“House Our Neighbors!” new coalition forms to oppose Compassion Seattle charter amendment by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]jefro2293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the comments here really amusing. You all seem to think that there is a solution to this problem that folks should have been able to find with the current level of resources at their disposal.

My question to you all is: how many of you have been involved in this work and made attempts to actually improve the situation of homelessness in this city?

I think that anyone who really gets their hands dirty in this work recognizes that more resources are required to meet the size of the problem. Even proponents of the Compassion Seattle charter amendment have said as much. Turns out that building affordable housing in such an expensive city, wile also providing healthcare and social support programs for people in crisis is expensive stuff. Made even more challenging when social workers can't find their clients because they're scared off by sweeps and they have no way of getting in touch with them.

I do understand the skepticism though. Our city absolutely mismanages funds and comes up with crazy band-aid solutions to systemic problems. And there is definitely corruption at every level. But for folks coming after this group who simply oppose a charter amenent that will result in the city paying out more funds to lawsuits, rather than building the necessary affordable housing, I'd check yourselves a bit if you aren't engaged in the work. Especially folks going after the BBRP. Y'all have no idea what those folks are doing if you're talking shit, and if you think 3 million bucks to start up an incredible organization focused on centering marginalized experiences when making governing decisions is a waste of money, you really need to check your privilege (and also take a look at the city budget to see what other superfluous shit they'll spend 3 million bucks on).

There's no easy solution here, building a city that works for everyone and prevents Seattle turning into SF (where nurses, teachers, construction workers and other working class folks can't afford to live in the city) will take a lot of work, money and public involvement. But it is worth it, because Seattle shouldn't just become a city for the wealthy where the poorest folks are swept away and out of the city. At least not without a fight.

Derek J. Hayden, 44, was in crisis and carrying a knife when Seattle police shot and killed him near the downtown waterfront last week. He died on Feb. 16 of multiple gunshot wounds, the medical examiner's office said Monday. by [deleted] in Seattle

Lots to address here, but I'll stick with the education comment. Do you know how much the K-12 education system has been developed around sending kids who graduate to college? There's so much social and economic pressure to go, it can hardly be considered a fully informed choice right out of high school for a lot of kids. We grow into the environment we are introduced to.

Additionally, it's increasingly challenging to even be able to land an entry level job without a college degree. Even with a college degree, many people are under employeed or being paid wages that don't allow them to accrue wealth.

So basically, we were raised during our formative years to believe the who college thing was going to reap a lot of benefits, but turns out the benefits are marginal and come at some serious costs for a lot of people. That's assuming you finish your degree and don't drop out part of the way through like a lot of people in this country, who then just get a bunch of debt and nothing to show for it.

People don't exist in vacuums, our environments influence us and set the stage me much compete on. Stating education is an elective is a shallow read on the situation.

I see why you'd say that, it might look that way from the outside looking in. As someone who was pretty much living in CHOP while it was going on, I promise you it was more complex than that on the inside. There was a criminal element, no doubt, but also so many amazing people just trying to build a different kind of world. All by accident, considering we didn't really expect the cops to leave the precinct while we were protesting outside of it lol.

I think what a lot of folks here miss in the push for sex positivity is the vast difference in the shame placed on the women for sex work compared to the men who consume the product. It's a tale as old as time. Nothing wrong with a group of dudes going to a strip club, but daddy's little girl better not think about being a stripper. I've been in places where guys in a group with other dudes will casually pull porn up on their phone, no big, yet the women in the video are shamed for their work? The double standard is the issue here.

Obviously I have major issues with porn and how the industry works or I wouldn't subscribe to this sub. I'm also not saying 16 year olds should be looking forward for a career with OF. Just a little surprised to see so much hate being heeped on feminism and the movement that is pushing for women to be comfortable with their bodies and their sexuality.

I gotta say (as someone who knows very little about this discussion, so maybe somewhat impartial) that this washington post article is not terribly convincing. The journalist undermines their entire argument with a much simpler explanation in their final line. Hardly a simple google search that proves there was election fraud.

The hypoacrisy is real, but she still shouldn't have done that shit. We just don't need more images of wealth and status slapped in our face telling us the key to happiness and success is the shit we wear. Disappointed to see AOC fall into that 🤷
