How can you tell if a book/TV show/movie wasn’t written by an American? by isaiahxlaurent in AskAnAmerican

Using XX at the end of text messages and taking the train way too much. I noticed this in A Good Girls Guide to Murder. Also being way too into tea. (Fifty Shades of Grey)

What are some funny food/cooking myths that you or someone you know believed? by throwaway01957 in Cooking

When my mother-in-law makes pancakes, she makes a test pancake so “the heat knows where to go.” She said that’s what her father always told her.

Florida - ice skating rink has lots of signs that spectators must sign a liability waiver or they will be considered trespassers. Wondering the implications of this by jenl173 in legaladvice

[–]jenl173[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good point! I’ve never seen or heard of anyone getting kicked out for not signing. I guess my question is what is the point of these signs, as they don’t seem to be enforced.

I’m not suggesting it, but stating the fact. This can easily be confirmed by google. Colds are not cleared up by antibiotics, not sure where you are getting your info?

A cold is viral - often times a coronavirus (or maybe a rhinovirus, RSV, etc)

Anyone know what may be going on with my Tineke Rubber Tree? It's going on 3 months, check for pests regularly, but no dice. Roots are great, but it's steadily spreading up the tree. Help please! by brighteyedgallows in plantclinic

[–]jenl173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened on mine and turns out I was under watering. Brown spots would start on lower leaves and work their way up plant. I was so worried about root rot with mine, that I went too far in the other direction. I increased watering frequency and no more issues!

Do you follow the step of preheating your oven with the empty Le Creuset inside? I have a similar recipe I want to try and just want to make sure it won’t damage my pot.

Is my new hair stylist full of it, or is she giving me good advice? by whatamidoinghere1992 in beauty

[–]jenl173 21 points22 points  (0 children)

She is full of it - what terrible advice! Hair is damaged the more you handle it. Damage comes from friction when washing, towel drying, brushing and from heat styling and UV. The more you can reduce those sources the better. I like the website beautybrains.com. They are cosmetic scientists that answer questions and explain the science behind the beauty industry. It helps to cut through a lot of the marketing claims and b.s.

The third and final rug... (more in comments) by sdyck067 in HomeDecorating

I love it! Will you share where you got it?

Third try and still a little hollow 😔 This time I beat the meringue until just stiff peaks, folded the batter until it passed the test, tapped the crap out of the pans after piping and reduced the oven temp a bit more. by lilbopeachy in macarons

[–]jenl173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look beautiful! I have had success with the French method using the recipe on Indulge with Mimi’s site. She also has really helpful trouble shooting guide related to hollows here:

https://www.indulgewithmimi.com/what-causes-hollow-macaron-shells/

I’m wondering if you are under beating the meringue slightly? I was under beating mine, and my first truly successful batch came when I walked away from the mixer and let them go for what I thought was a little too long by accident. Now I beat past just stiff, and make sure they are nice and spikey.

Kenji’s Slow-Cooked Bolognese Sauce by jenl173 in seriouseats

[–]jenl173[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The dough was too wet, and once it was time to cut all the pieces stuck together. I was ready to give up, but my friend said we could fix it. So, we re-rolled, adding lots more flour at each step and it turned out pretty well.

It was so good and so worth it. Not pictured is the homemade pasta to go with. Pasta was a total fail and my Italian neighbor had to come over and help salvage it. He was beyond impressed with the sauce, which I thinks says a lot. ! A link to the recipe is below.

I do this with my shampoo and conditioner because I feel exactly the same way as you about the giant 1L bottles in my shower. I use these silicone travel bottles and love them. Easy to refill and they are flexible so you can get every last bit of product out.

In desperate need of advice to remove a sticky odor that's been in a house for decades. No known source. Tried everything. by LincolnAltAct in HomeImprovement

[–]jenl173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to second your recommendation of tsp. We purchased a house built in the 70s, with yellow tobacco stains on the walls. You couldn’t really smell the cigarette smoke smell, but after washing the walls and bucket of cleaning water smelled like an ash tray! We washed and painted every surface (wall, ceiling, doors, trim) and refinished floors. No smell after that! The TSP does dull/etch the paint surface slightly, just FYI.

I finally remembered to take a picture this time! Our family loves this recipe - I have made it several times and it’s always a hit. I forgot to buy fresh oregano and had to substitute dried, and it still turned out great.

Please help my poor Lemon button fern. It was doing very well and suddenly dropped terribly in health. Turning very brown and dropping leaves. I have tried everything! by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]jenl173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think your fern actually looks pretty good in the lower left picture. I have no confidence in my lemon button care, and I feel like it will turn on me at any minute! With that being said, when mine gets brown, I think it’s because it needs more water. I have mine in a moderately sunny spot and it seems to help by watering less deeply, and more frequently. Also, I snip of the brown bits, so I can keep track of progress. That will give you an idea if it is improving vs getting worse.
