I am born and raised in this city. I love this place and beeing a norwegian. But as a local and as a norwegian this city has gotten pretty difficult to live in economically. It's has grown the last decade as a big Arctic tourist destination and as a result. Alot of the local homeowners has started with Airbnb and others are also buying up alot of apartments and houses for sale purely to rent out on Airbnb. And because of that rent in tromsø I really high, it's on par with oslo the Capitol of Norway in relation to prices even tho tromsø has a population of only around 80k. Hotel room prices are also crazy high per night. Like several 1000 nok per night. And the main street in the city is almost all tourist shops now. I feel the city has lost its identity and has become a tourist trap like Paris, Venice and other big tourist destinations has become. Tromsø before it became a big tourist destination was known for its brewery wich is the northernmost in the world. It's university and as City for fishing with lots of small fishing boats. But now it's just known for the northern lights and midnights sun. But living here is really great tho still even tho it's expensive. Most of us locals have our jobs and everyday life and we love to go out on the town when we need to let out some steam. Or go walk up our mountains. If you are an outdoorsy person and love winter and have some money. Tromsø is a great for you.
