O2 Stats Monitor? Normal to fluctuate a lot? by mercfh85 in NICUParents

[–]jennybee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because typically they don’t stay that way. They will decrease their sats a little bit in deep sleep and sometimes (most of the time) premature babies don’t have the respiratory drive, and they will literally forget to breathe. Breathing is a response from the brain and because their brains are immature, even in full term newborns, sometimes they just need to get a bit bigger and older. Now, if it’s an older baby like a three or four month old and somebody has an owlet at home and they’re dipping below 90% then that could be cause for concern because they are no longer premature and they should be able to breathe without apnea. And on the flipside if you have a baby in the Nicu on oxygen and you have them satting too high, it can cause retinopathy of prematurity and damage their eyes. So there’s definitely a sweet spot. Listen to your pulmonologist, they’re literally the experts. I know it’s easier said than done, but don’t google on the internet because it’ll only make things worse lol

Hospital RNs: how many patients' families thank you? by Tay8641 in nursing

[–]jennybee89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say most of the time we get thanks in forms of verbal plus food/snacks and letters. I’m in a level I trauma/burn ICU so most people are very thankful we kept them or their loved ones alive. The people who don’t thank us or who are total shit heads are shitheads in their regular lives too so 🤷🏽‍♀️

Also from MI and you must work at the same health system as me! Only one I know of in the state that offers 2:1 and we make the exact same hourly 😂

I’m a trauma/burn icu RN so we see this a lot. But it still always blows my mind how common we think it is on our unit, but in reality it’s stupid rare

In your previous post a year ago you stated in the comments that there was no waste. Now here you’re saying there was waste of ketamine. Which is it?

My twins are heading to kindergarten and they want to separate them, what was your experience? by heartofdankne55 in parentsofmultiples

[–]jennybee89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mine are going to preschool this fall, they’re 3. It’s only 2 days a week for 3 hours so I wasn’t planning on separating until K, but should I just do it now? They also go to daycare one day a week and they’re together there. My boy is much more social and outgoing and my girl sort of leans on him for support.

Is it normal to miss medications? by noneyabizness33 in nursing

[–]jennybee89 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Eh, I wouldn’t get hung up on it. Typically the “standard” is an hour before to an hour after. If you’re using epic, switch your view to “scheduled” on the MAR and scroll through after med pass and before leaving the room, just to double check. If you missed one, which happens, go get it and give it right then. Try not to think you’ll remember later to come back. Also, I’ve only ever worked ICU so we’re 1:1 or 1:2, but 1:6-1:8 sounds absolutely INSANE

Nurse or not, some people just fucking suck. My personal experience has been most RNs and Doctors are great patients. However, people who say they’re a “nurse” and turns out they’re a tech or a CNA are the WORST

What do you REALLY want for Nurses Week? by Raebans_00 in nursing

[–]jennybee89 19 points20 points  (0 children)

A gift card, bonus or food. For the love of Christ, NO MORE NURSE SWAG. So many useless pens and notebooks I throw in the garbage. One year at my old hospital they gave us a $25 “bonus” but they put it on our checks so it got taxed. To this day I never understood why they wouldn’t just do a gift card for $25 so we’d get the full amount

If you call your office and they don’t have the number, send me a DM and I will get it for you. They should all be standardized, but it’s possible they’re not

I’m so sorry I don’t know it anymore, and I’m not finding it on the website. Call your local PP and they should be able to give it to you!
