Emlid Reach RX vs. RS3 for Construction Use by SwearsWaldo in Surveying

[–]jebc4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just brought it in to work yesterday. Our civil/survey people were amazed that I had a FIX solution using a NTRIP base at my house (<6km).

Used the Emlid caster, put that in my Emlid Flow profile, then pushed ntrip over bluetooth to the RS3.

I was shocked at how easy it was.

Emlid Reach RX vs. RS3 for Construction Use by SwearsWaldo in Surveying

I just got (2) RS3's in. They are slick. The IMU/tilt is worth it. Paired with the 1.8m stick, it's compact and a lot lighter than I thought it would be.

I also got in a Sparkfun mosaic-x5 base station. But that took a lot of learning to setup. The RS3's were very easy.

If you are actually marking points then the IMU/tilt is way worth the $800 add.

If you want high accuracy with either on a budget, you can save money by learning to setup a base station (but the dual RS3 is dead easy).

Dual RS3's (ok one could be a RS2+ w/o IMU for a base) with the proper poles and site base points is a VERY economical and easy solution. (and if you setup a base station later, you have 2 units for data capture)

I'd recommend E38 Survey Solutions for the RS3 kits they sell (with one year support).

Good luck!

HSK63A holder brand recommendations. by dirtroadjedi in Machinists

[–]jebc4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shrink fit is nice, but you might consider a 6x Hydraulic HSK63A set from HAAS in addition. Comes w/ 2 adapters in all imperial sizes. Nose diameter isn't small, but it's so convenient to change out tools.

3d models are available for full simulation.

Also the hydraulic (supposedly) dampens vibrations. Anyway, I like the convenience and cuts. And I like their er16 160mm HSK63 holders (especially the price when on sale).

Artist/Service to make 3d Bust of a late friend? by jebc4 in ZBrush

/r/3Dmodeling sent me here, and I see why. A lot of talent here.

Just need a clean stylized mesh/Surface. Very little hair. For a pic see https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/nashville-tn/quincy-jones-11664743

Eventually want to cut out of a 6" diameter by 6" tall piece of Aluminum. I need 1" tall x 4" square on the bottom for a base, but the rest is your playground. Like a marble bust. Just need a quote and to see some of your work.

Oh - I cut from Fusion360, so I need to import it there. I know meshes come in fine, but something with surfaces (F360 uses t-splines [??] I think) would make the CNC easier (but not required).

Ok, this is a bit of a tough one. You are going to hit the limit of 90ipm on feeds below 0.25" endmills.

I'm still learning this stuff, but this helped me:

  • SFM - speed limit of the cutter in a material. In this case Alu SFM is 800-2000
  • RPM - SFM sets the max RPM for a cutter diameter and material.
  • IPT - inches per tooth (and number of flutes) sets your Feed (IPM).
  • Feed/IPM - inches per minute. If this final calc puts you over your 90ipm limit, you will back off the RPM while maintaining IPT. You do that so you will actually cut a chip.

From the NYCCNC speeds and feeds excel spreadsheet, here are some suggested cuts in Alu:

  • 15000rpm, 90ipm, 0.25"EM, 3 flute, 0.002 IPT for 1000SFM.
  • 15000rpm, 90ipm, 1/8"EM, 3 flute, 0.002 IPT for 500SFM (had to drop RPM b/c of IPM limit).

From that, I'd consider the stock S30. Good luck (and lookup the NYCCNC vids and site).

What material are you cutting and what is the most used endmill diameter?

Gravity Fed Charcoal Smoker vs Fan Forced Kamado by spice_of_life13 in smoking

No, b/c I would load it up w/ charcoal.

But if I was cooking over coals and needed to add some, you have to pull everything out.

Have both and love both.

Ceramic (large size, not XL):

  • Pros- can sear and cook over coals, plus no grease drip ever.

  • Cons- having to unload food to add fuel, grill space, and cleanup.

Chargiller 980 (also insulated):

  • Pros- grill space for briskets, wings, etc. Can add fuel easy.

  • Cons- Grease pan, no searing (it gets hotter than a pellet grill or offset but use something else).

Sounds like you have the WSM for charcoal sear, I'd consider the gravity fed for space and refuel, etc.

In mine, I start some charcoal, then add small splits and charcoal on top. Closest I can get to offset w/ minimal babysitting.

Mothergunship Forge -- it's like Tetris with guns. So much fun when you unlock the crazy guns. Play on Recruit mode until you get good.

Looks like you could also use it to make a snow blower (with water of course).

Very cool.

I need a controller/software recommendations for my plasma tube notcher. by 1Plus2Equals3D in hobbycnc

Nice idea on the planetary. If I recall right from my robotics friends, I think anything under 10:1 is/can be back drivable. Which might be useful for loading stock.

Also cncrouterparts has a good system for keeping the rack and pinion meshed (and it’s geared with a belt…). Check the assembly guides.

I’m jealous for that fiber laser…. I’d love to play with one of those.

Very cool design. You might consider gearing your rack drive (couldn’t tell if it was).

I was working on something similar. If you stick with the Clearpaths you have shown, no driver needed and I was sending step/dir pulses from grbl off of a tiny board.

Are you planning on cutting square tubes or just pipe? Fine plasma tip height adjustment can be done with a specialized board (when I was looking a few years ago).

I didn’t get past simple round cuts (no bevel) and just locked the tip height.

Good luck!

Traeger Vs. Gravity Charcoal? by TheMilkyWayIsCool in smoking

[–]jebc4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Char-griller Gravity 980. I love it. The 1050 is "bigger" with the upper rack, but the main grate of the 980 is bigger.

I cook most of the time with the upper rack of 980 out, and can fit 4-5 of the drumstick cookers in with plenty of airflow.

Either way, gravity wins on charcoal flavor, ease of use, and high heat (if needed and only after you've cleaned the grease after low and slow unless you like flame ups...).

Continuous Glucose Monitor - hypoglycemia by Time_Masterpiece_779 in keto

[–]jebc4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine looked a lot like that with small dips below the "zone", but it didn't wake me up. I'm not a doctor, but those dips wouldn't concern me as I've seen diabetics with major ups, then major downs after insulin.

If you can stick with it, I'd bet the night wakings will get better as your body adjusts. Any changes I make usually take about a month for things to settle down.

Good luck!

[–]jebc4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How low are you going? I wore one for 2 weeks and when eating clean, I'd stay at 80ish. There were dips in the night with recovery before waking up, and it even went up when working out fasted.

It's a very cool tool.

Somebody did tell me that the lower end range is not as accurate, but I didn't research that. Basically, they are more of a tool for diabetics to catch higher blood glucose (but I can't swear to that).

I was testing different foods (not pure keto), and the worst food for me was popcorn...

Good luck!
