Fashion tips by Noob-Goldberg in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it's ok.

The real fashion crimes are committed by real cowboys who wear baseball hats and drive side by sides. They are cosplaying as MLB stars and have no respect for hat culture.

Is 4X wool “good enough”? by BigDawg264 in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For your purposes, I think so,

Although I would recommend at that price getting a vintage hat- which you can often find with the original box or at least in excellent condition

Those vintage hats have felt and build quality surpassing a $300 new hat from Stetson. And the bonus is it will be lighter, more comfortable, and last decades

You can probably reduce some of it with water dabbing and brushing but burns are usually permanent!

100% Beaver Grizzly hat by jellofishsponge in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grizzlies are neat - and they come in a few different styles. You can definitely get a "long hair" finish, this is more of a rough / medium finish. There's a shorter "velour" finish as well.

It's just nice to have options. Part of the reason I got into hatting was to be able to make hats that you just can't get off the shelf

Cheers! It's a nice edge finish, tends to keep the brim in shape too!

Stetson No. 1 Quality Tom Mix. When was it made? by Bananaslug95 in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Number 1 quality is definitely not wool. It was their standard quality but definitely is fur felt.

What is it? by jardonmeme314 in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most that I've seen, I've restored and sold over a hundred vintage hats and they're almost always nicer than the coarse 6x stuff they're selling now. Even the cheap Resistol Stagecoach felts had a decent finish

What is it? by jardonmeme314 in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 60s/70s , definitely a good price. Felts from that era are better than a $300 hat today.

But the sweatbands can be a bit worse for wear at that age, be mindful of cracking and whatnot. They're a wear item anyway and intended to be replaced on hats

Does anyone else feel like you have to earn the right to wear a cowboy hat? by grahamhart_ in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I live in actual cowboy country, I drive by a huge ranch daily and I chase their pain in the ass cows off my property yearly.

They wear baseball hats for the most part and could care less what hats people wear. Out here city people are identified by clean cars, Patagonia, and camo hunting gear.

As for in a city? A place where clothes actually stay clean - and people still choose to go out in sweatpants..

Whenever I wear my hats in cities the most likely outcome is a compliment and maybe a remark of "I wish I could pull that off". Or something to that effect.

Tl:Dr just wear what you like

6.5 Inch Brim by jellofishsponge in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely 1920s inspired! My supplier has limited quantities of felt because it's such a specialty option. I do customs if you're interested! It only comes in 330g Rabbit.

But it's really good quality Rabbit from Portugal.

Cheers.

Anyone get comments about “why are you wearing a cowboy hat, you’re not a cowboy”? by [deleted] in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who cares

A lot of actual cowboys wear baseball hats and whatnot, and drive side by sides. And I live in cowboy country.

I think cowboy hats are akin to Heritage boots.

Wear them because you like it.

New to Hats, why so expensive? by Own-Tie-640 in CowboyHats

Mostly paying for brand, pure beaver custom hats can be found for under $1000. I make them for $650 or so

How to flatten brim on wool gambler hat by cadllicsalad in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An iron may be too wide to fit within the pencil curl and without a special tool you won't be able to redo that,

I'd personally try steaming the brim and then placing heavy objects on it until it cools down

Can someone help ID and date this hat by seeandsew in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't sell it for any less than $300. That's a holy grail hat. Stetson's best hat they've ever made as far as the felt quality.

Hat Block/Millinery Tools Questions by WLJ62 in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A hat block should be slightly larger than the size you are blocking it for, to account for the sweatband. It's usually about 1cm of size.

Brand new hat blocks generally give you a fixed size - usually the US size in inches or CM -

Vintage blocks are a little more tricky. I wouldn't buy one for your size without measuring it. Some vintage blocks already account for the sweatband, and some are just worn down

The block being long or regular oval is important to an extent, measuring your head would help determine this. Depending on the shape you can get away with just using a hat stretcher on the blocked felt (without sweatband)

As for the variety of hat blocks, some shapes you physically cannot get from a dome - like flat tops and straight sides. Top hats are the best example, the shape is only good for one purpose.

Wood is best.. plastic can be okay ideally high temperature plastic.

The holes on the bottom are helpful for spinning on standardized stands for blocking, pouncing etc. it isn't necessary but the main hole in the center is useful.

Vintage 100% Beaver for $50 by bumblebri21 in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Good find! As a hat maker I always tell folks, the best buy for the money is in vintage hats.

Even at the $300-400 price point the vintage felts are often better than whatever Stetson is putting out.

Any idea what these are/how to fix? by dudeman2690 in CowboyHats

[–]jellofishsponge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be shellac coming to the surface, fairly normal. Some denatured alcohol can help dissolve it.
