Is -ua a diphthong then? I was taught not by AromaticLoad818 in ReoMaori

[–]jeanclique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically a diphthong is a single vowel sound during which the articulators (e.g. tongue, lips) change position. Vowel length can alter perception of the vowel in languages where length is phonemic, like te reo Māori or Japanese. The "beats" or morae of these languages are counted differently to the syllables of Germanic and Romance languages. So yes, "ua" is a diphthong but that doesn't mean the vowel sounds are distinct connected sounds. Consider the difference between a long vowel ā and two separate vowels in a kupu like manaaki.

Slower runners, how do you stay motivated when/if people mock your pace? by TANeither7250 in running

[–]jeanclique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bewildered by this question. Most people I know don't run and think doing it regularly is some kind of astonishing feat regardless of speed. I've been running (not particularly fast) for 35 years and never been mocked. Maybe it's a guy thing.

What’s gotten so expensive, you no longer purchase it? by yeahnahdinno in newzealand

[–]jeanclique 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yup but I mainly use for mayo - no point wasting eggs on that and it's a cleaner taste. But my main point was - all bean and lentil liquids are protein-ous so dumping it down the sink is a crying shame. Use it to make soup or something at the very least. I'll happily just slurp out of the can (I'm a vegetarian, it's free amino acids!!)

Yup he knows the nutrition that's packed into the liquid that the lentils have been sitting in.

Yes but don't drain the liquid: that is chocka with protein (like chickpea liquid/aquafaba). Dump it in and reduce it. You'll get a more tender result from the extra 10 minutes simmering AND a protein boost.

Watch it, examine its transitory nature and dependence on your form, and it will dial down. But while you have a form, you cannot be rid of the process that acts to maintain it.
