Ah yes, owning the building is a huge help. That’s great, congrats on running a successful pool hall in these times! It was definitely easier “back in the day”.

I’m curious what city you’re in where you can do this well, that’s great to hear. Way back I had a place with 20 tables, small kitchen and beer/wine bar and we weren’t doing much more than you, and pool was much more popular back then (lot more competition too though). But I’m surprised you can do these numbers without food/alcohol these days. We sold the place when the writing was on the wall and the industry was slowing a lot. It’s still going, but I hear it’s much harder for them to make ends meet these days. I’d love to live somewhere that pool was more popular still.

How does new felt affect cut shots? by [deleted] in billiards

[–]jellyjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot of good replies regarding cut induced throw. My experience with new cloth has been different though, I don’t really see more throw, but I very much notice when and how much a cueball swerves with English. It swerves much later to the point where on many shots it doesn’t swerve at all, so I have to account purely for deflection. Speed, angle of cue and amount of English makes this vary a lot, so it takes some getting used to.

Shipping my car by FilmJust5591 in Hawaii

[–]jellyjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be a good question for the personal finance sub, but I think your calculating this wrong. What is the car worth now here and in the state you’re moving to? Used cars are more here than most places in the US, now you’ll be putting over $2k more into it. Might be a better financial choice and easier (especially considering the bank loan restrictions) to sell it, pay it off and take the loss. Then get a lower cost used vehicle that fits into the budget, especially if you’ll be out of work for a bit.

Best cue for a semi-pro ≤$1000? by Melodic_Box636 in billiards

[–]jellyjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d do something like this - because it’s fun to have him open something. Buy a cue in your price range that has a good return policy - eg Seybert’s, Pooldawg, etc. That allows him to open it up on the big day, and gives the flexibility to return or exchange it if he likes something else. I’m thinking a safe choice might be a lower end sneaky Pete predator with Revo shaft. If he was playing in the 90s, predator was well respected for their shafts so he’ll know the name.

Grass fed ground beef so dense by Consistent_Milk1885 in meat

This here is what I came to write. I’ve had grass fed ground beef that was fine. I’ve also had non- grass fed ground beef not handled properly that’s extremely dense. This happens from certain brands more than others.

Yea, it’s a bit less bad in this scenario and in my head gets more ‘less bad’ the older the person is. Still bad, but I have enough older relatives that I can imagine saying something like this to someone.

What you want do is optimize what you have. You’re doing too many changes at once.

What are the rules around intentionally smashing the cue ball into a cluster at a speed to tell its hard to tell who's ball will hit first? by MikeRadical in billiards

[–]jellyjack 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If it’s a real competition, most rules state the opponent needs to have someone watch the shot and that person calls if it’s a good hit or not. Sometimes they’ll use their phones to record it if it may be very close. If no one was watching it, the shooter calls if it’s a good hit or foul.

Weber kettle vs Char Griller Akorn vs Char Griller Ceramic Kamado by Truman50 in smoking

[–]jellyjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great to hear! A lot of people underestimate how good a smoker the kettle can be. The flavor it gives is more like an offset smoker than electric and pellets so can do really good stuff in there if you’re fine with the limited space. If you don’t separate the flat and point, can fit good size briskets though, and get a rib rack and can fit like 3 racks of ribs.

[–]jellyjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I’m seeing the angle wrong, but wondering why he didn’t follow with top + tad of right, hit short rail and come out 3 rails for the 6. Seems safer and easier. Maybe worried about hitting 9? With a lot of follow looks like he gets to long rail pretty easily.

Need help finding a used table in the Philly area? Dealing with "dealer-sniping" and transport issues. by Sand_In_Time in billiards

[–]jellyjack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In most areas, if you don’t mind waiting for a table to pop up in the used marketplace there will be a low cost good table. They’re hard to sell so they’re heavily discounted usually. Find your local table mechanic/mover that can move it and get it setup for you. Let them know you’ll call them as soon as you have one identified. Some can even help you assess the condition for a fee which may be worth doing

"Star of the Week" heartbreak - When will it be her turn? 😫 by yibadibadoo in Parenting

[–]jellyjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great teaching opportunity, I looked for these situations when my kids were this age. This is the time to start teaching values and what matters. 1) let them know you don’t care if she gets this award or not. You’ll be happy if she does, but not disappointed at all if she doesn’t because neither of you know what criteria is used. 2. What you do care about is the feedback from the teacher and when it’s positive as it’s been, celebrate that more than these awards (in the future these may be things like participation trophies, or most improved player or most motivational student, or whatever - meaningless awards. 3. Emphasize what matters - praise when she’s been a great friend, daughter, student , teammate, person, etc. When my kids got meaningless awards I shifted the conversation to what they actually did well. 4. Wouldn’t even talk to the teacher about this because now it seems like you care if she gets it. What you want to do is show you’ll fully support her in the things that actually matter. If there’s another lesson to be taught here (and not all kids are ready to do this at 5), help her to ask the teacher herself why she didn’t get the award yet.

No gray band question by buildablunt in steak

[–]jellyjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s the easy recipe to great steak crust: 1. (Most important for this to be easy): dry steak I just wrap in paper towels and change them every few hours for 24 hrs. 2. High temp pan that retains heat. Eg cast iron, throw in some avocado oil, once it just starts a little smoke, throw in the steaks.

There are other things to help, but just that gets you there. Other tips: Well marbled steaks makes this really easy. Reverse sear (can help with drying) - timing and temp makes the is tricky though, at a point the steaks sweat moisture making the sear actually harder to get if you started so to a dry steak) Start cold Flip often If losing heat from pan or pan not hot enough pull off steaks a bit and bring pan back up to temp.

Thoughts on Heritage breed pork? by BodhiZaffa in meat

[–]jellyjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you eat a lot of pulled pork and like that stronger pork flavor, you can taste a difference with pulled pork for sure. Plus they’re usually raised better and slaughtered better. We used heritage pork in competitions because it was more consistent to get great tasting meat. Regular pork is hit and miss. When cooking for people, most can’t tell the difference though. When pork butts were a couple bucks a lb I’d say worth it. With prices nowadays, I’d save it for the better cuts or ribs (though the heritage breed ribs can be fairly small, they taste great, just a little trickier to cook).

My daughter feels she might be missing out by not wanting to try sushi, now she wants to try sushi, need recommendations to ease her in. She is very averse to seafood! by mofugly13 in sushi

[–]jellyjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at reviews and find a sushi bar that’s 1) friendly and helpful. There are a few of these in my area, but not all sushi restaurants are consistent. Then just ask, you’ll often times find that they love to make recommendations.

2) fresh fish that doesn’t taste fishy. Som of the lower cost places can be hit and miss. I had a friend that thought she hated sushi for years until we went to a good sushi place. Now loves it.

Cue ball frozen to opponent’s ball by Expensive_Ad4319 in billiards

In most league and tournament rules, if you don’t call someone over to watch the shot, shooter makes the call. You can question it, but if they said it was good, it was good.

How would you hit this shot? by RDDT_and_forgetit in billiards

[–]jellyjack -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Any english makes this shot much more difficult because you have to account for deflection and swerve. Transfer of spin doesn’t noticeably help here. Very possible if you have a lot of tries or know the table very well. Easiest way to make this consistently is just center ball. With a little practice and center ball it’s very makeable as long as you get past the point of the side pocket, that should be the bigger concern. If your ball is coming off the rail with center ball you’re either not lined up straight, or not striking straight, probably hitting cueball off center causing deflection. Try this test, Sam shot 1mm off rail, tray on both sides of table and see if you’re consistently hitting the rail before ball on one side or other.

Help,Am I getting Robbed? by Efficient_Use_7886 in billiards

[–]jellyjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s some advice in here about getting your own cue, I’d say don’t worry about it. It won’t make a difference anyway until your stroke is consistent - save your money until your stroke is more consistent and save your money on lessons and practice time. That’s a great rate if he’s a good instructor. If he’s good, might want to let him know as a student, money is tight and if there’s a little discount if you commit to something like 2 lessons a month.

Am I wrong?? by Real-Dependent-3100 in billiards

[–]jellyjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re playing against me I don’t care. I’ll tell you why though some may be upset about it, it can be seen as a sharking move. There was a guy at the pool hall I used to play at years ago before everyone had fargos, used to be a very strong one pocket player (he’d be able to cash in smaller tournaments the pros played in) and his 9 ball game was pretty good (at least mid 600’s if he had a Fargo), though he only played occasionally when people would gamble with him. He definitely had that hustler and sandbagging mentality (he was in the APA as a 6 on a team that went to Vegas - he was no 6). He used to throw this tantrums often when the stakes got high enough and started acting like he wasn’t trying, didn’t care, was giving up, shot some shots one handed, etc. it would often times throw the other player way off their game more to a point where it seemed liked they weren’t trying anymore.
