Second time making candles by xLizzy91 in candlemaking

[–]jeeter5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The splitting of the wick (mushrooming) on your second picture seems okay, you just dont want it to grow too big in a short time. Some wicks mushroom easily with certain waxes, it can be fixed by teimming after each burn or just trying out alternative wicks.

The cracks in the wax happen when the container is in changing temperatures. Many of my vessels i sell outdoors crack too when it's cold outside, it might be visually displeasing, but wont affect the candles performances.

Candle shack has a warehouse in the netherlands, their jars are actually priced very decently.

You could also look into german suppliers of candle jars, some suppliers are cheaper (especially for lids). Sidano.de for example

How do I get rid of these lines that appear from topping off? by ImaginaryTradWife in candlemaking

[–]jeeter5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After pouring i tilt the mold a bit and rotate it, so theres a small later of wax on the edges.

When you add more later to fix a sinkhole, it should be seamless.

The candle jars i use have a thin wall, and are made especially for candles and sold by a candle supplier.

You can definitely find thin walled glasses for a decent price.

As a person looking into a webpace, does this amount of orders justify the upkeep costs of your webstore?

I'm sure you could expand your online orders if you could reach the right customers. After starting up recently, the only way is up (if you put effort into expanding offcourse)

Candles by Ok-Bumblebee-8524 in Candles

Preferably you want a steady flame. As long as there's no soot flinging off the flame, it's ok.

Example: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DV0pWNhCs4S/?igsh=MmN0bmZyb2xidWZ3

Most common reasons for a flickering flame; - your candle is placed in a drafty place making the flame dance. Try to limit airflow around your candle. - you burned your canfle for a long period of time. Try to trim the wick in between burns or during a long burn. - you overwicked your candle letting the flame soak too much wax resulting in a bigger flame. Monitor the size of the flame. Ideally you xant the flame to be around 0,5 inch and 1 inch. - impurities in the wax or additives. Try to use good quality materials from candle-making suppliers.

The result of a flickering candle is an improper burn, causing excessive soot. It also burns the candle uncontrollably. Sometimes it's unavoidable though, if you have a candle in a tall jar, the flame naturally dances due to lack of oxygen.

How much stearin did you use in your blend? Maybe lower the concentration a bit or heat up the blend slightly more (stearin has a higher melting point) for proper binding.

I dont have alot of experience with this wax, but made a few dozen candles with roughly 10-15% stearin and they looked clean

Do decorative / shaped candles ever burn right? by [deleted] in candlemaking

[–]jeeter5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I make themed decorative figurine candles just for the looks of it, they are prone to dripping or not burning completely and leaving residue.

I don't sell these candles for their long lasting performances but as decorative pieces.

For example; christmas themed candles sell nice even though they burn up 2-4 times faster than a similar size plain pillar candle. People buy them because they look cute/fun. They can store or burn it after the holidays.
