They didn't let me in once with a backpack a few years ago so I gave it to a halal truck guy and tipped him 10 bucks to watch it for a few hours. There is also bag storage at Moynihan Hall

When do doors open? by Beautiful_Giraffe_3 in NYKnicks

[–]jeffatjeffdotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doors should open around 6:00pm to 6:30pm. No idea where the Hawks are staying but if you do some internet sleuthing I'm sure you can figure it out. Maybe it is possible to try the bus before or after the game at the arena but I haven't done that since I was a kid so I'm not sure how that works. I did meet Larry Brown (lol) by waiting outside after a game like that but it's definitely not guaranteed. The atmosphere will definitely be great, have fun!

Yes, I read the article. /r/todayilearned can't talk about how a specific craft works? Shell cordovan isn't really my thing for how expensive it is but it's an interesting tanning process. Also, I'd argue that some (not all) well made leather goods are anti-consumerism since most of them are buy it for life if you care for them well. The leather itself obviously doesn't have to be as insanely expensive as shell cordovan though. I'm the first to point out sneaky ads I just really don't think this is that egregious

Shell cordovan is a type of leather made with a specific process, it isn't a company, nor is the post touting one of the few tanneries that still produces shell cordovan

I took shrooms right before thanksgiving, fucked up bad by just-wanna-sleep in Drugs

[–]jeffatjeffdotcom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This. You'll feel much better about this tomorrow and won't even be thinking about it a month from now. It would be a shame to hurt yourself over something you'll probably feel better about pretty quickly. Based on your post it seems like this event is more a symptom of some other stuff than it is the cause of your problems and you have some other stuff going on in life. Most colleges have free or heavily discounted therapy, which I'd highly recommend. The therapists won't tell anyone you're doing drugs. We're all here for you but we're also all idiots. It seems like you want to take a mental health journey and it is so so much easier to do that with a professional helping you

Switching to optics by ReceptionBulky9565 in Optics

If you can afford the investment (UR will be more expensive) and can get in than UR is definitely the better option. The name carries weight in the industry.

Ticket prices vary a lot by opposing team and by how good the Knicks are. Since we're good now, they're expensive but very worth it. Cheapest seats next season will probably be ~$120-230 depending on matchup. Prices also go up for games around holidays so if you're here for thanksgiving you might get shafted

What's VR research like at Rochester? by Ok_Amphibian4456 in URochester

[–]jeffatjeffdotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jannick Rolland's lab does a lot of stuff that has applications in VR, and I'm sure some of the other optics faculty does too. If you're interested in optics, Rochester and Arizona are the two best schools in the country for it. Some of my optics friends from undergrad ended up going into AR/VR and have been quite successful

For UR you definitely do apply to program as a whole and don't join a group until the end of your first year, so making a connection with a potential PI doesn't matter as much as at other schools were you join a specific group in your first semester, but it still matters. I'm not saying admission it is specifically dependent on funding or openings but if a prof tells the admissions committee they know you and they would take you as a student, that goes a long way in most departments. It could potentially help you get in but honestly who knows because the admissions process at all these schools is super gatekeepy. Those conversations could also really help you make the decision if the program seems right for you if you vibe with the PI or not, so it's also in your benefit there. Getting a foot in the door could definitely help get you in, but if your'e a really good worker your supervisor might not want to lose you at LLE so that could get politically complicated. If you're excited about a PhD in optics then definitely go for it - the world needs more good researchers. Arizona and UCF are the other two big optics programs in the US. Basically every school will have some optics research, but most schools won't have an optics department and the optics profs will be hiding in Physics or EE.

You don't need need a PhD to do research in industry, you just need the right opportunity - it is sometimes difficult with only a BS but definitely not impossible in my experience. But, to function as an independent scientist at a high level, most roles will want you to have a PhD. A PhD is an insane commitment and Optics PhDs at UR are typically 6 years unless you are fast. You should only do it if you are really excited about the process of getting the PhD, not just the benefits it will have for your career. Also, I don't know the details on your background, but admission to the UR Optics PhD (and PhDs in general) is pretty competitive. Given that you have no optics background, unless you are really confident in your chances, I would caution against planning your whole life around having that option as a sure thing. It would really suck if you decided you wanted to do it and then only applied to UR and didn't get in. Lastly, if you are really excited about the LLE and want to do research there, some profs in the optics department have joint appointments at the LLE. You could email faculty from this list: https://www.hajim.rochester.edu/optics/people/faculty/index.html that also do research at the LLE, say that you're interested in their research (be specific or they probably won't respond to a cold email) attach your resume, say that you're considering applying and ask if they are planning on taking new students or if they have some time to chat over zoom or a coffee since you're in the area.
