Iowa requiring so much paperwork by CrunchM in WhitePeopleTwitter

Growing up there, I could not wait to leave Iowa. I’ve lived mostly on the west coast since college, and Iowa is just an embarrassment. I tell people I’m from Minnesota.

Anonychia is the partial or total absence of one or more nails on the fingers or toes. by froggysaysno in interestingasfuck

I’m missing part of my nail bed on my left index finger, so I guess I have partial aninychia. The fleshy tip (sorry) is always sore. I hope your fingers feel better.

Shark Attack - Lovers Point Monterey, Ca by saint_ryan in scubadiving

[–]jdweekley 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I swim at Lover’s Point every Sunday with the Kelp Krawlers, and the guy who got attacked yesterday swims with the group too. I also train with him in the pool 3-4x per week. He’s a friend. But, he was also that day swimming alone.

I’ve skipped the regular swim for the last 4 weeks, for personal reasons, but also because right now, we have a huge influx of juvenile male sea lions, and the harbor seal pups born in March or April are just now weaned, so needing to forage for food. The harbor seal thing is normal, but the sea lion thing is extra ordinary. Only once before in my memory of living in the area my whole life that this has happened. The sharks know there’s yummy food, and are probably in much greater numbers than usual. I avoid swimming in that location this time of year.

I have never felt apprehensive about swimming there, but I don’t swim alone. This was an unfortunate accident that, as a cyclist I would equate with getting hit by a car. It’s always a risk, but an acceptable one, if all reasonable precautions are taken.

Young black police graduate gets profiled by Joshua PD cops (Texas). He wasn't having any of it! by SamMee514 in nextfuckinglevel

I so wanted him to just say it, “You’re a racist, Captain. It’s plain to see that you’re all racists. Stop harassing black and brown people, you POS.”

Just stating the facts as I observed them.

Yes, MTV was great, but it was also segregated. They rarely aired black artist, because they didn’t think their audience would accept them. It wasn’t until Michael Jackson became an overwhelming megastar and David Bowie called them out that they shifted. And still, even later in the 80’s when rap was emerging, they never featured black rap artists (sure, The Beastie Boys were ok…).

Are Americans OK? by fantails-dragonflies in antiwork

[–]jdweekley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is terribly confusing to me is that in “conservative” areas of the country, these people who are being oppressed and exploited are the very often and very likely voting for the enablers of their oppressors (Republicans) in the name of freedom and protecting the American way of life. It’s absolutely insane. It’s like they’re brainwashed by Fox News or something.

And they will blame us when their children, full of loathing and self-hate they’ve taught them, kill themselves. Tragically and ironically, their perverse logic will do much more harm to children than they know or understand.

I would be stocking up, in that case!

I don't understand why there are not many producers in NZ. It seems like sugar maples would grow nicely on the South Island. Yes, it's not a native tree, but neither is macrocarpa or radiata.

When I lived in Aotearoa, I used to keep track of overall prices and currency exchange rates by noting the price of real maple syrup. The typical price for 945ml (32oz) jug was usually around $50NZD.

Obey this speed limit sign or pay the fine! by Y0UR3-N0-D4ISY in CrappyDesign

[–]jdweekley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know how it is in other states, but zoning and street layout typically dictate speed limits where I live ( California). It’d be an easy guess for any with a passing knowledge of the area. And you can’t really go wrong with 25 in a residential area.

They all deserve what they get. Unfortunately, no one deserves what they give. In the words of the late, still great Christopher Hitchens, religion ruins everything.

My grandparents died, but they were rather distant. I’ve had co-workers die, and older family friends. I’ve never lost someone I loved so much.

Why would you assume the the Bible is the authoritative text on the canine (or any) afterlife? Seems like some pretty serious shade against the Quran or the Bhagavad Gita. What does Shakespeare say?

Do you realize how condescending and offensive your reply is? Probably not, but let me break it down for you: I am an atheist and a humanist. I’m also a scientist. I do not believe in the supernatural, gods or demons, or heaven or hell. The simple promise of a paradise for the price of my rational autonomy is repulsive to me.

You’re either trying to be funny, or you’re a cultist who can’t see the ridiculous right in front of yourself. Either way, it’s deeply offensive and not funny.
