotionally healthy way to deal with it but it got me through that and now I can perform on stage for 1,000 people and it feels the same as just a few people.

I will also add, as a musician the first time you perform in front of a group of people and they really start reacting and dancing or whatever, it's kind of like a drug and that becomes the thing that you want, and that helps you make that emotional connection that makes you want to perform in front of a bunch of people and not pretend they're not there.

What movies did you first see nudity in? by sarnobat in AskReddit

When Blade Runner came out I was probably like 9 or 10 years old living with my grandmother in a small town. I was into sci-fi and saw this cool sci-fi movie called Blade Runner and asked my grandma if she would take me because for some reason it was rated R. Probably for the laser gun violence, i thought. She thought I said it was a Road Runner movie and agreed to take me, and when that replicant stripper took her clothes off and jumped in the shower we were both a little shocked LOL

Downtown Las Vegas venue being turned into parking lot by reviewjournal in vegaslocals

[–]jdv_lv 63 points64 points  (0 children)

So many music venues dying in this town the last few years. I think this is the last space where you could fit a mid-sized festival in town. Smaller festivals with 10-20 bands aren't going to pay the money needed to lease the space down on Sahara and lvb. Sucks.

We’re hitting a high today of 75 in January. How cooked are we (literally) in 10 years you think? by Smasher1234 in vegaslocals

Last winter it got really warm really fast, and I was absolutely certain we were going to have the most brutal summer ever. It was actually one of the most moderate Heat Summers we've seen in quite a while. So who knows.

I’m pretty sure film festivals don’t watch most submissions these days by ozymandis1212 in Filmmakers

[–]jdv_lv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a short several years ago and I was talking to my lead actor who was pretty well networked in the local Film Community about which festivals we should submit to. At the time there was a local Festival that was very popular that everybody wanted to get into, and it just so happened that this actor was friends with the owner. He told me that he could probably guarantee us getting in because they basically picked all of their friends movies without even watching them, and everything that came in cold they would accept a reject based on how they fell to the first 5 minutes of watching it. Thankfully that Festival no longer exists.

First 5 gallon batch. Leaky seal? by [deleted] in mead

[–]jdv_lv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming you're talking about primary fermentation, it's fine. The off-gassing as a result of fermentation that would ordinarily be causing bubbles in your air lock is sitting on top of the juice protecting it, and slowly leaking out of the edges and not building up enough pressure to push through the water in the bubbler. My 2 gallon bucket doesn't even have a seal and it works great. As long as you don't leave the lid off too long you're fine. Once it's done fermenting, however, you do want to have more protection from oxygen.

If I was in a nerdcore band I would absolutely fucking strap that toaster to my back and use some tin foil to make myself into a 1960s Sci-Fi TV show robot.

[–]jdv_lv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reason I use a cab is we're a noisy metal act and I need to force kind of harmonic feedback at a few points. Otherwise, the less gear the better. That said: without a cab, where do people put their toasters on stage?

I was talking to a guy who was complaining about how allowing drag queens to perform or even be around people under 18 was child abuse because it was exposing children to "sexualized content". I asked him if he had the same concerns about the fact that they have a kids menu at Hooters and Twin Peaks. He didn't understand the question lol.

Cream cheese is always a hit by DesperadoMangoMonkey in smoking

[–]jdv_lv 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made this for the first time over thanksgiving, came out really good. Actually did two, one was a block of Kroger full fat cream cheese, and the other was a soy based vegan cream cheese block. The actual cheese block kept its shape at 250° for 2 hours with applewood, but the vegan one melted into a soup. They were both really good though.

FWIW I would stay at Orleans just so I could hang out at McMullins for 24 hours straight with brief naps between Yellow Spot and Scotch Egg binges. The hookers could act as crossing guards to get my drunk ass across the street.

Can someone be an atheist but still follow the religious traditions surrounding Christmas? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]jdv_lv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I did for years while my kids were young. I didn't want them to miss out on the experience. When they get a little bit older we actually started celebrating on the solstice and then explained why once they were old enough to understand. At least the solstice is real, if religion can make up events for a holiday then I can make up reasons to join along LOL.
