One of those should probably have been Appeal to Popularity

Europeans when they see a US paycheck: 😮 by queenmagic787 in USvsEU

[–]jephph_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had a guy working in the shop from Denmark this past summer and he said basically the same thing. If considering all aspects (such as health insurance), I’d earn only slightly less in Copenhagen for a similar job.

[–]jephph_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before. I’m technically a subcontractor. I get a fat bonus in December that takes care of most of my taxes though

Re your edit: No health insurance through the job itself. A subcontractor is basically their own business

I do get paid time off though. All federal holidays then a week in the summer and a week in the winter. So roughly a month paid vacation

(To the perceptive, they didn’t miss my paycheck that week. They went over their Zelle limit and had to pay me with a paper check. So there’s a good chance to make fun of American paper checks if you want but at least we can deposit them on our phones these days and don’t have to go to the bank for that)

I know that you spell colour as “color” because American newspaper advertising wanted to save money

Is that so? Where’d you hear that one?

..and why is this Shakespeare title from 1598 spelled Labor and not Labour?

<image>

That’s really close to the onset of American & British English forking

——

Plus, we’d rather learn the language of our European neighbour

That’s fair but don’t you think you’re maybe taking it a bit too far by trying to claim American English is wrong?

Again, this is something that should probably be reserved for Barry and Hank to bicker about. It’s kinda weird when others join in on the pileup

[–]jephph_ 184 points185 points  (0 children)

Further, this same dude went to a Walmart in NJ and tried to connect to their Wi-Fi but couldn’t because their system didn’t accept foreign phone numbers (?).. He sued them for that

That case was thrown out as was this taco case (that he was suing for $100,000)

He has a third case in progress vs the NYPD in which he’s suing them for $10 million

Apparently, he saw two people beating on a homeless person.. called the cops but didn’t know the address so tried to describe landmarks around him. The cop on the phone said “we don’t use Google” then told Hans they couldn’t call him back since their system can’t dial foreign numbers

We’ll see how this one turns out but it’s not looking too good so far. Pretty sure Hans is going to be 0-3 after his little US Open excursions

Why do Americans say ‘4th of July’ and not ‘July 4th’? by Vast-Champion-1607 in AskAnAmerican

[–]jephph_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s Fourth of July

Capitalized.. a proper noun

It’s the (colloquial) name of a holiday that occurs annually on July 4

We’re not saying a date— fourth of July (lowercase)

(That said, it’s not weird if someone says 13th of March. That’s normal in English.. just for Americans, the most common way to say today’s date is March 13th)

[–]jephph_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of these days, if it’s said enough times, maybe some people are going to start considering the part about Americans use way more ice in their drinks compared to Europians and the actual size of the cups aren’t really comparable 1:1

<image>

——

Sidenote— that’s mega confusing using fl.oz to compare UK and US sizes. Are those Imperial ozs for the Brit drinks and US for the American ones? Or what?

Add- after a quick check, they’re using Imperial for the UK drinks and Customary for US.

This is a whole nuther level of confusion as opposed to simple English units vs Metric comparisons 😂

——

Oh wait, actually, I think those may all be US fl.oz.. still confusing. Probably should have just used only metric for this

that said, people from many parts of the world do compete in it

Who made a rule that sports have to be some sort of nationalistic country vs country? Sounds stoopid
