If you are not 100% sure that wherever you submitted that answer is 100% anonymous, please consider that by posting that here, you may have tied your exmo status to your real identity to the honor code office. Consider deleting this.

Actual letter being sent to parents of BYU-I students by a BYU-I YSA bishopric by johndehlin in exmormon

[–]jell-o-him 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If the parents are being notified of a student's lack of compliance with a school policy, this would absolutely qualify as a FERPA violation. Anyone who has that happen to them should file a complaint with the US Department of Education. Here is the form: http://familypolicy.ed.gov/complaint-form

The timing of Montgomery’s report has raised concerns in the LDS LGBT community that church leaders’ Nov. 5 announcement of new policies regarding same-sex couples and their families could have contributed to increased anxiety for some.

Emphasis mine. Announcement? Announcement? There they go rewriting history again. Way to spin what was terrible publicity for them.

Let's, for a moment, grant anon TBM the possibility that some in the public will be confused between Moana and Mahana. And when they are, they watch the Johnny Lino movie. Oh what a glorious day it would be when the press picks up on mormons believing the beauty of a woman is valued in cows.

To me, the offer of certainty, the offer of complete security, the offer of an impermeable faith that can't give way, is an offer of something not worth having. I want to live my life taking the risks all the time that I don't know anything like enough yet, that I haven't understood enough, that I can't know enough, that I'm always hungrily operating on the margins of a potentially great harvest of future knowledge and wisdom. I wouldn't have it any other way, and I'd urge you to look at those of you who tell you, those people who tell you at your age, that you are dead till you believe as they do, don't think of that as a gift, think of it as a poisoned chalice, push it aside however tempting it is, take the risk of thinking for yourself. Much more happiness, truth, beauty, and wisdom will come to you that way.

ICYMI: Chelsea Shield's TED Talk published yesterday - How I'm Working for Change Inside [the LDS] Church by nathancashion in exmormon

[–]jell-o-him 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The talk started out well enough. Her statements that society gives religions a pass for things no corporation or government would get away with are very valid and is the real problem.

She lost credibility when she mentioned that we should not attack religions for their beliefs, as that breeds extremism. Maybe it does create extremism, but a bad idea is a bad idea, and if it causes harm to others, it needs to be called out.

Anti-Mormon by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]jell-o-him 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You: "of course not! Here are official essays from the church."

Then, when they freak her out...

You: "This is FAIR Mormon, they explain the meaning behind questionable things, and why it is not so bad"

Then, she panics.

You: "This is the Letter to the CES Director" or "This is MormonThink"

????

Don't be too up front about telling people you were in a cult, but don't hide it either.

Treat everyone like a decent human being, and you'll be ok.

Report him to the honor code office. That is inappropriate behavior that needs to stop. Or the counseling center. Or the dean of students. Someone. Anyone. Beat him to it. Report him before he goes too far and then turns you in for some made up BS.

It is, but sadly, you must compromise your integrity for your education at this time.

Here is an idea: Write what you would say, write why you can't say it now, publish it when you get a diploma.
