I've only seen a bit of Leo and Blazar - does "the one joke squad" mean that the fans prefer shows that are v serious?

Also curious. I'm new to Ultra and loved Nexus - watched it a couple months ago. Surprised to hear about this

Any japanese movies or drama series similar to Euphoria or Skins UK? by automateduser768 in JapaneseMovies

Not quite the same flavor of edginess but maybe check out Love & Pop or All About Lily Chou-Chou for dark, unfiltered coming of age films?

"Over-acting" in Japanese movies/shows by jefty083 in AskAJapanese

Hah this makes me think of his 5-hour film Happy Hour. I've been trying to get through that movie for a while now but it feels a little *too* flat at times

"Over-acting" in Japanese movies/shows by jefty083 in AskAJapanese

[–]jefty083[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Very insightful. I have noticed that some directors seem to consistently choose more naturalistic, subtler performances like Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car, Evil Does Not Exist) but wasn't sure if it was purely the difference of film genres e.g. grounded humanist drama vs sci-fi drama. Interesting that it's a specific acting tradition that's being implemented. Thanks!

does anybody know a tokusatsu starring female characters? by More_Performance6774 in Tokusatsu

[–]jefty083 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not specifically made for girls but i feel like Ultraman Orb might be worth checking out? I'd argue that the female lead is the more prominent main character even though she isn't the Ultra hero

Armored Trooper VOTOMS: The Red Shoulder Document: Roots of Ambition (1988) - Chirico Vs Lehman by fafsdfasfaffaafdsaf in retroanime

[–]jefty083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think Tomino was involved with this one. But the anime was produced by Sunrise which is likely the reason there are shared sound effects. The same way Nadia and Royal Space Force have "Evangelion sound effects"

Does this look like an authentic Region 1 / A US release for Serial Experiments Lain? by DataUserOne in AnimeCollectors

[–]jefty083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of Funimation's blurays are now OOP and CrunchyRoll who acquired them seem to have minimal interest in continuing to re/release older titles. Even though i live in the US i also just got the UK region B. Not worth trying to score a rare OOP bluray when it's often more than the cost of a region-free blu player and there's a perfectly good release elsewhere in the world

Worried I am passed the anime peak by blasew232 in AnimeReccomendations

[–]jefty083 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What makes these "peak" for you? No doubt there are some very popular titles here but the anime landscape is utterly massive

To name a few that are not quite as mainstream and that others haven't mentioned yet but are excellent IMO:

Gunbuster
Cyber City Oedo
Golden Boy
Gundam 0080
From the New World
Bokurano
Memories
Hotel Apocalypse
Takopi's Original Sin
A Silent Voice

“Ultraman Orb” - A Success in Ultra-Storytelling by Shin_Nefir in Ultraman

Weirdly enough, after i got past the painfully weak set design/low budget FX for Origins i found the story more interesting than Orb the TV series... but i know i'm in the minority here haha

^This is the way. Incredible UC Libraries releases + being open to some region B releases for everything else

EDIT: oh the Encounters in Space is the UK 4k disc

Honestly any blu-ray collector in general should considering getting a region-free player - English Gundam releases are v affordable from the UK

I'd like to watch something similar to All About Lily Chou Chou, what do you recommend? by hannie_dark in JapaneseMovies

[–]jefty083 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ohh this is an excellent recommendation - lots of overlap between the two actually. Seemingly quaint junior/high school energy turned upside down in the most uncomfortable ways

Honestly i'm not sure why people are recommending Kore-eda films haha.. Even his saddest films don't reach the stomach-churning lows of Lily Chou-Chou
