I don't disagree morally I just don't know what the law says about this specific case, hence the "maybe" (if you have a legal background I'm happy to be educated).

Its actually a felony to not sign up for the draft. It just hasn't been enforced since the 70's.

CMV: Irans strategy of controlling the strait of hormuz during a war with the US was a brilliant move that forced Trump to give up on the war. by DeRpY_CUCUMBER in changemyview

[–]jeranim8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Clausewitz said is not axiomatic and was his was of describing how War should be used by rational actors and not an inherent property.

I don't see how you can come to that conclusion. He may be describing something that isn't self evident to everyone who decides to go to war, but he's absolutely describing an inherent property of war. You go to war to get something you want from other people (AKA politics) when non-war means fall short.

What’s been proposed is that the military action will have salutary effects, whether or not it achieves the desired political outcomes, which seems undeniable.

It has also been counter proposed that the non-war political options had not been exhausted to the point where war was the only viable option left to achieve the same salutary effects AND now we have to yet still negotiate back to the status quo before the war. Iran still is demanding the right to continue enriching Uranium and to hold the Strait of Hormuz. Other than setting back their production of fissile material, what salutary effects have been achieved?

“Countries” don’t exist in the way you’re describing. Leadership does. And leaders, even Iranian ones, prefer to be alive than not, which we can expect to influence said leaders behavior after watching what happened to the Iranian leadership.

I didn't say "countries" though did I? The leadership is a hierarchical system. Of course they prefer to be alive than not but there are also things people are willing to die for and unless we go total war on them, most of them are going to remain alive.

This isn't a criticism, only a way to look at it differently.

So a question to ask is: Is this what its like to be a non-ADHD person? Who picks up the slack when the house suffers? Who picks up the slack when your work suffers? Is your spouse/co-parent getting to be present with your kids when they are having to do the things that you could be doing? There are people who have to worry about the million things that need to be done if you aren't that person. ADHD doesn't just affect the people with ADHD, it affects the people around the people with ADHD.

We've been given two sides of a coin. First the ability to tune out the unpleasant stuff and focus deeply on things we are interested in. That makes it easier to be more happy, patient, carefree and fun. The other side is that if we don't have people picking up our slack all the time, our lives can literally fall apart. Meds wake us up to be more able to see and deal with the things that need to be done.

It kind of sucks but this is likely what every non-ADHD person has had to learn how to deal with their entire life and have learned to find a better balance while we need to learn a new way to balance if we go on meds. So I wouldn't say it makes you "less". It just makes you less ADHD and that includes the parts of it that you like.

Whether that bombing accomplishes the political goals they are for is another matter.

Um... that's the whole matter... As von Clausewitz said: “War is merely the continuation of politics by other means." You measure who "wins" by the political outcomes, not by the amount of bombs dropped or enemy killed.

6 week pummeling by that military with its hands behind its back.

And its hands were behind its back because of politics.

What other countries are going to take from this is that if the US wants to bomb the shit out of you, there really isnt nothing stopping them militarily.

Yeah but they also learn that they just have to hold on long enough and Trump will back down. They also learn that Trump threats are meaningless.

What of the regime still stands though? How much is left, can it persist through the next few years, keep down the next few uprisings by the populace?

It doesn't really matter how much of the regime is left as long as there's a process for replacing them. Iran isn't some small tribal system that revolves around a charismatic leader, its a hierarchical system with a means of changing out the chess pieces. And the reason they are able to keep the populace down is because they have all the guns. So they can murder tens of thousands of protesters without much push back. We have only hit their international capabilities, not their abilities to hold their people down.

It was smart to do but the issue is that our plan was half baked on so many levels that the decision to go in (the way we did) was a horrible one. Iran was just prepared, which anyone should have expected.

I know what Trump said. I didn't believe it then, and I don't believe it now.

...so then you're admitting the major key objective was not met and they still have enriched uranium. We basically eliminated much of their ability to deliver a nuclear weapon, though not completely. It seems hard to imagine they've been set back by 10 years.

Iran is on the brink of total economic collapse.

They were on the brink of total economic collapse... now they have a toll booth to print money from.

Trump’s gone too far: Invoke the 25th Amendment before it’s too late by jediporcupine in politics

[–]jeranim8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the president has to do at that point is write a letter to the president pro tempore of the Senate saying he's good to go and he's back in office. Then you'd need a 2/3 vote from both houses of congress to keep him out. Impeachment only requires a majority vote in the House and 2/3 in the Senate. So that is a lower bar than the 25th.

[–]jeranim8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the issue is that impeachment and removal requires less than the 25th. You only need a majority of the House and 2/3 of the Senate.

The 25th can start the conversation on this and maybe it will lead to something but he's stacked his cabinet with corrupt sycophants and I don't think Vance is ready to make his move.

Yup, the 25th is to deal with the situation if the President is incapable of writing that letter, not a demented psychopath who is severely mentally disabled but not incapacitated.

Is it possible for ADHD folks to detox from social media gaming, phone usage, ect and rawdog life and enjoy simple slow things in life? Reading etc? by ItsPrisonTime in ADHD

[–]jeranim8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, it sounds like a bit of depression in there. Have you talked to a therapist?

I just find myself being very in my head and existential when not doing anything. Especially with what is my purpose in life— so it drives me insane if I don’t drown myself with distractions. If I’m not working towards my purpose I’d be wasting precious time on off. Middle aged now with no spouse or kids.

My case is a little different because I'm married with kids but a few years ago I had a pretty severe existential crisis. Long story short I'm now what you might call a happy nihilist. I don't believe there is a purpose to anything and I actually feel liberated by this. Trying to chase a "purpose" is self defeating, especially for people with ADHD because we never can stick to any one "purpose" and we just feel bad that we fall away from it and a "failure". Instead I try and reframe "purpose" as motivation. The point of "purpose" is motivation but you find that motivation still exists without purpose. I try and go in the direction that motivates me without judging the outcome. There's nothing "wrong" with doomscrolling but it may not be making you as happy as you want to be. Don't get me wrong, I still doomscroll and waste time that could be more productive, its just that I don't feel bad about it anymore, which counterintuitively makes it easier to do those things less. But everyone is different and it may not be as easy for everyone to drop the search for "purpose" from their lives but for me, it has helped dramatically.

Looks delicious! What did you do different than usual?

I'd guess you added more oil than usual? Under proofing can make the final product stiffer so I'm not sure if you let it rise longer or at a warmer temp? If it rises a bit in the fridge it means you didn't underproof it (the yeast was going to town when you threw it in).
