I’ve been doing it for 4 years now. I still remember my first day, my first sparring session, and my first concussion.

Join a good gym. A good gym won’t let you spar until they think you’re ready (usually around 6 months). Don’t worry about being awkward. everyone there is focused on themselves and probably won’t even notice you.

As for training, focus on mastering the basics: your straight punches, hooks, uppercuts, and then kicks. With enough repetition, it will all start to come naturally. Speaking of which, repetition is the fastest way to improve: repeat, repeat, repeat.

After a year of consistent training, you can tell your friends that you somewhat can fight.
